Keys to the game

You wanted it, now you got it. The keys are the same ones I’ve been saying forever. We flat out have to tackle better. Too many times last year a simple 3-yard play turned into a first down because nobody wrapped up. If that happens again LSU’s QB will sit in 2nd-and-4 all night. The new portal DE has to matter because we’ve been thin off the edge for years, and if he can actually set the edge it gives the whole defense a shot. LSU’s O-line is new and untested, so make them uncomfortable early. On offense, Cade has to punish LSU if they drop Perkins into coverage. He’s a freak downhill, but that’s the matchup to hit. Bottom line: win up front, tackle like a real defense, and let Cade and Randall have some daylight. If we don’t fix those things, all the pumping and talk about beating LSU by three scores means nothing.

Agree with all of it. No pansy arm tackles. No more softness on defense. I think this all was due to Goodwin. I’m sure he’s a good man, but he literally sounded like he was going to crap his pants in every interview, he didn’t exactly exude confidence or toughness. I believe Allen does.
Regarding Cade and O. Something’s gotta give this year with Riley. He’s very predictable with bubble screens. We need to stop stalling out on drives. If we stall out on 2-3 drives, we’re going to have a hard time winning the game. We need to be aggressive, and we need to do it fast.

Their DB's and Corners have been Extra Agressive in Camp. As one Beat Writer wrote the other day: If I was a Ref today, the Back-end would have gotten 4 or 5 PI's

Oh, we knew how to tackle. Just couldn't pinch the edges and turn the play inside into the strength of our D. We overran our space and was forced to try and recover, thus creating the appearance of arm tackling. We frequently took bad angles. In the uga game we played a soft zone whereas cbv usually played press man. Total chit show.
That's why I'm not too worried about our D this year. If a player consistently can't defend their patch of grass, Allen will jerk em and give someone else a shot.

I still have visions of Texas RBs cutting it back and going to the house. One play we couldn’t stop and ended our season. I’m with you, i think Allen fixes it.

Even if Allen fixes it....he might need more than one game to right the ship.

I feel 100x better about Allan than I did about Goodwin even from the start.
A lot of us took a heavy shellacking from that merry band of posters for not being sold on the Streeter and Goodwin hires. Funny how quiet it is now. I doubt we’ll be hearing any apologies.

Yeah Cade on the edge was not cutting it. Anyone could see that. This morning I was thinking that I really hope the issue with was Wes, who I thought was a horrible hire from the beginning.
Anyway, thanks for replying with a non-emotional, honest football take. We need more of these.

You trashed the board because of a lack of “X and O” post. Then you proceeded to come on here and give us the worse X and O take possible. Lol tackle better and win up front! That is the best thing I’ve read there Nostradamus! I only hope other teams don’t want to tackle better and win up front. I thought you would give us a break down of Braelin Moore vs Peter Woods. Or utilizing Tristen Keys tall frame against a 6 ft Stamps or Delane. You come on here and tells us tackle better and win up front lol.

Fully agree with DE assessment. Imperative that he is as good as advertised. Imperative that we have no injuries. I am hopeful that Mayo has the talent and drive to be an impactful player.

I respect that you posted this. This is the truth. I think we have the personnel. Your hope is that offensive line is just a little better. Gives Cade just a second or two longer. You hope that our running back situation is just a little better. Mafa was great but not when injured and not really much outside options. The defense has to be just a bit better today. Setting the edge. Have some penetration, get to the qb a few times. And absolutely better tackling. I’m not very hopeful about our STs being better. I also hope our in game adjustments will be better with better coaching. My point in all this is no one thing has to be a ton better. But lots of little things with technique and discipline have to be better.

I’m really hoping our defensive issues were more about Wes than about talent. No way Cade should’ve been getting meaningful snaps at DE last year, and Woods shouldn’t have had to line up there either.
I hate calling out players, because I know they work hard and give everything they’ve got. But sometimes, at the D1 level, effort alone isn’t enough. That’s just reality in college football.

It was a lot on Wes but there is a talent issue still lingering especially at LB. We have 1 true LB with elite speed and that is concerning against LSU and their speed . Woodaz in space against their running backs is a matchup nightmare for us . We have zero depth at LB and portal LB is an unknown . He hasn’t even really played while at Bama so not sure how much he will help .

That’s just a fact. A week ago I mentioned Wade’s apparent lack of sideline-to-sideline speed. I just don’t see him being able to bring down #29 in space.
That’s why we need the DL to step up and for Allen to scheme around it, like @Clemsongalalways pointed out.

The fact they put our defensive guys pictures on the tackling dummies is just going to motivate our guys to be on 100%.
Peter Woods is like Michael Jordan when being called out, I pity the LSU offense!

LSU's Oline knows they hold (no pun, lol) the key to the game for them.

To be told that tackling on defense and scoring on offense are the keys to the game?
I didn't realize that's what I wanted. But now that I've got it, I feel much, much better about our chances.
