Are you asking why students attend or why SHOULD they attend?

That’s what it should be. It’s ok to sprinkle in a few extras that will only be used in future trivia pursuit games but learning a skill to make a living should be the focus. In many cases it’s not that at all and a complete waste of time and money.

No. Also, it used to be that a degree was good enough even if it was, let's say Sociology. The fact that that person went to college meant something. Now students better go with a plan or have one within a year or two of being in college, so they can adapt while there.

Having a plan is the key as you said. Getting any degree for the sake of getting a degree is often worthless and sometimes leads to feelings of entitlement. Many kids can do much better financially by never going to college. Some need college. It’s just boils down to having a plan. A good plan can work great with or without college.

It took me one semester and a candid conversation with an academic advisor to figure out my idea, although honorable and noble, wasn't going to cut it so I switched majors. Best move I ever made.

If you come from a wealthy family and aren't likely to ever have to seek employment then attending for whatever reason you wish seems fine, but otherwise you better attend with a plan that whatever you've spent will be recouped many times over by whatever degree you earn. If only some of the out of state philosophy majors with six figure student loan debt had followed this advice, they wouldn't all have their hands out expecting the rest of us to pay their bills.
