Got my self evaluation end of year review last week
Feb 21, 2020, 1:27 PM

Submitted it on Tuesday or Wednesday
Got a text last night that I need to be at the office at 1 to discuss with boss man.
Told him 1 didn’t work (pickup kids) and he settled on 4:30
Do I bring a sixer to go ahead and kick off happy hour with him?

6 super broad questions that you could answer in 3 words or 3 books.
It’s definitely HR inspired. After 40 years of being a free for all, we are trying to actually function like a real company. Operations manager wants these year end reviews on file and sent out an email last week, which is why I got mine last week. Apparently mine is the on,y one left and my boss looks like a goof for not being able to get a review from his lone employee.
I can’t wait til these guys have to answer to a sales manager (another new role) in a few months.

back. Everybody teamed up and said how great everyone else was. That wasn't what HR was looking for, so they threw the whole thing out and started over again and I was back to doing my teams' reviews.

Please a list the goals and objectives you have worked on in 2019 (I’m in 100% commish sales, take a stab at what I’ve worked on)
Describe the results you achieved bs your goals and objectives.
Did you have any shortfalls vs goals and objectives? If so, give some thought to what they may be.
In your view what are your areas of greatest strength.
In what areas could you benefit from some improvement or development?
Looking forward, what do you feel should be your primary goals and objectives for 2020? (Hint, we are only measured on one metric, final sales number, how would you answer?)
What training and development plans would you like to be in place to support your career development and growth? (We have no training, there are no paths to progress, the only possibility is sell more and make more)

Some of those are kind of stupid for sales only

Years ago I used to get to hang out with some of our sales guys. Sale mgr instituted some new "bonus" systems for those folks that basically after a certain amount of sales, they didn't make any more money. I didn't understand that at all. Why would you limit you sales folks from selling?? As you would think...it was a morale killer for them.

Sadly we don’t get real bonuses tied to performance, so there’s really no incentive to try harder
In our field, half of it is blind luck.
Stopping your sales people at a certain level seems ridiculous, unless you are making widgets and the factory can only make X widgets in a year and the sales people shouldn’t sell what they don’t have in inventory. I completely believe that’s not the case with your example.

We’ve done these in my 12 years here.
This one was done by the 3rd party HR consultant and I think it shows.

the Best is when you’re on the mgmt side and bonuses

Are tied to reviews. I’ve had truly great teams under me before who would have all gotten 4’s and 5’s, but HR would tell you “you can give one person on your team a 5, 30% 4’s, 40% 3’s, and 30% 2’s. It’s all because senior leadership only allocated X amount for bonuses so they mandate forced rankings.
Next to laying a good employee off, one of the worst feelings of my life was delivering a 2 review to an employee Who absolutely deserved a 4. It quickly soured our relationship and turned them into a 2 employee. When corporate America steps on their own diiicks, they do it with style.

You were at least giving bonuses based on performance, even if it was trumped up distribution.
Ours are insultingly low for what we bring to the company

Really got the 2, because you’re still ranking them behind their peers, so the “why me” feeling is inevitable, so you have to play this game like it’s a real review and here’s where they need to improve.

I came away with
I’m ok at sales
I lack a sales background, I was 27 when hired with no sales experience per my resume
A few minor tweaks and I’ll be selling $50k more this year
I’ve got every quality to be a shareholder/partner except insane sales numbers. *its not about the money
I still have a job and our new president is leading us to great places, so we will be great!!!
