Let me preface with saying

Sep 12, 2025, 1:07 PM [ in reply to Within reason ]
Reply

I am both a believer in the second amendment and also in favor of gun reform. I can understand and hold both views.

With that said, I can think of other subjects that may have an equivalent lack of "utility value" that still cause some amount of damage.

Alcohol, recreational Vehicles such as 4 wheelers/dirt bikes, elective cosmetic surgery, contact sports, etc.

And yes, I know that in most of those cases there is an intrinsic difference that only those taking on those activities put themselves at risk. But that is certainly not true for alcohol.

I'm just always interested when I see someone make such a black and white bold claim, as to whether they apply that logic elsewhere. I am, in general, a harm reductionist, and that often leads to pragmatic (at least to me) choices when trying to square freedoms, personal responsibilities, and the public good at large.

Formal logic is a black and white endeavor though

Sep 12, 2025, 1:22 PM [ in reply to Let me preface with saying ]
Reply

the "right" or "wrong answer" when it comes to logic is clear one way or the other.

I think what you're doing is confusing opinions with logic. The logic is clear that to support the 2nd amendment you have to tolerate the death of children that come with it. That's irrefutable. It's clearly black and white. The more guns we have the more children that will die at the hands of them.

But what's not clear, or the gray you're alluding to is, whether or not we should ban guns. That's more of an opinion. Is there some utility that guns provide that outweighs the number of dead children? Maybe. I disagree but you're not inherently wrong as an opinion to say you're ok with dead children to have your gun. Then there is lots of gray of whether 500 kids is too many or 800 kids would the right number to challenge the balance.

The difference between those two positions is what often gets lost on here. Like Flow0440 is clearly a bigot. The logic is irrefutable with his anti-transgender rhetoric. Now the question is whether he's a bad person because he's a bigot. People like Catahoula tell me I'm wrong because of the logic, but I'm not. There is ample evidence of his bigotry. But I could be wrong about whether or not he's a bad person. That's an opinion. Too many people on here can't distinguish that nuance.

Now for your pragmatism debate. I would argue that any pragmatic person would see that the cost of guns far outweighs any utility. There something like nearly 50,000 deaths a year to gun violence. There were were like 15,000 alcohol related deaths, even though 178 million people drank last year. I think it's obvious that a more pragmatic person can discern between the utility that comes from drinking versus the utility that comes from gun ownership in this country.

So while alcohol use does come with deaths, it's much more arguably right than gun ownership.

I believe this position *may* hold if you define supporting the second amendment as being in favor of absolutely no gun control (and certainly there are people who take that position). I don't equate those 2 positions.

But overall yes, from a purely logical standpoint we do "tolerate" bad outcomes that could be stopped by removing items or freedoms. I'd argue where you went astray is when you describe that as being "on board" with the bad outcomes.

There is a large body of evidence that mass shooters are often radicalized online. Clearly, if you support the First Amendment, you support mass shootings.

Then we have a Fourth Amendment problem. Due process is a huge speed bump to stopping mass shooters. We definitely need mass surveillance to track internet search histories and digital communications in real time, and mine this information for keywords that indicate planned mass shootings.

And don't forget about the Third Amendment. If we had live-in home resource officers assigned to every household, there's no way these people could plan attacks without being immediately caught.

The argument is a disgruntled kid who has 10 guns in his house is more likely to be able to access a gun to commit a school shooting than the kid with zero guns in his house.

The kid without a gun has to find a way to get a gun.

Or even changing it up, a kid lives in a neighborhood with 20 homes. Each home has a gun. That's 20 houses he can potentially break into to steal that gun. That's 20 potential points of failure that failed to adequately lock up their weapon.

Compared to the kid living in a neighborhood with 10 guns in homes. Each home has a gun. That's 10 houses he can potentially break into to steal that gun. That's only 10 points of failure.

Statistically, one is more likely to obtain a gun than the other.

Obviously in your scenario, a kid can just walk into a gun store and buy one makes it absurdly easily to commit a school shooting.

You're arguing against things we simply know as true.

Here are lists of school shootings in America before 2000 and then after 2000.

Starting in 1840s and going until 1900, there were a total of 32 incidents.

From 1901 to 2000, there were 439 incidents.

Since 2000, there have been 574.

You tell me why there is such a massive increase post-2000, and don't say it's about the number of guns. There were millions of guns in those other eras and plenty of disgruntled people to use them. You're going to have to come up with a different argument than just sheer volume.

Because it is "obvious" that "more guns" leads to more shootings (argument A) because fewer guns would mean school shootings wouldn't happen (argument B). So it doesn't really matter what the actual data is because if B is true, then A has to be true, and you're not stupid enough to deny B, are you?

what kind of standard is that?

As for your question, even though it isn't in good faith, it should be obvious.

There were 190 million plus guns in the 1990s and only 10 million in 1890.

Kids in school in 1890 - 12 million and in 1990 - 42 million.

So guns went up 19x while the school population went up 3.5x...

in the 1980/1990s there was an explosion of 100 million new guns during that 20 year stretch.

Then you add in the rise in semi-automatic weapons especially handguns like the Glock and the AR-15 during that stretch is what's led to our school shooting problem.

It got much easier to access a weapon in that stretch.
