memories of a storm named Hugo. September 21, 1989, a date which will live in infamy for any who were around these parts back then. Hope I am wrong, and this thing stays out to sea and dies.

I was a freshman at Clemson when Hugo hit. Tough few months for our state. Praying this one finds a very different path.

90-100 mph winds in Rock Hill! By all indications, up to now, this one (Lee) is suppose to take a right hand turn toward Bermuda!

This one won't come close to SC. It's going way north.

Whether it hits or not it will be the most apocalyptic hurricane since Idalia (If you listen to any news media)

But like our wide receivers this one is going to make a wrong turn.

I took 31 days of cold showers. It took me 4 days to clear a path so my wife could return home for a visit. We ate good for about 4 days when we cleaned out our freezer. People were price gouging, $5 for a 10 bag of ice. Luckily I friends with a guy that owned a fishing boat and he gave me ice off the boat. Bad days indeed.

between I-26 and Holly Hill was a snapped off pile of Pick-Up-Stix. One of my brothers-in-law had a contract with the state that ran for over eight years after Hugo hauling downed trees out of the woods to try and reduce the forest fire risks.

When they said that Hugo was headed to the Upstate (SC)..
I remembered being scared out of my mind!!!

That was before I learned the Hurricanes/tropical storms lose a lot of their punch once they make landfall......

Hugo still had plenty of punch at least 60 miles inland.

We lost an entire pecan orchard of ~twelve BIG trees that was 61 years old to Hugo. My dad said he had planted those trees with HIS dad when he was ten, and he was 71 when Hugo hit. It blew every one of them out of the ground by the roots like it was nothing. The seemingly endless rains that came for a couple days BEFORE the winds hit softened the ground and made it easy for the wind to do its damage.

in Orangeburg. I was lucky to make it home before some big trees went down in the roads. The next morning, several streets in town were impassable, and power was out for awhile due to downed trees.

Way more than 60 miles inland with Hugo. There was significant damage as far north as Statesville, NC! That's over 200 miles inland!

Hugo was a Cat 5 when it smashed Puerto Rico

It lost some of its strength over Puerto Rico, but rapidly Re-intensified in its last 24 hours back to a Cat 5.
The most fascinating thing I learned? The highest water floods in with the lowest pressure- the eye. But that high water was laser-flat. The water ring in my garage was 36” high-precisely. My in-laws lived on the harbor and they had 8’ of water- precisely. They had an upright piano in one corner of their living room overlooking the water. My MIL loved playing hymns on it and had a large music book she played from, open. That piano floated about 40’ down a long hallway to the front of the house; yet the music book and the candelabra on top of the piano never moved. There were no waves in the highest water. Completely flat.

Hugo was a cat 4 at landfall.

Yes, surge is flat. Fill a bathtub...the surface is flat.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This thing is fluctuating between a Cat 4 and Cat 5 right

now, sustained 150 mph winds, down from 157, which is the Cat 5 minimum. Hugo hit with 131 mph at landfall. I don't car how "hurricane proof" your roof is supposed to be, sustained 150 mph winds would most likely take it away. Only saving grace is that winds usually diminish slightly as a hurricane nears land.

Pray for the people in the islands now in the direct path of this monster.

Incredible storm and damage. I left town beforehand but was stupid and came back the day after, No power, no water, no food, no gas. I lived off the Red Cross for two days before I had some friends in Moncks corner come get me and I lived with the country folks for a week or 10 days (can’t remember exactly). Cooked all the food they had in freezers, and that’s what we lived off. Took fully 2 years to get back to normal.
