Interesting article on Latin America/China/U.S.

Feb 18, 2021, 8:01 AM

Exploring how China has made major plays in the last four years to strengthen its trade and political influence in the region. It discusses how the Trump admin, early on, neglected Latin America (he only visited once) given Trump's tendency to just see the area as drugs and illegal immigrants. China smelled blood in the water and moved in. When we realized what was happening, we had to move quickly to undo some of their work, particularly in Panama, which is arguably our most important Latin American buddy.

Even more intriguing is the discussion about a rising future Cold War, which, you know, is fun.

Can add the entire Pacific Rim to China’s growing influence.

Complex world requires capable political and economic US policies. I’m not smart or well read enough to know what those policies may entail ___ other than than an “America First” slogan seems light on substance.

Seems wherever there’s a vacuum of world leadership and supportive economic policies, China is there to fill it.

It highlights the power of America post WW II, right?

Sometimes we're critical (I know I have been) of America trying to manage too much all over the world, but we see very quickly that when we pull back in one area, some bad characters rush in to fill the void.

Yes - Reservations about some US foreign policy engagements

Feb 18, 2021, 9:19 AM

is legit. Withdrawal is not the right answer. What is the right answer? That’s difficult.

Saw an interview with Tom Friedman where he says alignment with EU, Great Britain, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan, South Korea and others creates an economic force that can contain China’s expanding influence. Is that coalition feasible, what does it entail, can it work ____ who the heck knows.

If the US goes it alone, then a gradual decline in economic and foreign influence seems inevitable.

You lost me when you said “move quickly”

I didn't say anything about Biden.

Try reading the post again. Or, even better, read the article.

To go back into one of your posts and edit it so you don't have to post something new in the same thread. You did that three times yesterday in one thread.

Folks clouded comprehension is alarming...

Let's start with the contradiction between a trans-continental railroad and the Paris Accord. Is the railroad being built with green energy...and run thusly?

So, China's humanitarianism aka: Covid response. Ignore the Covid origin...hug the provider of supplies?

China is consumption-driven...as in consuming the world. Don't lose sight of the rare earth export position that China have adopted. So very, very dangerous to the world at large, not to mention the US defense mechanism...and other industry.

China is in a FAR better position than the former USSR ever dreamed of being in. Cold War won't do justice to the narrative...more like a Deep Freeze.

Personally, I check product labels. China is on my 'do not buy' list. There is singularly nothing good to come from ignoring/embracing any form of Chinese doctrine. Zilch.

"As Vice President, Biden visited the region a record 16 times, and he personifies the “good neighbor” approach to the region crafted by FDR. Biden was Barack Obama’s point person on initiatives to combat violence and drugs in Colombia, political corruption in Guatemala and more."

So how did Sniffy Joe do on those 'initiatives'? Less Coke, Heroin and Fentanyl making its way to the U.S? Less political corruption in those historically corrupt as h#ll countries? Less human trafficking? China's government is a malevolent force spreading around the world, and I refuse to buy anything made there whenever possible, but I have no faith whatsoever that a 50 year swamp rat in mental decline will be able to do a thing about it. Especially when his crackhead son is neck deep in 'business' deals with those godless commies.
