The absurd, disgusting ESPN narrative about last nights game and
13

the playoff in general, per the College Game Day Crew:
1. Notre Dame showed their worth last night by a total domination of Indiana.
2. Indiana did not belong in the 12-team playoff because they are clearly not one of the 12 best teams.
3. WE know this, and we need to make sure "the best" teams are in going forward.
Problem: NOBODY knows who "the best" team is, or best 12 are. That's the whole purpose of a playoff, and playing games to begin with. This is not a beauty contest. If that kind of determination can be made after a single game, then ND was eliminated with their loss to 7-5 Mid-American powerhouse, Northern Illinois. Therein lies the fallacy - that we can determine the "best". That concept needs to be dropped immediately, and replaced by rewarding winning, and EARNING your way into the playoff on the field, not by impressing critics and talking heads. Somehow, college football needs to be restructured in a way that provides some sense of balance based on $$$ spent on football by schools, then have a playoff that, like almost every other sport, that strictly rewards winners, with talking heads or "experts" on committees having as little input as possible, preferably zero.
For instance, Texas was beaten TWICE by another playoff team (UGA), once in a fairly dominating fashion. There is no logical, reasonable way to think that they may be "the best"; as long as winning matters, they have already been eliminated twice by another playoff team. The playoff is full of many such examples. It can't be about the perceived best; it has to be about earning your way in by winning your conference/whatever, like the NFL/MLB.
Think about rankings, even the official CFP rankings. At best, they are a guess. They change weekly, and over the course of a season, they change dramatically. They are solid proof that, even up to the very end, they are wrong much of the time. Why are we letting them determine who is "best"? It's a joke, and now that it is so clearly driven by $$$, it's flat out wrong.
I love college football, and I hate to see it reduced to merely a product that is driven entirely by marketing and media opinion. It isn't a beauty contest, it's an athletic competition, and as much as humanly possible, should be determined through competition on the field.
Oh, and GO TIGERS! We won our conference championship, and we belong!

This a good point, there will be never be an objective answer when you get to these “best vs most deserving” arguments. I mean even during the 4 team playoff , most years, there was considerable debate about the 4th seed.
Indiana was the only remaining one loss p4 team, therefore they get in…it was a clean enough argument and it didn’t rely on “eye test” or endless SOS transitive property arguments.
Would an SEC team or Miami been a better match up? Sure, but “creating the best matchups” is the most subjective nightmare of a criteria for the Committee to use.

matchup - that's just it. Sure, easy to say, but would the Alabama team that lost to Vandy or more recently got drubbed by unranked Oklahoma have been a better matchup? The Ole Miss team that lost to unranked Kentucky and Florida? The absurd, clearly false narrative of the SEC simply being "better" has to be flushed down the toilet without apology or a second thought.

That's why I don't even mind a 16 team playoff. Some teams had injuries or young players hot better as the year goes on. The teams that progress as the season goes on have a chance. I think the NY Giants won the Superbowl as a wildcard and they finished the regular season 8-8 or 9-7. You never know who gets hot in college football either.

The Ole Miss and Alabama teams that beat #2 Georgia and South Carolina would have put up a better fight than the undeserving Indiana team with zero wins over teams with a pulse. An objective idiot could see that.

If the season was shortened to 10 games and 32 teams were put in the playoff, people would still question who was picked and not picked. The pollsters and TV commentators will always have an opinion.

That narrative is rooted in the push for the SEC and B1G to break away and form their own league.
But if you look at the NFL playoffs you see the same thing. Teams getting into playoff spots with .500 records and other teams with 10+ wins getting left out due to being in stronger conferences. It's just the way it is. And it's the way it's supposed to be.

Rule number 1 in a debate.
1
Dec 21, 2024, 10:35 AM
|
|
1. Find out the premises of the person you are debating with. Discern what he is accepting as fact and building his argument off of this fact or facts.
Rule number 2.
Recognize his conclusion will always be consistent with his premise. His argument may be very reasonable and logical if his premise is true. But if his premise is false then, no matter how reasonable and logical his argument is, his conclusion may still be false.
Rule number 3.
Attack his premises, not his argument.
In this case, the premise is, "The B1G and SEC are clearly superior to the ACC and Big 12." So, their conclusion cannot be, "Indiana doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs because they played in a weak conference." If they conclude Indiana doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs, then it cannot be because of the conference they played in. It must be something else.

no team from 8-12 actually has a chance on winning the championship anyways, which is the only purpose of the playoffs to begin with. Put whatever teams using whatever criteria you want in those spots, won’t matter to me. Should have been an 8 team playoff, 12 is dumb.

When you think about it the rankings have actually always been a beauty contest. I will agree that a 12 team playoff at least allows for some sense of earning the "beauty" you get from the media. In the end a certain amount of eye test is required until there is a overall league with divisions that get in based on merit alone.

I have no memory of there being any year when the CFB playoff produced 2 good semis and then a good final. Maybe that happened one year, but I don’t remember it. My memory is that most years there were 2 teams that were better than everyone else. A few years there was either 1 team that was better than everyone else or there were 3 teams that were close in talent and ability. No years were there ever 4 teams.
So why was the 12 team playoff necessary? MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!!!!!!
The 12 team playoff is fine, but lying about the reason for the 12 team playoff smacks of scumbags with an agenda. The agenda is MONEY and the scumbags are now fully in control of the money train.
