Thoughts on Postal Service ceasing Saturday delivery
Feb 6, 2013, 11:34 AM

The 2006 Postal Reform bill requires the USPS to pre-fund the full amount of post-retiree medical for the next 75 years by 2015. George Bush and Senate Republicans insisted on that provision in the reform. Postal Service Employees have overpaid into the Civil Service Retirement System by billions of dollars. Republicans insist that giving them that money back would be a "bail out." The Postal Service is the largest middle class employer in the country. This is a coordinated attack from the right wing to destroy hundreds of thousands of union jobs and give that system to people who pay $5 an hour for billions in profits, and they don't care about the services people receive. The Postal Service is also the most efficient delivery system in the world and it is bound by law to keep increases in prices below inflation. It is also mandated to provide universal service at a flat rate to every single person who wants it, even under ridiculous rules mandated by Congress. This is nothing but a ploy by the far right to destroy public services and give taxpayer-funded goodies to their rich buddies and we should not be talking about it in any other way.

The Left-Winger would say......

The Left-Winger would say to keep the jobs of inefficient, out-dated, slow to adjust to the times entities just to keep people working. That is wrong. That would be nothing more than welfare under a different name. Employees are let go because there is not demand for their product everyday in the private sector. And, years ago many created their own businesses. But, those who try to do the same now are handcuffed by regulations & taxes.

It is an outrage

It is an outrage that we are not supporting the postal service as it continues to lose money. First we don't bailout the telegraph industry and then we allowed the typewriter companies to die along with their various middle class jobs. Now we are allowing the postal service to slowly die as well. Before you know it people will be telling me Blockbuster and all of their jobs is going out of business. Truly an outrage!!

I go along with a lot of what you say, but Saturday delivery

should be cut. Even if the USPS was flush, it should be cut. It just is not needed. Faxes and email have cut a lot of what they used to do.
