I didn't need to. I live in Manitowoc, WI. I had just moved there shortly after that girl was killed. This guys is a monster. The Netflix documentary only told one side of the story. Kind of what Michael Moore does with his movies, (i.e. Fahrenheit 911). There is so much more they failed show. This guy poured gasoline on a cat and threw the cat in a fire. Just to give you an idea what kind of person you are dealing with. To make an intelligent decision about anything you need all the facts. You are not receiving all the facts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The documentary mentioned the cat

in one of the earlier episodes...

They covered the cat thing in the Netflix series. Doesn't mean he killed the lady. Way too many questions for me to have been able to convict. But, stuff like this happens more than any of us would like to admit. Cops think you're guilty and try to make the evidence work. Read the book by Grisham called an innocent man. Same type thing happened there as well.

Agree, and this is the problem with our justice system..

Someone that lives in the county it happened

Feb 4, 2016, 8:54 AM [ in reply to Re: Anyone else seen Making a Murderer on Netflix? ]

paints him as a monster, how predictable.

You talk about the cat instance which happened when he was a teenager and was still mentioned in the documentary.

Love your logic through, he killed a cat so he surely murdered the woman.

I personally think the ex-boyfriend did it and planted the car there.

He had access to her phone and they "conveniently" found the car within five minutes when he was in the search party.

Re: Someone that lives in the county it happened

My biggest issue is that they say she was either shot in the garage or her throat was cut in the bedroom. Where is all the blood?

I am not saying he is innocent, his DNA being on the car is an issue... but the lack of her blood anywhere on the property would keep me from saying he is guilty without a reasonable doubt.

The only place her blood was found was in the back of her car... if he killed her, he never had any reason to put her in the back of her own car (to which he then decided it was a great idea to go and just park it on his land??)

He may have done it, but there is a lot we dont know about that day and the story that was told could not have been it because of the lack of blood.

I watched about one episode, couldn't get into it.

If I recall, this guy would also flash his own cousin when she drove by his home.

He does have some odd behavior but that doesn't equal murder.

You obviously dont know what facts are and are not in the documentary...I wonder how much more you would learn if you did watch as you presumably only had the info from the media.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would hesitate to draw any conclusion

Feb 4, 2016, 2:47 PM [ in reply to Re: Anyone else seen Making a Murderer on Netflix? ]

Either way. It's a documentary that tells his account and presents facts mostly favorable to him. I did read some other evidence that was less favorable was omitted. It was clearly intended to paint him as innocent, not present the entire story.

The one conclusion I totally willing to take away from all this is that police and investigators operated under a presumption of guilt - not innocence when investigating. They assumed they knew who committed this crime and they let that taint their allegedly impartial investigations. If I ever found myself the subject of an investigation I'm not sure I would ever feel comfortable talking with investigators without an attorney after seeing this.

One other note, it is certainly worth pointing out that Manitowoc county was clearly on a big financial hook had this case not been prosecuted in their favor based on the outcome of the overturned rape conviction. This was certainly not your ordinary public pressure to prosecute an young girl's killer. They stood to save a large settlement if Avery was convicted.

That almost as important as context. He threw a cat in a fire when he was 17. 40 years ago.
That has nothing to do with his guilt or innocence. The question is did he get a fair trial...ummm no. And worse I think is the job the young cousin had done on him by his own attorney.

New trials all around. If the system isn't fair for one man it can't be fair for any of us.

If you like that you should watch the older HBO paradise lost documentaries. (3)
I still try to research some of those involved every once in a while. Each time I do I think the west Memphis 3 are guilty. Then I think they are innocent and it was Hobbs.

Seriously since it's REAL and the story is so tragic, it haunts your thoughts about the truth.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Guilty or not. It is slanted to one side. One thing I did find interesting was they were talking about how he would have to use bleach and everything else to clean the bedroom and garage. Then they show the laundry room and there are like 8 empty bottles of some kind of cleaning solution (labels were missing).

Slanted or not. Stephen Avery didn't get a fair trial. On what planet is being investigated by police you are suing for millions of dollars considered ok? (The lawsuit wasn't going to be covered by insurance). Those same police officers found a lot of the key evidence. He should be out on those facts alone; the whole investigation is tainted.

After the first 4 episodes I was sure he was innocent. By the end I felt like he was probably guilty BUT he should definitely have a different trial in a different part of the state.

I mean they spent a surprising amount of time on the fact that if he is guilty he always says he is guilty (in the case of the cat). Of course when you're looking at maybe a few years but when you are looking at life even a preacher would lie through his teeth.

The one element of the trial that stuck out

Feb 5, 2016, 5:35 PM

was the testimony of the deputy. Under oath he testified that he did not recall how he was able to call in the lady's license tag # to dispatch and identify the car as a 1999 Rav 4. The call was recorded on Nov. 3rd, but the car was not "found" until Nov. 5th.

I don't know if he did it or not, but there was TONS of evidence for reasonable doubt, not least of which was the vile of blood from 1985 that had been unsealed and had a hole in the top.

Finding the key to her car, with Avery's dna on it, but NO dna of the woman who'd driven the car everyday for 6 years was pretty bad. And the idea they found it, laying in plain site the 7th time they searched his 10x8 bedroom.

Ugly all around. Scary for all of us.
