Seen some talk about #1 recruiting class, etc...

Jun 24, 2014, 11:15 AM

Don't get me wrong, it would be great to be able to bring in a class that the "experts" widely considered the best in the nation. However, what's more important than what a bunch of "experts" think is filling needs with capable talent. One of the reasons that a program like Alabama stays relevant each year is that they never seem to be weak at any position on the field. If we continue to recruit good depth at each position year in and year out, then it becomes more of a reload situation each year. We'll eventually have 2nd and 3rd stringers that could start anywhere else. Heck, we already do at a ton of positions. Success breeds success. If we keep turning in 10 win seasons, we won't have anything to worry about recruit wise for a long, long time.

Ha, thanks folks.

My point was simply that there's more to it than where so-called "experts" rank the class. It's like getting all worked up about preseason polls. Pointless. Glad I could entertain though.

The only reason recruiting rankings are so popular is on

average its an "unbiased" guess of talent. On signing day every coach is going to say they got who they wanted. But surely its no secret we wanted Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall etc. What you don't know is what the coaches wish list is. Certainly I trust their evaluation over the recruiting site people. And some coaches are better than others. Texas certainly mis-evaluated a bunch over the past few years. And then you have to take into account relative needs vs absolute needs. For example if your last spot was being held for some 5 star DE and he committed elsewhere you would probably offer to that 5 star WR who was still sitting the fence (unless you desperately needed a DE and some 3 star guy was ready to commit.)

And it's not just wins and loses, it coaching longevity, coaches ability to connect with kids and their moms, facilities, fan base, high profile games, reputation of getting kids to the NFL, NCAA trouble, graduation rate, conference affiliation, and playing time.

Complicated topic, but In Dabo I Trust. E Plurus Dabo.

And that my friend is why you're an expert and I'm giving you a point from 1320 to 1321.

It's funny the way rankings per recruit work. Example- I believe Briscoe could be one of our best recruits right now. He just moved from unranked to either 3 or 4 star. Dude has wheels.

Uhhhhhhhh, they also usually end up with the #1 ranked class in recruiting. They are always TOP 5.

Glad I could entertain.
