Kids staring at their phones all day is definitely detrimental to their mental health but if their parents or guardians would rather their kids be depressed zombies instead of forcing them to engage with the real world not sure what anyone else can do about it.

but I think you're also correct that they have no ground or standing in this case. Besides, parents own the children, not public schools, according to DeSantis and the state of Florida, so parents should be suing.

Since when are districts ultimately responsible for students' mental health?

You are close to the public schools and how they function. So I’ll ask you:
(?). Do the public schools typically (or ever) require the kids to ‘check their phones at the door’ and can only pick up their phones after the school day is finished?
(*). If the schools don’t do this, then what is stopping them?
Thanks.

We all know it is true (SM causes mental issues galore) but do they have standing and can they prove it.
Whatevah.
Schools should do what they need to do at least when kids are there. Local parents should drive what happens locally.
If you don't like what public schools are not doing (not restricting phones), think they can't do, or really can't do, then go to private school.

Sure, they can block it on school devices or the Wifi, and police phone usage, but I just don't know that any district has a leg to stand on in court over this.

I have 3rd and 5th graders now. Both have Gizmo watches to call/keep in touch. Didn't want either of them having a phone for a while. But starting next year my daughter will have to get a phone as there are apps she'll need to homework and other check in functions, etc. needed. Total BS that we're forced to getting her a phone.

Because that is when they started doing things with limited or no parental supervision.

I think the school districts are correct, but I don't think they will win lawsuit.
