The conferences depend on those conference championship games for TV revenue. Tossing them out would hurt each league financially since this proposal just pits the top 8 ranked teams together.

games such as this than there currently is for the 5 CCG's we have now. They would be ratings bonanzas with holiday ad spending to boot that the Power 5 leagues would clean up on.
No divisions = improved regular seasons for all teams, plus it wouldn't matter a lick whether a conference played 8 or 9 league games as each would be producing its own champion regardless of the number of games played, though a common tie-breaker formula would be important.
Today's set-up is far superior to the old BCS days, and it's exclusive, but the benefits of doing away with CCG's and divisions to me is enough of a bonus to seriously study this approach.

He made it an 8 team playoff. That is beyond dumb. Top 4 is plenty. The current format is fine. Why not just do 64 teams like basketball?! Sheesh, who cares if the 4th team is wrong. Current format basically guarantees that the top 2 teams make it in 9even if 1 us the 3rd or 4th seed), and that’s what matters.

Would certainly bring in some more exciting games at the end of they season. Most of the conference divisions are so imbalanced now. The Georgia/Alabama game is the only one of any interest. They could still come up with a formula for deciding conference champions based on the # of conference wins, along with some tie breaker scenarios

I like it as a potential. I know it's unlikely but the major conferences ACC, Big 10, Pac 12 and SEC have 2 true divisions so what happens when a team from each division goes undefeated? I guess they're both in or highest AP or Selection committee ranking???

Per the proposal, a better game would be Clemson at home against UCF rather than Pitt in Charlotte.

I'd argue for a 12-team playoff with the top 4 getting a bye

That way your UCFs of the world can get a shot. Do away with conference championship games, since they don't matter anyhow. Have a single table conference structure. And with the top 4 getting a bye, the "extra game" argument for the one-loss Bamas or the independent NDs is done away with.

16 teams, 10 P5 division winners (ND would be in Coastal) plus 6 at large NonP5 remainder worthy teams. In replacing Conf CG you get a home game for top 8 teams, then Conf CG type 2nd round and final 4 played as they are now. This solves the Conf champ getting left out, includes the NonP5s.
If adding 1 game is a problem, drop 1 game, no FCS games allowed. That is only thing I dont like so maybe allow 1st week scrimmage that doesn't count with an FCS team and possibly some revenue sharing from the playoff games.

The current system seems to work pretty well for Clemson. I wouldn’t be in a rush to change it.

Agree,Watering down the playoffs does hurt Clemson, don’t understand why any Clemson fan would want to expand it. We are elite at this point in our life. Only a few other elites, Bama, maybe Okie, maybe OSU, ND trying to crash party. Why do we want to give 4 additional teams the ability to go on the road and tell recruits we made the CFP? 4 is the perfect number when you are in the club.

away with conf divisions. Best 2 teams by record from each conference play in conf championship games.
That would be your true quarterfinal type scenario.
With that said there are five conferences eligible to make CFP ...so there is that issue that will always be a point of argument. But for the first 5 years of this at least 1 conf has eliminated itself.

All conferences should abandon divisions and play 9 games. Top 4 out of each conference have a two round playoff. The first game would be played during the typical 12th game of the season spot. Every remaining team in each conference would be paired up with a team to determine bowl bid selection.
Each power 5 conference champion makes it in along with three at-large bids.

I don't like the conference teams beating each other. Pair them against other conferences. Or only allow conference champions in current format.

You lose the big non conference games with UGA, A&M, LSU, etc. Is that really what you want? I for one am not in a rush to trade a game with UGA for a game with UVA.
