For all of you that think kids transferring out isn’t an issue

Dec 11, 2021, 8:12 PM

because most were not starting or going to contribute much anywhere…

They do contribute. To depth. Every single one of them. And right now we are getting extremely thin at multiple positions.

So, yes, they do matter even if they didn’t see the field a significant amount. We all saw this season what injuries and other issues can cause if you don’t have depth.

It hurts some, but the guys transferring were

3rd-4th string. Not having 24 scholarship players available by game 12 is what killed our depth this year. That type of injury situation is not likely to repeat.

simple math.......

Dec 11, 2021, 8:20 PM

-60ish currently on scholarship (i don't know if that counts the last couple of transfers or not)

-Sign a class of 13-15ish this year b/c Dabo doesn't oversign

-Left with 10-12ish available schollies to fill between now and next Fall

Dabo has 3 options:
-offer a late schollie to a fallback or what many like to call "diamonds in the rough"

-hand out walk-ons to the incoming Daniel High class

-Dip into the transfer portal (not doing it is the reason we're in this position to begin with)

Pretty sure we'll see some February signings

Pretty sure we'll see some portal in

Pretty sure we'll see a few walk ons get a scholarship

Sometimes the walk-ons get them because somebody has to. You have to use all 85 scholarships in the Fall in order to use the mid-year replacement rule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Many times they've earned them as well

Dec 11, 2021, 8:47 PM

and I'm not just talking about the Renfrow's or soon to be Will Taylor's or Hunter Helms.

Our long snapper never had a truly bad snap.

Swinney never botched a hold in 66 games.

Will Speirs punted for 66 games.

Will Brown certainly earned his this year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Taylor was on scholarship from the start

Dec 14, 2021, 3:19 PM

We would have used his baseball scholarship, but they have a rule to keep schools from counting football players against other sports. We've got enough margin to add Wiles to the scholarship instead of waiting another year. (Still the rule: walk-on who is on team 2 years can be added without being an initial counter?)

It might be a huge class like in 2019

Dec 11, 2021, 8:38 PM [ in reply to simple math....... ]

29 that year, at least 10 of which are off the team for one reason or another. The small classes and back-counting of Jan enrollees gives a lot of margin with the initial counter limit of 25. The transfers are using the blue-shirt loophole, which needs to stop.

I just read about the one-year waiver to add 7 replacements

Dec 14, 2021, 2:50 PM

of transfer players. We don't need it because the 12 or so early enrollees will count against 2021. We have room under the regular initial counter limits for 18 mid-year replacements because only 7 of the 2021 signees count for that year. We've had over half of each class since 2018 count against the previous class, even the class of 29 in 2019.

This was setting up to be an advantage for teams with better retention and smaller signing classes, then they changed the rules.

Depth does matter, but someone like Ajou was simply not going to play anytime soon. If he barely played this year with all the injuries we had then how likely is it he’ll play next year with so many guys back and 2-3 incoming freshman? I do think the portal sucks, but it’s not like Clemson is unique when it comes to losing guys to the portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

of course they're not unique losing to the portal.......

Dec 11, 2021, 8:50 PM

they sure as h3LL are unique when it comes to BRINGING in from the portal.

-130 FBS teams around the country
-127 FBS teams have utilized the portal
-Air Force, Army, & Clemson HAVE YET to use it........and you can understand the military academies.

this is why we're in the situation we're in numbers wise.

I'm just waiting to hear somebody say....."it's all good, we only need 11 for defense and 11 for offense"

Well, that is true, sir. In technical terms, you only need 22 to fill out a roster.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They will take some from the portal

Dec 14, 2021, 3:12 PM [ in reply to of course they're not unique losing to the portal....... ]

I just don't see a lot of good options past the UVa OL for now. Get a couple from the portal, then sign more 3* high-schoolers like in 2019. Take a look in the middle to bottom of the 2019 list - at least 4 starters we wouldn't have in a typical small class: Davis Allen, Landen Zanders, Ruke Orhorhoro, Mason Trotter.

There will be more guys after spring practice who transfer out and more available in the portal. Have to get to 85 one way or another.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In my day, we played both ways

Dec 14, 2021, 3:12 PM [ in reply to of course they're not unique losing to the portal....... ]

17 or 18 players was a gracious plenty.

With all the players we have these days, we would give the Fordham Seven Blocks of Granite or Alonzo Stagg’s University of Chicago teams all they could handle.
