Is there another team in ACC besides FSU, UM & CU

Nov 3, 2013, 9:37 AM

that would appear to be moving in a positive direction? I know UL joins next year and that will be a bonus to the conference's football strength. But after those 4 I look around and wonder if any of these other schools are poised or even care to build a strong football program in the next couple of years.

UVA looks horrible, NCSU just got beat by a weak UNC, VT looks like Beamer ball has seen its better days, WF and Duke will always be just WF and Duke, GT appears to have peaked with that PJ offense a few years ago....SU and Pitt?, BC? = unimpressive.

What are y'alls thoughts on any teams besides the 4 I mentioned that could challenge in the ACC in the next year or 3? I don't see one but maybe there's a coach y'all think has what it takes and one of the other schools.

That being said, even with the losses of TB, SW, etal

Sorry, iPhone posted before I finished.....

Nov 3, 2013, 9:39 AM

Even with the losses of TB, SW and others, I see 10 win seasons minimum for the foreseeable future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the other teams must step up

Nov 3, 2013, 9:47 AM

Or 10 win seasons are smoke and mirrors. The other teams don't have to be world beaters but they at least must be competitive. What's going on at va and vt is pathetic.

VT

Nov 3, 2013, 9:52 AM

Beamer needs togo, done good things for them, but his time is done there, let Foster take over and hire him a Off Cord, of they do it soon they'll be fine, but if they wait it could put them I'm a hole for some yrs... I see the VT story a lot like the FSU story few yrs ago, it was time for Bobby to step down and they made the move at the right time before it got too bad

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The difference is vt has nowhere the margin for error fsu

Nov 3, 2013, 10:39 AM

Had, and what I mean is fsu was going to be back it was a matter of when. Vt could easily become average to above average on almost a permanent basis.

The main element to their long run of success was there schedule. They had very few big wins over the stretch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think BC is building back. VT needs to fix their QB

Nov 3, 2013, 10:03 AM

situation but I don't buy into this "the game has passed him by" attitude with Beamer. His style is solid D and special teams. It's timeless. Not sure what's going on up there but Beamer can fix it and if not, Foster will. They'll be back soon.

UVA is awful but recruiting very well.

Wake and Duke...and I mean this as a compliment...are developing into mediocre teams.

As long as GT is running that offense, they are a threat.

Louisville is obviously very dangerous.

I think NCSU is a mess but they certainly gave us a game this year.

Bottom line, what was a "joke" of a football conference a few years ago is quickly turning into a mine field.

null

VT and UVA are what made me post the comment

Nov 3, 2013, 10:08 AM

There is no reason for those teams to be this bad. That is a big state with a lot of talent and both schools have a lot to offer. Coaches who have been at the same job for 10+ years and are on a downward slide (Beamer) do not typically turn it around to their former glory....see Bowden @ FSU, Mack @ Texas, Fulmer @ Tenn and others. Beamer is VT so they're not firing him and they're not getting better.

I don't know if UVA fires London this year but if not then suckiness will likely continue next year and even if they do a new coach is not likely to be successful there until 2-3 years of building.

snyder at k-state comes to mind. joe pa was starting to do

Nov 3, 2013, 10:14 AM

the same, until the sandusky bs. it can be done, it just ain't easy.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good. I want them all to suck except Clemson. However

Nov 3, 2013, 10:13 AM

I think UNC has the most potential to improve.

VT will be better when they get another rb and shorter qb

Nov 3, 2013, 10:20 AM

To look at the Atlantic,
Wake will be meh,
Ncst will get better but not great b/c Doeren is recruiting NC better,
Syr the same b/c there is not enough talent in the NE,
BC will be back to being the big, tough, slow BC we're used to. If they get another Matt Ryan-esque qb and some speed they will be trouble.
And whatever Louisville has. They are good, and have enough talent that if the next qb doesn't suck could be a solid 9 or 10 win type team.
GT is finding the level they will occupy since PJ and his offense can't recruit at a high enough level. 7-8 wins most years.
FSU is scary.

That's how I see it.

Nov 3, 2013, 10:22 AM

think i have to disagree with this post. not sure what's up with VT but they'll be back. i think pitt will be back at some point. i see pitt like we were in the mid 80's. as for the others - even the sec has teams that aren't committed to football. if we get 3 more teams that are competitive it will be a good football conference and well respected once again.

Duke isn't just Duke. I know you are mostly looking for

Nov 3, 2013, 10:24 AM

teams that could be legit conference contenders, but to say that Duke hasn't improved tremendously is ridiculous. They may actually have a chance to play Miami for the division title over there.

Nov 3, 2013, 10:31 AM

u r right - duke has a legit chance to beat miami. especially if they catch miami looking ahead.

Re: Is there another team in ACC besides FSU, UM & CU

Nov 3, 2013, 10:39 AM

In a few years, it will not matter and Clemson, FSU & UM will benefit by playing in a top heavy conference.

The reason I say this is because of the playoff system the NCAA is moving to.

The system will start at four teams but will move to 8 teams (IMO) within 10 years.

So if you go through the ACC even as it looks now, with only 1 or 2 losses, you have a shot at being one of those 8 teams that will get seeded into the playoff format.

If that is the case, you do not want to run the gauntlet of strong teams throughout the regular season and then be the walking wounded during the post season.

You want to have a few ranked teams to play and the rest be below mediocre competitors (by major conference standards). You make it through that schedule relatively unscathed and pretty healthy then you are in great shape to start really playing in the ACCCG and the Playoff Bowls.

I think the drawback thought would be that there is a worry that the team does not face enough adversity to build chemistry and toughness - but those things are moot if your starters are beat to ##### or out altogether while your backups have also not had a chance to get playing time in garbage time against the lesser teams.

Sgt - Paterno is definitely the exception

Nov 3, 2013, 10:41 AM

But he had 11 win teams and then just 2 years of bad he had gotten back to 11 win seasons. Snyder only had 2 bad seasons before retiring, then a 5 year break and he comes back to win a bunch of games. I don't know that his tenure is a good example given the break, but even with those two coaches as the exception it's obvious that returning to prominence is the exception.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jacoby Brissett will most likely be running the NC St offense

Nov 3, 2013, 10:45 AM

Next year. Keep in mind, he had to sit out this season due to transfer rules. He could tear Dorean's offense up.
