The ACC, to put it mildly, was not good at Footsball

in 1969. Our Conference Champion was a mediocre team (7-3 regular season record) from Cooterville that:
Got boat raced by (SEC) Georgia to the tune of 41-16.
Got boat raced by independent Florida State to the tune of 34-9.
Got boat raced by (SEC) Tennessee to the tune of 29-14.
Embarassingly, they defeated our Tigers 27-13 at the Roach, showing just how bad the rest of the league was.
As Conference Champion, they lost in what back then was considered a minor bowl (Peach Bowl) to West Virginia, 14-3.
Pepsodent Paul Dietzel was actually named ACC coach of the year for that stellar year.
When they could not repeat their success the following year, they decided they had had enough of the ACC, and after being able to win it only once in 18 tries, they took their toys and left.
Boys, We, and the ACC, have come a LONG way since then.

1969 was a long, long time ago.

1969 was more than twice as close to WWII than it is to 2019.
Yep, Clemson was not competitive with the SEC in those long forgotten days. Since those dark ages, Our Tigers have won 3 Nattys. Of all the teams in the Big Bad SEC, only Bama has more Natty's since 69 than any team in the SEC not named Alabama.
Speaking of the SEC, it's worth noting that in their last 46 games against teams from the Pac12, Big12, Big Ten and ACC combined, the league that loves itself to death is 23-23. Yep, the mighty, mighty SEC is breaking dead even with the other Power 5 leagues. But somehow, SECers think their 23 wins just means more than their 23 losses.

Yes, indeed, the ACC was just plain awful in 1969. NOT ONE ACC TEAM beaten by the Gamecocks that year had a winning record for the season.
