And tagging Obed® in particular.
I'll be there this weekend for the first time. Sans the Missus but with some colleagues. I like to drink. I like tasty, unhealthy food. I like country music but also like to able to have conversations in bars without shouting. I don't like tourist traps. That pretty much sums it up. Give me your recs.
Obed, I may be able to break away Friday or Saturday night for a drink or two if you want to meet and argue in real time. But it may be touch and go.

they are somewhat country music fans, said that they were surprised at the lack of country music, was mostly rock etc in places they went to. Maybe it was just their sample size

everybody that ever goes to Nashville isn't willing to venture much past Broadway so yeah...I see how it would seem that way. I was lucky enough to have a nephew there for the last decade+ finding the cool spots that are devoid of bachelorette parties.

The Basement East, Bluebird Cafe, Exit/In, 3rd & Lindsley, Mercy Lounge, Station Inn, and City Winery are all places to look for good music. The Stage, Tootsie's, Legend's Corner, and Robert's Western World are the only must-stop places on Broadway if you've never been, you can flush everything else. Just Tootsie's and Robert's if you want the icons and then get out because it's NEVER uncrowded down there.

at Studio B many years ago. Part of the deal was I told him I wanted a behind the scenes tour, so one day my daughter and I went and took him up on it. I think she was around 7 or 8. So we are walking around getting to see all the cool stuff up close, and he says to my daughter "You want to play this piano?" She hacks out a really bad Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and he says "congrats, you just played Elvis Pressley's favorite piano". Pretty cool moment.

Haven't read the thread so pardon any duplication....
If you absolutely have to hit Broadway, and you shouldn't if you hate tourist stuff, then Robert's Western World is probably the only "Honkey Tonk" worth hitting for a quick beer or two. If you go down the end (broadway and 1st ave), Acme Feed and seed usually has smaller crowds and a nice rooftop bar overlooking the river.
The twelve-thirty club is up the hill on Broadway, and part of a larger dining complex, but it's Justin Timberlake's club and a nice old-school place to hear some live music in an old school atmosphere while having dinner.
A few blocks off broadway is Printer's Alley with some decent bars, and it's touristy too, but it's a slightly classier touristy, if that's possible. It's not old Nashville, but it feels more old Nashville.
Still near downtown is The Gulch and 12 South....places you could get mugged or shanked 10+ years ago, but quite upscale today, with some nice restaurants.
If it's a nice day and you want to walk around, the Parthenon (right beside Vandy's campus) is seriously a cool place. Sounds hokey but it's ###### impressive and a great park.
Music---check the Ryman calendar---one of the greatest places you'll ever see a show if someone you like is playing there. The Station Inn has the best bluegrass you'll ever hear most evenings, Third and Lindsley is great, and the Basement and Basement East are good but not incredibly unique other than the talent they bring in.
East Nashville is a cool area.....some good local bars and restaurants. The Pharmacy makes a great burger. Any Edley's BBQ location is fantastic (get the burnt ends over grits). Southern Grist taproom is great (also Vinyl Tap is a cool place---used record store and bar combo).
German town is cool too---great restaurants and bars....Bearded Iris taproom is cool and beer is good.
LMK if you're eyeing anything more specific to do. I will be out of town unfortunately but glad to try and steer you in whatever direction you want.
Oh yeah....don't do Hattie B's hot chicken. That's the tourist move. Go to Prince's.

Expensive drinks, but very cool place and they aren't stingy on liquor pours. Printer's Alley lost the mojo it had in the 80s. Back then, you could stroll by and it would literally be a who's who of jazz and blues playing there. It's still cooler than Broadway, but nothing like it was back when that whole area was a complete feces hole and you were taking your life into your hands by going down there. I actually like Hattie B's but you're right...it's the tourist thing to do and the line is always way down the block. I like both, but I don't HAVE to have hot chicken when I go to Nashville anymore. Plenty of other fantastic food options to explore.

Tiger Bar in East Nashville is brand new and all the hipster rage. Vintage circus theme and a bajillion craft cocktails.
"Hidden Bars" are also kind of the new Nashville trend, which are better than the other trend of bro-country owned bars.
The Late Great is underneath the Virgin Hotel, and it's supposed to be like the old artist B-Rooms in recording studios. Looks sort of cool.
The Red Phone Booth is actually a (you guessed it) Red Phone Booth that you have to dial the right number on the rotary phone to get the secret door to open to the bar. Go to their website to find the current number to dial
Hidden Bar (that's the name) is apparently decorated in a tribute to "A Christmas Story" right now, so that's solid. It's in the basement of the Hotel Noelle
There's one more that looks cool that I cannot think of the name at all right now but will dig.
