It’s says they did that in the event another year is awarded, but why wouldn’t they just want to stay at Clemson if they are granted another year?

Clemson may not have a scholarship available…..
Just a contingency, in case they are awarded an additional year by the NCAA.

They entered the portal in case they can get another year of eligibility due to transferring. I think there is a pending lawsuit or ruling that may grant an extra year to transferees.

It's a gamble to get another year of college basketball...

No. Transferring doesn’t get you another year.

They are hoping to get another year. By entering the portal, they keep their options open for where to play IF THEY GET another year.

There is a risk that Clemson’s roster is full before they are granted a year.

We don’t know. If they want to, and if Brownell wants them to, and if we have an opening…then it’s a possibility.
