Two Types of Portal Transfers

There are two types of players in the portal. 1. The first is the player buried in depth charts and he’s looking to get more playing time at a lower level school. That’s not a good candidate for Clemson. 2. The other is a high-performance player like ETN who’s looking to make more money by entering the portal. That’s not a good fit for Clemson either.
What am I missing?

Dabo is more likely to go after a #1 to help with depth. You can come here and earn you some nil. Even on those few are likely to take it if they can get nil as incentive. The word is #2 players generally have a back channel deal worked out prior to entering the portal, but they may enter portal to more openly shop that deal with schools willing to do pay-for-play but not engage in tampering. So, Dabo will never likely go after #2 type players = immediate difference makers. It’s an unfair and corrupt system, but I’m ok with Dabo’s stance = doesn’t care to go corrupt just to win.

And by “the word is” I mean reports from Matt Ruhle, Clausen, Mack Brown and Drake Maye, and so on.

And another quote on the back channel deals just now from Dabo:
“Obviously, you have a few guys that are publicly in the portal. It's unfortunate that that's just the way it is,” Swinney said. “They do, but they're not supposed to talk to them until you get in the (portal).”

Actually 3 types. Third is the player looking to upgrade to higher competition and play for a winner, regardless of NIL. That is what we need.

Exactly. This is the type of player Dabo is looking for but my fear is they are few and far between

Great point. I started to mention that. And I believe that’s the OL we are after from Shorter College over near Rome Ga? Right? I actually went with my son on an official recruiting visit to Shorter years ago. It’s not a big school.

A 4th type ..
Player who doesn't like the current program, climate, coach, teammates, scheme, academics, geography, distance to or from home...
Meaning there a lot of reasons why a kid wants to leave or to go somewhere else.
Portal can be seen as next level of recruiting, but you are recruiting kids who have more experience and perspective.
But it comes down to talent, drive and personality of the player.
I think Dabo is methodical and likes a process. He is figuring out how to have a process of approaching and recruiting the portal. Plus, I bet Dabo is a rules follower, so he stays in the parameters and does not cross any or many lines..
Integrity.

There are players who transfer b/c they've been there for 4 years of their life and they want a change of scenery
there are players who transfer b/c they realize they are at a dumpster fire of a program (ETN is probably just as much one of these as he is a #2 on your list)
there are players who transfer b/c their head coach or position coach leave.
You are pretty negative and narrow minded about it

Exactly. Stupid post. There are also players who are buried on their school's depth chart but they might flourish in the right system. Joe Burrow, Quinn Ewers, and Bo Nix are all examples of that. Top players in the country who all transferred from programs. I don't think I'd call any of those move downs in program prestige either.
Also, you can say #2 aren't Clemson men all you want. But what do people make of Mukuba and our other players. Seems an indictment on our recruiting if we're recruiting so many non-Clemson men.
I think the Portal is stupid and is ruining football. But it is what it is. Players are going to make choices that benefit their careers the most, whether that's through NIL or going to a title contender. I don't resent players for doing that at all. If Dabo does, that's his prerogative. But he better win with his way. If he refuses to adapt to the new game, he doesn't deserve his salary and should be paid what an 8-4 coach is.

#3. Players that went to schools that they thought were Playoff bound or at least conference championship bound but wound up on a team going nowhere fast. Ex. Etiene at Florida. Or they are leaving teams because the head coach is leaving.

Or maybe even a 4th if you want to break this group into two groups.
A guy who is at a school where the offensive (or defensive) philosophy just doesn't fit his talents. Or a guy at a school with a bad team and his talent is good enough to get him to a good team. Joe Burrow Jayden Daniels Michael Penix Bo Nix Dillon Gabriel Trevor Etienne Jermaine Bell Keon Coleman
Also a guy who may have been injured and is a sleeper, buried on the depth chart at his school but another school will take a chance on him. Trey Benson Johnny Wilson
That's why vetting is so important. You gotta find the guy who is being under utilized at his current school but has the ability to be well used at your school. And, you also have to find a guy who wants to work, who wants to be coached hard, who wants to get better and isn't just a prima donna who thinks he is entitled to anything.
Oh yeah, there is a 5th category. The late bloomer who has significantly improved since HS. The OL Dabo is recruiting from Shorter. Kyle Morlock (TE from Shorter) Jared Verse (DE from Albany) Braden Fiske (DT from Western Michigan)
Obviously, I'm more familiar with guys at FSU. I'm sure there are plenty of other guys at other schools. (Who is the RB who went from GT to Bama? That would be the equivalent of Trevor Etienne going from Florida to UGA.)

You are missing the small college player or lower tier team player...

who got overlooked early and is ready for an opportunity to shine by stepping into a spot left vacant by another portal departure from a more major program....that is my take and i think that is who we are after thus far on the OL recruits..
