DJ's grounding at GT

Rewatching the game and just saw the grounding call. The play was on 3rd & 3 after a Shipley 6-yard run on 2nd down.
The playv was set up for a shuttle pass to Davis Allen. If completed that pass would have gone nowhere with 3 Tech defenders around Allen, who was short of the line to gain.
Poor play calling here. I like passing to Allen, but how about a slant or crossing route past the line of scrimmage?

as if to say "Can you not see how firetrucking wide ants open I am?" Once right in front of the goal line in the center of the field. DJ took a sack.
Guys are getting open.

I saw several plays where we had multiple receivers out on both sides and we had a numbers advantage on one side of the field pre-snap and he never looked to that side of the field.

Watson’s throw to Jordan Leggett at the end of the Bama win was a “bad pass” for sure ... but it was a completion.
Our guys have simply got to begin making catches.

That play highlighted one of the differences between Cade

and DJ.
DJ was rolling to his right and threw an awkward pass too far out in front. Allen could have made a great catch, but it should have been a relatively easy TD.
Contrast that to the passes Cade made on the move to his right. His TD Pass in a similar play was perfectly timed and placed. Cade makes that play look easy. Cade's mechanics are smooth and his passes are accurate.

DJ can't see past the end of his primary receiver. I don't believe he has a clue where any of the others are. I think he knows the playbook well enough and can sit and tell you where every receiver is going but when the ball is snapped he zones out and reverts to sandlot quarterbacking. He got by on his height, talent and arm skill for so long he forgot how to think on his feet.

That was an ugly play and could have been worse with extending the ball away and trying to get rid of it. I'm surprised they don't add penalty yards to IG calls - they just treat them like sacks and spot the ball at the scene of the crime.
Keep in mind we run a ton of scripted playcalls in openers, with different alignments, testing the waters on a lot of the installation elements, figuring out what's what and who can do what. There's plenty of boneheaded looking calls and play in openers, but part of that is forcing the issue and dialing it in from there.
