I do like when your tiger ears stick out of the helmet tho. That’s funny, for one, but I’ll stop there. Not trying to match a #### poor personality with a contrived bad one.

OL’s Dream: Harry Olszewski grabs a ball out of the air and scores a touchdown

Overview:

According to Wikipedia:

“The 1966 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson University in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 1966 NCAA University Division football season. In its 27th season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled a 6–4 record (6–1 against conference opponents), won the ACC championship, and was outscored by a total of 177 to 174.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_Clemson_Tigers_football_team

ClemsonTigers.com adds:

“Howard was upbeat as he prepared for the season opener against Virginia. He realized that several of the returning players on those two teams were world class, like junior offensive linemen Wayne Mass and Harry Olszewski, both of whom would go on to win the ACC Jacobs Blocking Trophy and become first-team All-Americans. Maybe, he thought, they might just be good enough to protect an amazing quarterback prospect, Addison, from Fairfax, Ala.

Addison impressed on the freshman team in 1964, but he received limited opportunity to play behind team MVP Thomas Ray in 1965. He could thread a needle with his passes, which might be why Howard nicknamed him “The Needle.” A more obvious reason for the moniker was his size
six feet and anywhere from 145 to 155 pounds.

Also returning were Ray’s three leading receivers, Phil Rogers, Wayne Bell and Edgar McGee, and pass defenders Kit Jackson and Wayne Bell, each with four interceptions in 1965. And up from the 1965 freshman team were the likes of halfback Buddy Gore, linebackers Jimmy Catoe and Billy Ware and defensive end Connie Wade.”

https://clemsontigers.com/1966-team-50-year-anniversary/

Worthy of Note:

According to ClemsonWiki:

“September 24: Clemson defeats Virginia at home, 40-35, to open football season. Clemson comes back from two touchdowns behind in the fourth quarter to win. Clemson quarterback Jimmy Addison passes for 315 yards, and is named The Associated Press National Back of the Week. Virginia's QB Bob Davis passes for 312 yards. Clemson has 474 total yards offense and Virginia 429.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1966

ClemsonTigers.com adds the following:

“Sept. 24, 1966 – First game in which Howard’s Rock was present at Death Valley. Clemson downed Virginia, 40-35 in one of the most exciting games in the history of the facility and adding to the legend of Howard’s Rock. Clemson trailed 35-17 with just over a quarter remaining in the game, but rode the passing of Jimmy Addison to keep its perfect record alive against Virginia. Addison was 12-19 for 283 yards and three touchdowns, including a 74-yarder to Jackie Jackson with 3:49 remaining that proved to be the game-winner.

Oct. 22, 1966 – Clemson traveled to Los Angeles to play Southern Cal for the first time. This was the longest trip for a Clemson football team at the time. The Trojans won the Pac-8 that year, won the Rose Bowl and defeated Clemson 30-0. Clemson visited Universal Studios prior to the game and had their photos taken with many of the television stars of the era.

Nov. 12, 1966 – Frank Howard won his 150th game and clinched at least a tie for the ACC championship with a 14-10 victory over Maryland. Clemson won the ACC outright the next week with a 6-1 record. Clemson was 0-3 outside the league in 1966 and all three of the games were against top 10 teams (Georgia Tech, Alabama, Southern California).

Nov. 26, 1966 – Clemson downed South Carolina 35-10 to win the ACC title. A key touchdown in the game was scored by Tiger offensive lineman Harry Olszewski, who picked up a mid-air fumble and ran 12 yards for a touchdown.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/

Also according to ClemsonWiki:

“October: The first-ever telephone pole Homecoming display float is erected on Bowman Field by Kappa Sigma Nu. Tiger Brotherhood sells orange straw hats with purple bands to raise funds for the Tiger statue now in front of Littlejohn Coliseum.”

October 21: The Clemson football team makes a morning tour of the Twentieth-Century Fox movie lot where they are met with such comments about their upcoming match with Number 5-ranked Southern Cal as "You're not really going to play them, are you?" and "maybe you'd better forfeit." The players visit the set of "Lost in Space" where they meet actress June Lockhart, David Hedison, and that "mean old Doctor Smith", Jonathon Harris. Harris, in full make-up ready for the camera, comments "My, they're all so big. What do you play?" Soccer, he was told. The production of the episode "The Golden Man" is shooting and the team meets actor Dennis Patrick who is completely gilded as the character Keema. (This episode - Season Two, Episode 15 - will air on December 28, 1966.) Actor Bruce Lee, chauffeur for "The Green Hornet", performs a karate kick before Clemson quarterback Jimmy Addison's face as the Tiger held a football in a passing position. On the set for the "Time Tunnel", several players meet former Miss America Lee Meriweather. And on the large outdoor set for "Peyton Place" the team meets actor Ryan O'Neal, and Frank Howard poses with his head in the stockade, cameras clicking... Following the studio tour, the team is driven on a Homes of the Stars tour. In the afternoon, the team has one more workout before the Saturday game.

October 22: The Tigers road trip to the University of Southern California, ranked fifth in the polls. Clemson is blanked, 0-30, in front of 44,614 in Los Angeles Coliseum. Although USC scores in every quarter on their way to 6-0, the Tigers deny them all five PAT attempts. According to TAPS, ABC Wide World of Sports carries coverage of the game, although Clemson media guides do not mention it.”

https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1966

And Wikipedia adds the following:

“Mike Facciolo was the team captain. The team's statistical leaders included Jimmy Addison with 1,491 passing yards, Buddy Gore with 750 rushing yards, Phil Rogers with 574 receiving yards, and Jacky Jackson with 48 points scored.

Five Clemson players were selected by the Associated Press as first-team players on the 1966 All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team: back Jimmy Addison; offensive tackle Wayne Mass; offensive guard Harry Olszewski; defensive end Butch Sursavage; and defensive back Wayne Page.”

1966 Clemson Football:

(From: https://clemsontigers.com/1966-team-50-year-anniversary/)

As for OL Harry Olszewski’s Touchdown:

ClemsonTigers.com provides the following insights:

“It’s every offensive lineman’s dream. The dream is of one moment carrying the ball and scoring a touchdown. This happened one autumn afternoon 48 years ago in Death Valley in a game against arch rival South Carolina. A Clemson win in this game would mean the second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship for the Tigers. The Tigers had a 21-10 lead in the fourth quarter and were driving deep in South Carolina territory. On a first down play on the Gamecock 12-yard line, Tiger quarterback Jimmy Addison was set to take the snap from center and flip it back to tailback Buddy Gore. Instead, the ball went straight up in the air, right through Addison’s hands. Without breaking a stride, guard Harry Olszewski who was pulling on the play from the right, grabbed the ball in mid air and rushed 12 yards for a touchdown. With the extra point, the Tigers took a commanding 28-10 lead. Clemson would score another touchdown and would win the game 35-10.

Olszewski had a noted football career. He was a first-team All-American in 1967 according to the Football Writers Association, the American Football Coaches Association, United Press International and the Walter Camp Foundation. He also was named second-team All-American by the Association Press and Sporting News. The native of Baltimore, MD was a third-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 1968 draft. Olszewski started all 30 games of his Clemson career at offensive guard and the Tigers won the ACC Championship all three seasons (1965-66-67). He received many honors during his collegiate career. He was the recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for the state of South Carolina and for the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1967. He was an All-ACC selection in 1966-67 and was a member of the ACC’s Silver Anniversary team. He was also chosen as a starting offensive guard on Clemson’s Centennial Football team. Olszewski was also a member of the State of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame as well as the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame.”

Memories fade but not the one being there when the team boarded the buses for the trip to play The Real USC - we had great expectations of a win. Did all the glitz and glamor affect the team's play ? - they did a lot before hitting the field. Harry O also made the Playboy Magazine All American team along with Mass and had their pics in an issue ( not the best pics in the issue by far). May be wrong but weren't we behind Virginia by something like 28-0 at the half? I always heard that Poppa Frank called Addison "The Needle" because he could fit through the eye of a needle. And my memory was that he was less than 140, pounds in '65.

Stopped taking the muscle relaxers yesterday and ended the Prednisone and woke up this morning with a terrible cramp in my lower leg that made me jump out of bed and took forever to go away. Hope that isn't a side effect of the meds ending!
