Thought we played pretty good

Nov 5, 2019, 9:12 PM

Our young guys just have to grow up a little bit. We almost had the game if we would have gotten that turnover. VT was very lucky to get that and 1. I'm excited to see how this team grows this year.

They have 10 new players and a rookie coach... gonna be a long year in the ACC

A coach that almost beat Kentucky with Wofford and now has much more talent. We had a great chance to win our young guys just played like expected down the stretch. They will grow from this.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I doubt he has more talent this year, than he had at Wofford

Nov 5, 2019, 9:23 PM

last year!!

He had some baller of some white boys no doubt but recruiting wise I'm sure this VT team has more stars than Wofford did last year.

I love how people hear something like “they had 10 new players” and immediately go off the rails repeating it, without actually doing research on the players.

And please, a rookie coach? He was tremendous at Wofford. I’m sure several people on this board wanted him here.

Lol I wanted him here

So youre saying that Vtech has a better coach than we do

Re: Thought we played pretty good

I would certainly say yes lol. I just am not going to give up on our team after one game no matter who our coach is.

No...I agree with you. I was just playing around to funnybof course. I am looking forward to this season. I see this seaon being just okay, but I like what Brad is building.

Hopefully we grow up fast and can make a little noise but who knows. I just hope we don't start this losing close games thing again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We were absolutely brutal most of the second half

Nov 5, 2019, 9:14 PM

We didn't make 10 shots.

I think it's going to be the worst year we've seen since Shyatt. VT is awful, they wont win 5 league games

Re: We were absolutely brutal most of the second half

Nov 5, 2019, 9:16 PM

VT has a great coach with some pretty good talent. We played poorly some but I expect us to improve. There were some good things that give me hope.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

VT is awful

Nov 5, 2019, 9:48 PM

I love their coach. Nolley, is his first game, is better than any player we've had since the 1980's. But he is all they have. Young and VT are in for a long year as well. We'll be battling them for 14th place in the league

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: VT is awful

Nov 5, 2019, 10:19 PM

We will see. Not sure how you can say they are awful when then have played one game and won tho.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They're going to be awful for the same reason we

Nov 5, 2019, 10:22 PM

will be. Not enough ACC caliber players ready for prime time. They do have Nolley though, so edge to VT

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: They're going to be awful for the same reason we

Nov 6, 2019, 7:10 AM

Hopefully our freshman grow up fast! I think Mack and Simms are solid players in the league tho just need some others to step up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Solid yes

Nov 6, 2019, 7:47 AM

But unless they, along with Newman, really elevate their games, is solid enough to overcome an all freshman backcourt?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Solid yes

Nov 6, 2019, 8:21 AM

Not if they play like last night lol but I believe our backcourt has the talent. Hopefully these next 5 games or so builds some confidence.

Your decline into such pessimism and negativity

over the past year here has been surprising. I’m sorry you’re so down on our program. Perhaps you should watch more than one game this year before drawing such dramatic conclusions.

Judge, it's been 10 years

Nov 6, 2019, 7:05 AM [ in reply to Your decline into such pessimism and negativity ]

I think this team will be good down the road. But an all freshmen backcourt is a recipe for disaster. You know as well as I guard play rules college basketball. I think Dawes and Hunter will both be good eventually, they showed flashes of that last night, but this is baptism by fire, and the inconsistencies of being freshmen aren't going away. They're both good prospects, but not the type that should be starting in the ACC as freshmen.

But they are who we have. They are pretty clearly all we have. Scott played 7 minutes. He's a 5th year grad transfer. You dont think if we felt he were going to be a factor this year he would have been in that game? Hemenway can shoot. But plenty of great shooters struggle as freshmen, especially when that's the bulk of their game right now. You trying to tell me Clyde Trapp is going to be a savior for this group?

I have no doubt they'll improve, but so will the players on other teams all well ahead of them now as the year goes on. I've been saying since last year this season could be a disaster. I entered the season with very cautious optimism after the summer trip, but have stated throughout the preseason PG, and guard play overall was my biggest concern. That was shown last night, and I dont see it changing.

And where was Tyson. He's supposed to be our best shooter. He played 7 minutes and looked lost. Did they feel he could not guard a guy in his first college game? How well does that bode for the future?

VT is bad. You know that as well as I do. They made simple adjustments at half time and torched us the second half. Where is the optimistic view of that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Judge, it's been 10 years

Nov 6, 2019, 7:38 AM

I agree with your concerns, but I will also agree with Judge that we should not take too much from 1 bad game that was primarily one bad half. I have enough pessimism for everybody concerning our basketball team, but I am cautiously optimistic about this year. More than winning at the World Games, we won close games while we were there. That has been something that has been rare in the past and I think how you handle yourself under pressure is important. Flipping a couple of close games could go a long way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've been following Tiger basketball closely

Nov 6, 2019, 7:52 AM

for 45 years. Impact freshmen are the rarest of rarities for us. Unless Dawes and Hunter grow by leaps and bounds, neither will be impact players this year. They should be role players as freshmen, but we have no choice but to throw them in to the fire.

Our backcourt is not close to ACC caliber, and that's a death nail. I think both will be good/very good ACC players, just not as true freshmen

Good points. I'll add to that.

I will say that Brad's program appears to be recycled. He loses key players from the previous year and the players coming back have not improved enough to carry the program further and then has to depend on first year transfers who need to jell with the team first, or freshman who aren't ready to be big impact freshmen.
It looks like Scott the grad transfer is in Brad's doghouse for being too inconsistent on both ends. Very similar to Jevan White last year. Well Brad that's what you get for bringing in grad transfers who might not be cut out to your system.
Also, one of Brad's biggest flaws is giving players confidence under game clinching time. Thats why he has such a poor record in real close games. All those close games over the summer, I would have been hitting home with my team you should be able to be good in close games. Very disappointed in some experienced players from that last night.

Not sure what the creator of this thread was seeing. Now if that had been Duke in the building, OK. But it wasnt. It was Virginia Tech. And a Virginia Tech team that had their talent completely gutted by graduation and transfers when Buzz left to go to TAMU. So you have a new coach, and a patchwork team trying to piece it together. But I am not surprised about some making excuses for Brownell. He is the luckiest coach in America. As long as football is elite at Clemson, nobody really cares. As long as they arent totally embarrassing, approaching mediocrity is good enough.
And for one final night, Mike Young again proved to be the best basketball coach in the state of South Carolina.

Tigers are a better team than VT

Nov 6, 2019, 8:28 AM

but with only 34% FG / 24% from 3 / 60% from the FT line?

not going to win many games shooting like that

if the Tigers had hit one more 3 and just a few FTs, it's a totally different game.
