Very cogent analysis. Hope the coaches are reading this.

Yea boy. Those coaches need all the help they can get. I’m sure they just wait for Kantor’s advice daily.

Re: TNET: Clemson can be a beneficiary of the transfer portal

Obviously they do. I could have told you we needed to be signing a large class due to the attrition that would inevitably occur. My biggest beef is that Dabo did not take this into account.

Now this is one thing and the issues going on with the NIL has really gone off the rails as we suspected it would. This will inevitably cause the game to severely decrease in ratings. My unfortunate prediction is that I will go back to watching the NFL more and disregard the college game out of the pure disgust and lack of competition.

The Presidents etc need to get some strict rules in place before this happens.

Ryan's article seems to reflect what Clemson has started to do with respect to the portal. I don't view Ryan's article as polishing a turd (as some have suggested), but each to his own.

Clemson competes for top-end HS talent because of our well-deserved reputation as looking out for the overall interests of the players. We are not a 'buy the athletes via clever payout schemes from boosters' type of program. (Read: UGA / Auburn / Tennessee / Ohio State / aTm / etc)

Admittedly, Clemson needs to get more agile with respect to anticipating portal departures from players who to Dabo's dog-house (L.J.Dixon) or clearly are not going to earn playing time due to poor performance when they did get in games (J.Lay / A.Ajou / T.Phommachan). Sometimes we lost pretty good potential players.

But the good news is that Clemson appears to be getting more active in selectively pursuing good players in the portal.

Dec 27, 2021, 10:05 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson can be a beneficiary of the transfer portal ]

This article seems to be an attempt at polishing a turd. I get it. Players need to have the freedom to seek “employment” elsewhere as the writer implies. That analogy falls flat at a place like Clemson or with a coach like Dabo. Underperforming employees get canned. Dabo however, doubles down and is willing to INVEST all 5 years of scholarship to help develop these young men, even if sometimes they never produce. If this is purely a monetary exchange, they should be treated as just the commodities they are trying to be.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo ain't gonna like this.***

There is one huge, and glaring, issue with this thought process. To view your playing time as the most important part of your collegiate career, ignores the FACT that 99 percent of these kids will NEVER make the NFL. These kids are moving down in competition level in order to be seen. If you are highlighting a dismal 6-7 team, who's really going to notice. If these kids are dismissing the whole academic side of this equation, then they really are losing.....

Re: TNET: Clemson can be a beneficiary of the transfer portal

Dec 27, 2021, 8:32 AM

There is also the part that Dabo recognizes potential. The Paw journey, and his dedication to former players, is amazing. The "reality show" mentality is not doing these kids any service

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Clemson can be a beneficiary of the transfer portal

Dec 27, 2021, 8:38 AM

Are these kids not getting educations at other institutions as well? It isn’t like Clemson has the market in graduating students. Sure dabo does a great job and we should be proud of it. But big programs focus on graduation as well.

But football is a business man. With NIL these kids have a shot to make some money and get a degree. Plus with all the other football leagues out there there are options beyond the NFL.

So can you please please please stop this notion of the glory days and view these men as trying their best to better their lives for what best suits them?

And there are those that love the game so much that they transfer for playing time only. All the time knowing they have no chance for the NFL.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You’re right. Some just wanna play every snap.

Dec 27, 2021, 10:01 AM

If you know you’re not going pro, you should absolutely transfer to a team you could start on. It’s called THE LOVE OF THE GAME.

Re: You’re right. Some just wanna play every snap.

Dec 27, 2021, 10:37 AM

Bingo! There was a discussion the other day about Chase Brice returning for his last year of eligibility at App St. I believe this is exactly what has transpired with this young man. He wants to play as long as he can and realizes he probably doesn’t have a realistic shot at much success in the pros so he got an education and is prepared for life after football but he is going to play as long as he can. And that is good for him!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Spot on…

Dec 27, 2021, 8:40 AM

Our program needs to adopt a more open mind towards the portal. It’s a tool and shouldn’t just be flatly ignored when the competition is benefitting from it.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.

Re: Spot on…

Dec 27, 2021, 8:54 AM

I disagree, I think Dabo's approach to the transfer portal is spot on. He is showing these big-time recruits his commitment to their development is more important than winning now! (Look at LSU 2019, 1 and DONE). Dabo has said the time is coming where using the transfer portal is going to be inevitable. Due to attrition unforeseen at any one position, Dabo realizes it has to be looked into. But the idea that hey a 5 star we recruited is available at WR and we have 7/8 already on scholarship, we take him anyway is never going to happen. Nor should it!

At least Bryant left in the real transfer way when you sat a year. He did not have this silly come and go as you please option.

Do you have to sit out a year when you leave your job for another? Did football coaches have to? Athletic directors? Graduate assistants? Donors? University presidents? Biology majors? Premed students?

Just asking for a friend on why specifically male football college athletes have to sacrifice a year of their life when literally no one else has to?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Two things ought to happen, IMHO,

Dec 27, 2021, 8:52 AM

and it would work more like an employment contract.

We should go back to the "sit out a year" stipulation for a player transferring, but likewise, schools should be required to give a one year notice if they don't intend to see a player's scholarship to completion.

Re: Two things ought to happen, IMHO,

Dec 27, 2021, 9:03 AM

Excellent point. We didn’t even touch on the school being able to pull a scholarship at will whereas a student is locked in.

This system is so broken people. These kids literally owe you nothing. Nothing. Their reasons on going to Clemson or any school are much different than yours. And their journey is much different.

Can we not just please accept and embrace wanting these kids to do what’s best for them? Not you and your feelings?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Two things ought to happen, IMHO,

Dec 27, 2021, 9:20 AM

Dabo has never pulled a scholarship bc a player wasn't making the 3 deep roster. But if he would start doing that, he could have recruiting classes with higher numbers the same as the SEC does....

Re: Two things ought to happen, IMHO,

Dec 27, 2021, 9:34 AM

I've always liked that fact, but last year we gave scholarships to 7 walk ons. That doesn't include the 2 Venables and Will Swinney were getting. I'm not debating whether they are deserving. Just pointing out all 3 could have been given to a player without the ability to pay for it. There was a time that not pulling scholarships affected whether we had one to offer but that has not been the case the last couple of years.

Correct. Clemson hasn't but nearly every other program does and doesn't mean Dabo can't do it....there should never be a system where one party is unfairly locked in

Interesting thought Obed® ... but any school that starts telling a player a year in advance that he won't be playing, and that the school intends to pull his scholarship in a year will be DOA when it comes to future recruiting.

No school would ever do this, even if it were allowed under the rules.

Depends on your skill set and job knowledge. Many people have “no compete”clauses in their employment contract. An employment contract is what a scholarship offer and acceptance is. “No compete” clauses I’ve seen are usually 6mos -1yr. With or without compensation depending on the individual set of circumstances. I have no problem expecting a player to sit a year at the discretion of the program. A university invests a considerable amount of money and resources in a players future….. even if they aren’t starting or getting the playing time felt deserved.

Re: TNET: Clemson can be a beneficiary of the transfer portal

Dec 27, 2021, 3:06 PM

Lol ... have you ever been sued for a non-compete? I have. It's paper dressing as no company can enforce it. Here is why:

Yes there are contracts and laws on the books for non-competes. Ok. But when a company CHOOSES to enforce it you ask for a jury trial. Then you frame your story in trying to help and feed you family and this big, bad company is trying to take your livelihood away. You win. Case closed.

Is it a hassle? Yes, but it's merely a threat and there is virtually no case law upholding these clauses outside of extreme circumstances.

So back to your point ... do you know ANYONE that has been been found guilty in a court of law for violating a non compete? Or did you all work around your contract?

Its called a none compete, and many jobs require you to sign a none compete for a year or so, so if you have an important job you cant just carry it over to a competitor.

Very good article that correctly describes the roster attrition that makes recruiting so hard. Fans all across the country believe that because a high school kid is some "experts" opinion of a star, they will be on the fast track to their school and the NFL. Coaches coach players, not stars, and one school's trash can be another school's treasure through the portal. The portal is not evil, it is an opportunity for some players to play and not sit on the bench but just like in life, the grass is not always greener on the other side.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Clemson can be a beneficiary of the transfer portal

Dec 27, 2021, 9:25 AM

To me the article seemed to change course. Originally, it talked about a couple of players that were that outshined their programs and were looking for brighter lights. Both have already chosen a team not named Clemson. We had an Ivy League guy thrown where Clemson would be a bigger step for him than the kids from IMG and then a bunch of kids that have underperformed where they started.

I'm not trying to downplay anybody, but where are the kids that have performed well, are looking to upgrade schools, and are prospects for Clemson? Yes, Clemson got into the position it is in by Dabo and staff developing players better than other schools, but I would like not to depend on finding players that other schools did a poor job with. Many times that poor job is partly due to the player.

I know there are players out there, and I hope that the coaching staff has made inroads with more players than mentioned in the article. Numbers wise there are a lot of holes to fill at this point. The next couple of months are crucial to the future of this football team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well we certainly will find out within the next two or three years.

Dec 27, 2021, 9:31 AM

If other elite programs continue to go into the portal and cherry pick useful and helpful players and we do not and they remain elite and we slip back tonight and 10 wins season consistently. Then we will know

yes, I agree and you didn't mention our RB who starred at Wisconsin, the Walker kid from Wake who became a serious Heisman candidate, the number FOUR receiver at Ohio State who became a start at Bamma, etc. They are there for us too but the number of folks who can help us (beyond scout team depth) is just very small.
