Across the globe a Billion, with a capital B, people will watch today's World Cup final. We love our sports but we are not even close to the soccer fans around the world.

Very true.
America started (US) football, baseball, basketball. There have been lots of choices for kids over the years.
In Latin America, SA and Europe, soccer dominates as it's somewhat of an international language for nations that neighbor each other.

You need to define “best athlete”. Most of the best and dedicated athletes I’ve worked with are soccer players. The laziest are football players.

Its all just opinion and I’m not trying to pick a fight. It’s just comical to me how people discount soccer athletes in the US.
What makes a great athlete? Ability to catch a ball? Throw a ball? Is it speed? Agility? Stamina? Skill? Strength? Jumping ability?
Half the NFL is morbidly obese and couldn’t run a mile if you gave them all day…but they can bench press a house and run for 8 seconds at a time, then take a rest for a minute. Is that the definition of great athlete?
Personally I believe the “best athletes” are found doing the decathlon/pentathlon.
It’s irritating to see people discount soccer just because the don’t like the game.

You have no choice but to be an athlete when playing soccer. It does not stop for timeouts or commercials. I played and in high school I would say soccer, basketball and tennis were the most athletic. Football had athletes but most were big and overweight and would have dropped dead if you had told them to sprint to the other end line and back.

What soccer player could play American football? Dang only the goalies could attempt to be receivers because no other players know how to use their hands.
My kids don’t stop for timeouts or commercials either but they are not top notch athletes.
When a soccer player runs full speed they attempt to kick a ball. When a football player runs full speed they are trying to kick the ever living crud out of another human being.

Even though I like soccer, I know that a lot of the US does not and it is arguably the 4th or 5th most popular sport in the US. Those are just facts.

They don't need helmets, pads or anything else if they play shirts and skins. Well, they need shirts but USCe sends thousand a year to third world countries after the 5th game of the season when they realize they aren't playing for another SECCCG for the 1000th time in a row.

I don't know if they counted on me to watch today, but if so the number of viewers will be 1 billion minus one. If America was good enough to make the final, I'd watch. I'd also watch if they'd change the rules to disallow the goalkeeper from touching the ball with his hands, implement a rule that the team with the ball can't backtrack across the midfield line once crossed, and get rid of the offsides penalty. As an American, I want to see scoring, and a lot if it.

I'm old - that's admittedly part of the problem.
Dec 18, 2022, 11:06 AM
[ in reply to Re: 1 Billion people ] |

There was no soccer around me when I was growing up. My high school had no soccer team. It was all football, basketball, and baseball. We had track, golf, and tennis as well. No soccer. My first interest in soccer was when I.M. Ibrahim brought championship soccer to Clemson, and Obed Ariri and Donald Igwebuike kicked for Clemson Football. All of that was great. Here's the thing about soccer in America ...
In many, perhaps most parts of the world, soccer is the biggest, most popular, most culturally ingrained sport. That is not the case in America. I know that hurts a lot of people's feelings, but it's the truth. Nothing to explain or apologize for. As demographics and attitudes change, that could (and probably will) change as well, but for the foreseable future, soccer will remain down the list. That doesn't make the U.S. ignorant or out of touch or "wrong" in any way; we just have a different history and culture. That seems to bother some people.
Soccer means a lot in most parts of the world. It does not mean as much in the U.S.A.. That's not wrong, it's the reality. It's not hate. It may change over time. Nothing needs explaining or correcting.

What you say about soccer in the past in the USA is correct .
Dec 18, 2022, 11:27 AM

But I think it’s changing faster than you think now. I can see the difference already from even just 5 years ago or so to now.
Soccer is way more available to Americans to watch. MLS is expanding every year, every major European league is available to be fully streamed. Can watch every game of the Premier league, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and more if you wanted to.
It’s more popular on social media among young people as well. Soccer is one of the only sports with an average fan age that is getting younger.

are disagreeing with, regarding my post.
I acknowledge that soccer is growing in popularity in the U.S.. My daughters played soccer. I know there are soccer channels available 24/7. I get it. But still, culturally, and in overall popularity, soccer remains behind the big three. Only in the last decade do we have the first widely based generation of adults who grew up playing soccer, and of course interest and ratings will reflect that, now and going forward. Massive illegal immmigration will continue to be an impact as the culture changes due to those factors. It's generational, and it's happeneing, we just aren't there yet.
Football, baseball, and basketball still rule, because they are much, much more ingrained in our culture. Sure it's changing, and that's fine. That's no mystery, it's not complicated or controversial. Soccer just means less in America than it does in most other parts of the world, where soccer is everything.

beloved until at least after I croak, which could be sooner than later with this Covid. I have tried to like soccer, all the way back to when I was at Clemson and Coach Ibrahim had nationally highly ranked teams. It is just too dang boring for me. And, as I always say, the fact that the game purposely prohibits you from using the most useful appendages God gave you, as a rule, is a big time turnoff.

They can have it…

This country started going down hill when soccer started to get popular… coincidence? I think not!
Just kidding, but I do hate soccer as a sport
- ties are communist - flopping is for millennials - stoppage time is for refs on the take - not sure what they are doing sliding around out there, but where I come from that sure that ain’t tackling

That was an incredible match

I'm thankful that I can enjoy great soccer instead of being on the miserable posters that seek out soccer posts to specifically voice their disdain of the sport.
I hope yall enjoyed watching your paint dry. Personally a f*cking hate painting with a fiery passion, but this was one of the best championship games/matches I've ever watched for any sport. Glad I don't have to change places with yall.

2 Billion people lack access to safe drinking water

After soccer, the most popular sports in world are cricket, field hockey and tennis. You going to go crazy posting cricket World Cup results next?
Who cares what people watch? Enjoy what you want, and I’ll care about soccer every 4 years just like I do water polo.
That being said, todays match was fun to watch. I’ll be sure to tune in again in 4 years.

Doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I'm not watching that boring ### #### but if you like it then by all means enjoy it.

I'm not particularly concerned with what the rest of the world does. Our sports are uniquely American, and that is more then good enough for me. If you want me to watch soccer then shorten the match and widen the goal.
