The future of Clemson Basketball

[1]
Dec 4, 2021, 9:39 AM

With the possibility of a new AD I’ll present this question; do we care about basketball at Clemson? Answer honestly because your bank account should be talking for you, and will have to if we want to be.

According to an article by three man weave from April 2020 we spend approx 8.2 million on our basketball program. That’s below the conference average of 11.7 and median of 10.3. These days “commitment “ to a program is directly shown as dollars spent and right now we’re getting slightly better results than our input.

So again I’ll ask, do we actually care about our basketball team and want them to win, or do we just like to complain and act disappointed that we aren’t top tier?

don’t care that our expenditures are way below most teams in the ACC. They think we should have a coach who wins big despite such significant disadvantages.

It’s ridiculous logic.

They completely ignore the fact that Brownell’s teams achieve well above where they should based on expenditures, fan support, etc.

Any discussion of devoting more money to basketball is met with outrage and disdain here. Because football.

I disagree. I think there is plenty of support from the fan base for basketball. Definitely not UNC or Duke level but enough to have a decent program. Most have just given up because the Clemson Admin doesn’t seem to care. Until that changes you’ll continue to see the fans respond in kind.

late game and season management. Money was not the reason for folding to an under-rostered and depleted Miami team in the ACC first round last season. Money was not the reason for putting 6 players on the court versus WVa. Money is not the reason behind the mojo-suffocating tightness he brings to the sidelines. Those are all based on chops and experience. Not a dime in the world is going to have an impact there.

Eventhough JK won’t come out and say it I believe he believes there should be more support for basketball from the top down and bottom up to include replacing the coach. More money will not make CBB a top tier coach. It will not make him better at instilling confidence in the players, thus making them better shooters consistently and confident performers in the last 10-12 minutes of games. Nor will more money make CBB a more confident and capable coach in late game situations.
Therefore I support JK’s call for more support from the administration to include replacing the coach.
I posted yesterday tongue in cheek that if Drad left maybe his replacement should be a successful basketball coach with admin capacity.

Exactly. The only hope for the basketball program is

[2]

to get rid of BB and then spend some serious dough on his replacement. If the product on the court is good, the fans will come.

Oh, now I see.

If Clemson paid BB more, he would be a better coach. Can't argue with that logic.

Yep. He’s holding out.

Not sure what we’re waiting for.

As soon as he gits more money, he can coach gooder.

Agree, just look at how many of the nation's top football schools also have top BBall programs. Heck, even Alabama BB isn't bad. It is for a more relevant dynamic coach! Sorry Brad, but BB is a high-profile sport that is a reflection of the school.

Would you say fan support is better now or what it was under Purnell? What could we do to get it back to that level as a start?

More money for Basketball is met with distain because 99% of the fan base doesn't think the coach can get us to a championship. They have for a while been to the point, that it isn't worth paying money to see this #### show in person.

I care a lot about Clemson basket ball but like you said it's about my bank account. And since I am retired and a lot of my money is government sponsored , I don't have a lot to spend on basketball games.

Give us a BBall product that is worthwhile and not the SSDD year-after-year, and the money and fans will come. Even doing the probation years in the early 1970's, the teams were exciting and more than competitive. The fan base and money was there and can be again. We need a dynamic coach who can recruit and not depended on the transfers as the source for talent or lack there of.

Littlejohn actually has a reputation as a difficult place to

[2]
Dec 4, 2021, 12:01 PM

play a road game. I was a student at Clemson when we went to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament in 1980. So, as you can imagine, the excitement and enthusiasm of the fan base was a big deal. Littlejohn was rocking. Attendance, TV Money et al. were maximized. It's been that way under several coaches since.

The fan base cares about basketball. Not so sure about the current AD and administration. The fan base has lost confidence and interest in the current coaching staff and the current administration to do anything about it. Thus the malaise of the fan base.

The potential(and revenues and potential revenues?)is there with the success of the football program and the excitement, attention and money it brings in and the facilities improvements we have made to the Basketball Program over the last 10 years.

It's time for a new direction.

It used to have that reputation. After the renovations it seems like your average college arena.

LJ 100% became more quiet after the recent renovations

[1]
Dec 4, 2021, 2:38 PM

I don’t know how or why but that’s the very first thing I noticed after going to several games in the recently updated LJ. We went to nearly all the basketball games when I was a student (Shyatt years) because they were still fun and I hated studying. But it got loud! After these most recent renovations it definitely lost its hostility. Very disappointing.

It's the seating arrangement with high $$ donors taking most

[1]
Dec 7, 2021, 5:32 PM

of the best seats on one sideline, but either not coming to the game or spending most of their time in the "club" (eating, drinking and watching on TV). Combine that with students banished to the baselines or upper level baseline seating, nuch of the mojo is sucked out of the building. Additionally, the student ticket distribution is bad, allows no shows, and discourages last minute attendance. Hence, many unused seats there too. They need to go back to the old first come, first served approach.

I get the "club" seating benefits, but most places with club seats have their own level that doesn't take up much of the sideline seating. Our arrangement is very different where they get a huge area of general, sideline seating space, plus a large club. Most schools with club seating either play in an NBA type arena or they have very good teams that aren't dependent on crowd noise to win. Clemson needs a raucous arena, unfortunately, our new seating arrangement suffocates our home court advantage.

This is on DRad. I think the first order of business for the new AD, from a BB perspective, is to change the seating arrangement and the ticket distribution to the students.

No amount of money and no number of fans will improve CBB’s ability to inspire winning ways and late game confidence in our players. It has been the same year after year and roster after roster.

1980. That was my freshman year. We best the coots in football and wore the orange britches for the first time. Then the bb team went the elite 8. Would have won it all if they would have had new orange britches. No money for bb.
