The Rise and Fall of Clemson Football is tied to LSU

🏈 The Rise and Fall of Clemson Football’s Elite Era: A Story of Highs, Lows, and a Full-Circle Theory 🏈

From a thrilling Sugar Bowl win against LSU in 2012 to a crushing national championship loss to LSU in 2019, Clemson’s journey over the past decade has been nothing short of remarkable. But what if that 2012 victory set in motion both the Tigers’ meteoric rise and eventual decline? Let’s dive into the stats that tell a tale of highs and lows, beginning and ending with LSU.

📈 The Ascent Begins – 2012 Sugar Bowl

The 2012 Sugar Bowl win marked a turning point for Clemson. This wasn’t just any victory; this was a win over an SEC powerhouse, signaling that Clemson had arrived on the national stage. It was as if beating LSU unlocked something within Clemson’s program. From there, the stats tell the story:

• 2012–2019 Winning Percentage: Clemson became a national powerhouse, boasting an 88% win rate, five ACC Championships, and two national titles in 2016 and 2018.
• Playoff Appearances: Clemson made it to the College Football Playoff (CFP) six years in a row, a consistency that only Alabama could rival during this era.
• Defensive Dominance: Between 2016 and 2018, Clemson consistently ranked in the top five in scoring defense and total defense. Brent Venables’ defensive schemes were seen as among the best in the country.

This period was Clemson’s golden age, peaking in 2018 with a dominant undefeated season and a blowout win over Alabama for the national title. The Tigers were riding high, and the stats backed up their elite status.

📉 The Turning Point – 2019 National Championship Loss to LSU

The undefeated run continued until they met LSU again in the 2019 national championship. This game marked a shift, not just on the scoreboard but in the program’s trajectory:

• Decline in Defensive Stats: Clemson’s defense, once a force, started to wane. Since 2019, their defensive ranking has slipped each year, with increased points allowed per game.
• Struggles with Consistency: Post-2019, Clemson’s offensive production has been inconsistent, especially as key players left for the NFL. Gone were the days of reliable quarterback play and explosive wide receivers.
• Recruiting Challenges: While Clemson still recruits well, the competition has intensified. Programs like Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama have widened the gap, drawing in talent that once flocked to Clemson.

🔍 The Stats Don’t Lie

Since the 2019 loss, Clemson’s record has seen a dip in consistency:

• Winning Percentage: From a staggering 88% before 2019 to around 75% in recent seasons.
• Championship Presence: No national titles and only one playoff appearance since 2019. While still competitive, Clemson hasn’t been the juggernaut it once was.

🔄 Full-Circle Theory

It’s almost poetic that Clemson’s rise began with a win over LSU and the fall began with a loss to them. The stats capture the story, but the narrative runs deeper: the LSU wins and losses act as bookends to Clemson’s elite era. As the Tigers rebuild, they’ll have to confront the reality that what once elevated them is no longer enough to stay at the top.

Is this the end of Clemson’s dynasty, or just a reset? Only time (and stats) will tell.

We’ve never won a Sugar Bowl. LSU in 2012 was the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

B.S.

The last LSU game was basically a home game for them and they were a bought and paid for team.

The current Clemson Coaching Deck is stacked against Dabo climbing back to the past Championship Days.
All the coaches ( exception Coach Reid ) that helped Clemson attain National Championship/Elite status
are gone. Dabo has surrounded himself ( exceptions Matt Luke / Garrett Riley ) with inexperienced coaches that are struggling and will continue to struggle in all three phases of the game on the field. Solutions to get back to National Prominence : Hire the "Best Position Coaches" with years of experience in all phases of the game. The Clemson Football Program can be and will be fixed. Time will tell who will rescue this sinking ship called Clemson Football.

Leaders who become successful and consumed with hubris start to hire yes men. We seen Dabo do just that. The result is the program has been steadily marching backwards. I mean my God at this point, we can barely kick a field goal or figure out how to score 11 points.

2012 was the Peach Bowl. Clemson has never won a Sugar Bowl***
