The mystery has been solved

I don't follow sports like I used to so I have been on the periphery of the whole discussion about the portal.
Then I saw a bit on an ESPN site about the unspoken reality of tampering being a key to landing impact players in the portal.
Then, during the game last night, a snippit of Dabo's interview earlier about how the deals are done before the player ever gets in to the portal, which is illegal.
All the sudden it makes sense to me now and I have to appreciate the fact that it is Dabo's integrity that is driving his stance.
There will always be a cost for doing the right thing. Props to our coach for being willing to pay the price.

It’s one thing to get players not getting the playing time at a school. Entirely another to poach starters. And that’s a fair amount of what’s happening.

It’s kinda like Jaywalking.. You know it’s illegal & so does everyone else but you’re the one always ending up in the back of the coffee line because everyone else who knows it’s illegal just doesn’t care because they know the police aren’t going to stop them & ticket them.
I appreciate Dabo being true to his character but it’s just another obstacle he’s going to have to overcome & I’m confident he will.

There is no such thing as tampering any more.

The "illegal" is the NCAA rule against it. It violates the Interstate Commerce Act and the Sherman Antitrust Act.

The portal is a nonissue IMO. It’s talked about a lot as the media needs things to discuss which gets clicks. The real issue for us is paying upfront NIL to HS recruits. We currently have a very talented team but if the 25 class is any indication it won’t stay that way without the upfront NIL payment

Unfortunately the pre-portal-deals will become MORE frequent and larger

There is ZERO regulation, so it doesn’t matter if it is ILLEGAL or UNETHICAL.
I’m NOT advocating for Clemson’s coaches to be unethical and adopt these “illegal” tactics.
However, when California says that you can STEAL up to $1,000 in merchandise without prosecution, you can see that unethical people will take full advantage of that policy and there will be those that PUSH THE LIMITS even beyond the $1,000 limit.
This means that Wesco, Moore, Woods, Parker, et al, will ALL be presented with multi-million dollar contracts to leave their “developmental” team and play for a “championship” team.

you cannot steal up to a thousand dollars of merchandise in california without prosecution. anythimg up to 950 bucks is shoplifting which is a misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine and/or up to six months in prison.

I think Dabo would be fine with using the portal if he could do it without tampering, but it seems that you must do that if you want the best transfers

Doesn't change the fact that if needed it's a fine option. And there were 2 other scenarios in that interview and one involved money after the fact and nothing wrong with that. We just won't do it.

That's the first time I saw Dabos quotes from that interview. That's exactly what I have been trying to tell the numb nuts on here. If a big time player is in the portal then a deal is already done and he ain't coming to Clemson. I am more proud of our coaching staff for not being a part of this.

I get the argument, and especially for the top 10-15% of elite players in the portal. With that subset, a lot of games are being played and slimy moves being made. However, in the last portal window there were over 3400 players available. Many of these are solid players who aren't being tampered with and many programs are getting better by filling gaps and depth with these type of players.
My point is, with good player evaluation, value can be found when you feel the need without having to alter your integrity to obtain them.
