What would you do / what would make you feel better about Clemson Football?

Seriously, what do you want to see with Clemson football? All answers acceptable. I’m torn but it feels like we’re in a spot where we can chose to be the righteous mediocre program (nothing wrong with that if it’s your priority ) or make the changes to adapt to the new landscape of College football.

I chose the later and here’s what would make me feel better about the direction of the program:

1. Dabo acknowledging that the transfer portal is now a critical part of roster management and a commitment to use it more to address roster needs. RB, Safety, Oline, QB are all areas where we should have gotten more functional depth this past off season. If our backups at these positions are so ill prepared that we’re unwilling to try them out, we mismanaged the situation and were lied to. Heck, maybe our starters should be backing up a transfer…I don’t want to buy a new team every year but I am also tired of being told “we like who we have” and watching them continuously kill our plays.

2. I don’t care how it happens but I want a new offense. Either acknowledge that Riley was brought in to run an offense that wasn’t his, and set him free to run an offense that is his, OR bring in a new offensive staff and let them run whatever the heck they want. The fact that Riley wasn’t allowed to bring a single person with him is very telling.

3. Clean house on nepotism hires. $550,000 for a RB coach for whom this is their first EVER coaching job of any kind, 2 of the three Turner brothers (I’d bet my next years pay it will be 3 of 3 when Cole graduates), 2 of three Swinney boys (same bet here), Joey Batson’s son…I’m not arguing that they’re bad guys but I’m guessing there’s not much risk of these dudes losing their jobs and I’d also bet they’re being paid well. It contributes to the identity of the program and the message of being comfortable. I’ve always respected parents that encourage their children to find their own way and prove themselves outside of a family company with the understanding that there’s a spot for them after that time.

4. If these things can’t happen….. maybe it’s time to thank Dabo for the HUGE amount of work he’s put in and for all the amazing things he’s done, but ask him to let the program move forward into the new age of college football.

Agree on 1 and 2

3. This is a very common practice at all major football programs.

4. If and when 4 happens, this program will be set back for years and years. Texas, Nebraska, A&M, Miami, etc spent decades hiring and firing coaches and it never worked out. You could argue maybe Ga too. It was not until the dollar became the driving force that these teams lifted out of the cellar. You take Dabo away, and have to compete on dollars, no way we get back to what we want.

1. I want to see something that can and will never happen. I would like to see performance based NIL.
2. I also would like to see the transfer portal be a once a year opening that lasts 3 days. After this period of time the player stays at that school for a year.
3. I would like to see a salary cap for school sports
4. I would like to see a salary cap for coaches
5. And this is most important of all the changes I want to see. I want the government out of college sports. There are enough real problems in this country for the government to work on without involving sports.

Thanks for the read and reply

I like most of your suggestions.

Number #1 could be accomplished through some type of bonus system but isn’t a possibility until they drop the farce that college football and basketball are still amateur athletics and start letting the schools pay the players directly. College football and basketball should be separated from the rest of the athletic department and treated as businesses. Once that happens you can put players on contracts and it would help with the constant transfers.

I’m a huge fan of coaching salary caps and think it would help a lot.

Is it possible to agree with 1 and 2 but in turn not 4? If you want those things and Dabo is unwilling to do them; are you ok with the probable result of being an ok-good team moving forward? Serious conversation because I’m grappling with that same question.

Definitely need to truly acknowledge and use the portal for all our roster deficiencies. That'd be a big start. Plus to start recruiting locally again. We need the SC, Georgia, Florida, NC kids filling this roster. No more California, Texas kids from different time zones.

But I'd also make all the starting spots open season. I don't care what year you are, experience, 4*-5*, whatever. Nobody is a starter until you prove it every single day. We need some hunger and players that give a dayum around here again. The culture stinks around there and nobody seems to care anymore. That's not what Dabo and all the other coaches and players built years before.

Definitely time to clean house of friends and family hires. It was cool when it was a guy here and there but having a big percentage as former players and family is just a recipe for disaster at almost any workplace.

Might have to let Riley go at the end of the year. Regardless if it's him running the offense or not, it's been 3 years and we've got zero QB development and the offense is stagnant and it stinks and it'll unfortunately carryover for any type of rebuild this program needs.

I think those 4 things NEED to happen to get us back in the right direction of being a perennial contender again. This program needs an entire rebuild in culture and fundamentals.
