The NFL and NCAA should change the rules
Dec 15, 2022, 11:32 AM

Let those who want to play pro football forgo college and go straight to the pros
It lets kids choose their path
And it weeds out kids that really don’t want to play college ball or appreciate the value of an education
I think that would solve a bunch of opt-outs
And it might reduce the impact of the transfer portal and NIL
Thoughts?

This is not a valid execuse when ever major sport, except football, has a developmental league funded by the parent organization. The NCAA should have pushed back on the NFL age requirements as soon as pay for play became a topic of conversation. If the NFL had a model where 18-20 yo players could be paid 10 years ago the NCAA would not be in this situation.

it would significantly impact the quality of the game. All kids don't have the ability to play at the next level.

How many people watch the NBA D-Leauge or Minor league Baseball?
People watch college sports because of the connection to the game. I would argue most would not care if the top 10% of players took the profressional route. They still get the opportunity to watch the team they love compete against rival universities.

I think you'd see a bit of a trickle-down effect...

As legitimate Division 1 P5-type players opt for an NFL developmental league, schools would then have to start looking more closely at mid major or FCS-type players to fill that gap. There will always be kids who want to play but the talent level would likely decrease.

Yeah, I hate to see us make decisions based on the 2% of athletes that can play in the NFL. The other 98 % are the ones we should be trying to look out for.

I don't know if there's even 1 or 2 coming out of high school that are ready for the NFL. I don't think the NFL would take a chance on someone straight out of high school either. The NFL Doesn't have farm teams like Baseball and how many actually was able to make it straight out of high school in the NBA? I know there's a few but Basketball isn't as physical of a sport as Football.

The NCAA kept kicking the can down the road while making good money. I don't like paying "amateurs" who are getting education, meals, and housing far beyond what the average 18 year old can afford but with the money in the sport it was easy to point out the players were benefitting. NIL was an easy way for NCAA to pass the buck to deep pocket boosters while still trying to stuff their pockets. I'd think it would be interesting to see NIL providers put riders in the contracts for bowl appearances, minimum number of years played and even graduation. The NCAA is neutered in enforcing this but if a player is old enough to enter into a NIL contract they're old enough to live up to it. I'm shocked boosters haven't already attached being a figure in their local market aka stay at my school in their offers. The QB who transfers from Oklahoma to Southern Cal can't help me sell cars in Norman any longer.

Limited impact on opt outs zero impact on NIL

There are always 3 stars that become first rounders in college; those guys could still opt out.
The problem with NIL isn't the kids it's the adults. Some rich boosters will always willing to cheat, now they'd just be paying for players who are just a tick less talented. Also it's very possible to care about academics and still want to make a little scratch for your pocket; it's normal human behavior.

Just remember that it is the NFL Player's Union that is very much dead set against lowering the age limit.
And that the age limit is not an NCAA rule at all (nor is one-and-done an NCAA rule in basketball). The age limits are strictly NFL and NBA rules, agreed to in collective bargaining with their players unions.

The NFL, NFLPA and NCAA are against this, so forget it

The 3-year fence will stay up for as long as the NFL and NFLPA decide to keep it in future collective bargaining agreements.
It will have zero effect on the transfer portal because 99% of guys who transfer aren't NFL caliber. If there is any effect on NIL, it would be to encourage even more money to be given out so players would stay in college. Is that what you want?
Last thing: Paying players while in college under NIL might end up being why the 3-year rule never changes.

Put any 18 year old high school grad straight into the pros and he is gonna get his spleen crushed. They all need that 3 - 4 years of physical growth to survive the NFL.
