4 Team cfp

I've definitely changed my mind, Im all for keeping it as is. Look at how much entertainment this is causing for that 4th spot. IMO, they are giving OSU and UM way too much credit. Why all the hype? Both teams have been very inconsistent on offense. Clemson just going by the "eye test" is clearly better than OSU. The OSU vs UM game was a poorly played ball game. If the committee is going to be consistent then if Penn St beats Wisconsin in championship game, Penn St nust go to the playoff. They have the H2H and the conference championship. I would like someone to share there opinion on Oklahoma or Oklahoma states chances. The Colorado vs Washington game in the Pac-12 is helping cause some drama. But I believe if Washington wins the conference CG then they should be invited to the playoff. Bama is a lock and I think thats a unanimous vote from everyone on the planet. So we have 1. Bama 2. Clemson 3. Washington 4. Penn St. Go by the criteria the committee has been consistent on and this is the most logical choice for the 4 team playoff.

I'd prefer a 6 team playoff with byes for #1 and #2.

But I do concede that the argument over selection makes it a bit compelling, though arguments of who should be #5 and 6 would also likely be lively each year.
But I also understand that once you start expanding it usually does not stop at 6.

There really aren't 8 contenders, no matter how you spin it.
There's 2-3 teams (Alabama, Clemson, maybe Ohio State) that certainly look elite and probably deserve to be there.
There's another 2-3 teams (Washington, Wisconsin, Penn State) that look a tier down but at least one of them will be a #4 team because, well, you gotta put somebody in.
You go to 8 and you water it down.
In the old days if you picked just two teams for the BCS Championship Game, the argument was, there might be a third deserving team out there that deserves a legit shot at the title. That actually wasn't the case last year when Clemson and Alabama clearly were the class of college football and Michigan State and Oklahoma got clearly outed as Distinctly Unworthy for all to see but it might be this year in Ohio State's case, though if you're really paying attention Clemson is starting to separate from the Buckeyes down the stretch. But that fourth team is basically playing for the honor of getting run over by Bama. Do you really see Washington or Penn freaking State surviving long against Alabama? Me either. The dropoff in quality really happens after Alabama/Clemson/Ohio State this year.
I like the playoffs just fine the way they are. And eight is certainly too many because there just really aren't eight legit deserving contenders in college football.

I agree with that quozzel, there isnt 8 contenders, at best there is 6. Too much thrown toward OSU in my opinion. UM is out definitely, Washington needs to win CG, Penn St needs to win CG, Clemson needs to win the CG and Bama is a lock even if they lose the CG, the body of work, plus they'd only have one loss and they pass the eye test with flying colors. Change of subject here, at this point if Clemson faced Bama next with Clemson just hitting its stride, I believe Clemson would win based on the fact we have the best QB in the country, both defenses are a toss up but our offense is better they are just showing how much more they are capable of when running on all cylinders, which isnt a surprise to all of us diehard Tiger alum and fans. The Tigers should be #2 right now eye test alone. The media shows some love but The Tigers deserve better

the only opinion I have different than you about OSU is I honestly dont see them hanging with either Bama or Clemson. The arent at that elite level. Clemson has turned it on, you can see it in the players attitude and body language, we have a huge advantage now that Mike Willams is back. I feel bad for all the naysayers...... Not!

It makes absolutely no sense to have 5 power conferences

and 4 teams making a playoff. Something needs to change.
If you like 4 teams, then maybe have 4 super conferences with 16 teams. Or just don't have conferences for football. That way you don't have the "conference champion" argument to put a 2 loss in over a 1 loss. Simply pick the 4 best teams.
The easiest solution is to settle it on the field. I think 4 is fine, but extremely weird with 5 champions. That's why 6 or 8 makes much more sense under our current college football landscape. That way, it's decided on the field. Win your conference and you're in. There are no questions.
Then, we can argue and put either 1 or 3 at large teams in. This would make every game in the regular season count. Clemson could schedule Ohio State, Southern Cal, and Alabama for our out of conference games. We could lose all 3 of those games and still be fine because you can win your conference.

I've been a supporter of an 8 team playoff since it became obvious that they were going to go to a playoff format. As you said, that allows for 5 conference champs, with 3 at-large spots. The drawback to that is that there is such a drop-off after the top 2-3 teams the last two years. With the tendency for the polls to load up on whichever conference is the favorite flavor of the year, we could be stuck with things like the Alabama-LSU three-peat yawners of the BCS era. So in a given year (like this year) we could be faced with three teams from the B1G that have played each other, but are still high in the rankings, and a conference champ could have to face a team they have already beaten. In another year, it might be 3-4 SEC teams, plus a 9-3 champ from one of the other Power Five conferences. So there is no perfect solution, but I still hate the 4 team format when there are 5 power conferences.

4 isn't bad most years. One year we may end up with 5, 1-loss similarly deserving conference champs and someone will get left out, but that is extremely rare.
My only real question at this point is.. if Bama, Clemson, Washington, and Wisconsin win this weekend, who gets left out? OSU (11-1) beat Wisconsin (11-2) head-to-head on the road and has less losses, while Wisconsin has the conference championship. That's going to be quite interesting

Wisconsin would be out easily. Only reason Penn St is debatable is because they also beat Ohio St. Wiscy doesn't have that.

But Wisconsin has a much better SOS than PSU. Wisconsin is around 20th SOS, while PSU is 39, and Washington is 60.

but Ohio St has better SOS (15th) AND 1 fewer loss. Wisconsin could match their SOS after Penn St game, but still has the extra loss and lost h2h. Penn St having h2h is what would bump them over Ohio St for most people. I'd put Ohio St in over either one. Can't see the committee putting Wisconsin in with 2 losses and having lost h2h at home. Curious to see what they'd do if Penn St wins, but hoping Wisconsin wins.

If Penn St and Washington lose then the media is gonna think they all knowing I swear. They have been force feeding us OSU and UM for the past 3 weeks. Colorado still wouldnt get in, so it would most likely be 2 B1G teams( which I still wouldnt agree with), im not a believer in OSU if you couldnt tell, lol. I just dont see what the media see's in them at all. The competition is fierce in the ACC, I really dont think these guys get it, all of us have seen the vast improvement in the league over the last 6 years. We as a league have been holding our own against the SEC, on rivalry week over the past several seasons we have been doing extremely well. What do yall think about this scenario, Wash, Penn St. Both lose CG's woukd that open up the playoff's for the winner of Bedlam? I personally cant see the B1G getting 2 teams in, im not of the opinion that they are the best conference, in supposed big games the so-called best teams in that league do bot perform well, imho. The SEC across the board is way down this year, Bama is head and shoulders just plain better. The ACC can beat anyone in that league except for Bama, USC is now the clear leader of the PAC-12, too bad they had a rough first half of the season. So the selection for the 4 teams must have integrity, the best 4 out of 5 major conferences and thats it.

Under our current system, a 2 loss team should never

get in the playoff over a 1 loss power 5 team. Period.
Conference champions should only break a 2 loss or 1 loss tie. Penn St/Wis are not better teams than Ohio St or Washington.
That's why you need either 4 conferences or at least 5 playoff teams. Conference championship should have meaning.
Bama could lose and you will have 2 teams in the playoff who didn't even win their conference, and rightfully so. Because even if Bama loses, they deserve to be in. Just like Ohio St deserves to be in.

I agree that OSU is better than Penn St but they lost to them, Penn St should get in ahead of OSU if they win CG, title Game must count for something.
Look, of course we want the best 4 teams in the playoff, thats what its all about, having said that we go by certain criteria, the most important is results on the field, we cant let OSU get in above Penn St because of the h2h result and no conference title for OSU, I realize this jeopardizes the concept of the four best teams but results on the field are the most important i.e. handle your business.

BTW im glad this thread is getting posts that are mature, caddie i cant disagree with you about the 5 conference deal and only 4 spots, i understand where your coming from, the BCS had 2 teams, we went to 4, if im not mistaken there really hasnt been five deserving teams imo

i would keep it at 4

reason? it generally makes every game count. when you get into 8 teams - then you drag in teams like USC that have 3 losses - thus - every game does not count. with 4 - if you win all - you will probably get in (major conf). with 1 loss - maybe yes. IMHO anyway.
what i believe and what i think will happen. my list. 1. bama 2. clemson 3. ohio st 4. washington
their list swap ohio st and clemson same difference either way. just decides who is home and who is away. we just need lazer focus on VT.
