Tell us about your close encounters with dangerous animals

8

May 3, 2023, 4:39 PM

I posted a story in another thread RE: my experience during my Senior year at Clemson with a pi$$ed off momma black bear when I inadvertently came between her and her cub. She gave me a good run and I likely hurt myself worse trying to get away. I have quite a few as I worked in the woods, swamps, and fields day in and day out early on in my career. Tell us about yours. Please omit your experiences during trips to Willy B and Athens. Those are a given.

I've been bitten by dogs on a few occasions while running UPS routes.

I suppose you could, but...

2

my guess is that it would be covered by workers comp insurance and the carrier would then subrogate against the owner of the dog and the owners liability insurance.

I try to make sure my dogs are put away when I know UPS or FedEx is delivering. Every once in a while I get a surprise delivery and the dogs are out. My dogs are not biters but the 130 lb German Shepherd is intimidating. Most of the drivers I've seen here when the dogs are out throw out a couple dog treats and they have a new friend.

Although, that won't work for some dogs that are just mean.

I know You said no Willy B but it's the day I became a Clemson Tiger fan. Let me explain. I was born and raised a Gamecock fan. I married a Clemson Girl and a Clemson Graduate's Daughter in 1968. Her Dad and I would be in Clemson for games at Noon and drive to Willy B at night to see them play. I became a Clemson Fan on November 19th, 1977. That date should be familiar and Yes it was the day of "The Catch" by Jerry Butler. I literally had to fight my way out trying to protect my Wife in Orange. I knew then that I would never be a fan on any school that had fans that bad. We really were members of IPTAY before but it was in my Wife's name. I will never pull for them even if they are playing Red China.

WOW! When I worked in Hell Hole Swamp in McClellanville in 1963 I probably killed dozens and dozens of copperheads and a few canebreak Rattlers in one summer internship! It became routine. The snakes were a very small problem. The mosquitoes and Yellow Flys were a real problem. I used an entire case of Army insect repellent and had hundreds of bites…everyday.
As a forester you get to meet a lot of unusual furry characters in the woods. Most will cause you no harm. A pack of wild, hungry dogs however are a different concern. I’ve been “treed” a few times.
I once fell into a deep gully and landed on my back. When I was able to get up I looked around the area and a few buzzards were standing near me …ready for lunch!

Always something going on in the Blue Ridge Mountains but I sure enjoyed my years spent walking the hills … alone!

I, too, worked in that area for a time doing research for a coarse woody debris project related to the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo. I was closer to the Huger/Cordesville area.

I was checking a few hoop net traps one afternoon that we'd set to catch and mark turtles. The water in these "sloughs" was jet black and shallow. When I walked up on the trap, I noticed that the metal poles on either side that keep the trap above water were bent at a 90 degree angle. My first thought is, "there is no turtle big enough to bend these poles". And, I was right. I put my hands under the water to try to unwrap the net from the bent poles and a 7ft gator rolled up to the top. He was not pleased.

Next problem is how to get him out. My colleague and I dragged the trap up on the bank and the gator flipped, rolled, ran and hissed and finally freed himself after about 10 minutes. I grabbed him by the tail and got a few pictures before we'd both had enough. I still have one of those pictures framed in my workshop.

Good times.

Those swamps that were once rice plantations are truly amazing… from a flora and fauna standpoint. If you worked that area I strongly suggest that you read the works of Archibald Rutledge. He was the Poet Laureate of South Carolina and he grew up in this area we are discussing. He wrote several books about his life on the “slave”plantations” that are great reads … if you like that kind of tales.
“Woods and Wild Things I Remember” will be something that you would appreciate.

My daughter had spotted him from a distance at the garage door and let me know.

Apparently the snake was taking advantage of the warmth put out by the running appliance. He was actually pretty docile.

I got a broom and swept him into the trash can before dumping him in the woods away from the house.

Was walking on the trail a few paces behind a friend, and a rattlesnake struck straight from my friends leg, and he lept probably 2 feet off the ground. I was about two steps away from it myself. No harm, but it scared the bejezzus out of both of us.

Another time I was mountain biking way up in the Smokies, and ran right up on a black bear. He didn't know what to make of me, so the bear took off into the woods and I just about wet my pants.

I was taking a short cut through the woods after getting off the school bus my freshman year in high school when a Rattler almost got me. I jumped right out of my new school loafers and ran home in my socks. After about 15 minutes of gathering myself, I changed, grabbed a shovel and headed back. It was going to be me or the snake because I knew what would happen, if the loafers didn't come home. Luckily for me, the rattler was gone and I got my shoes.

Had to jump over a twelve foot gator on Bull Island. He was stretched across the causeway (water on both sides). My ride off the island was not going to wait and I didn’t want to spend the night there. Sand gnats and mosquitoes were everywhere. So, got a running start and broke an olympic record for the long jump. Hit the ground running and didn’t stop for a quarter mile. Straight causeway. Gator runs fast on a straight line. Same here. Buddy and I were running on MCAS Beaufort early AM. Thought there was a dead tree in the road. Turned out to be an 11-12 foot gator. We jumped right over and kept going. We always had to play around a few of them on Parris Islands golf course too. I was also bitten by a mama flying squirrel when I was cleaning out my bluebird boxes.

If you and your friends/family ever become curious about wanting to paddle board in deep ocean water, please don’t.

Had a bull shark come within inches of my paddle board. Had not a clue what to do but be still. It’s rare to happen, just be cautious.

Don’t have to be in deep water or even salt water for bull sharks. Been found as far up as Illinois in the Mississippi and then there was this one at Murrels Inlet.

Was on a bank fishing in a Kiawah pond when my line got caught in a tree. After freeing my line, I was about to cast when I spotted a gator in front of me, but still in the water. It was about 5 feet away. I left!

Another time while camping and hiking in Shenandoah, a bear warned me and my dog to walk away. My dog had picked up on the scent minutes earlier and stopped in his tracks and turned around. But no, I had to keep going. It hissed as we approached his blue berry patch. Should have listened to my dog.

Another time we were canoing down the New River . We had 2 adventurous pups on board with us as well.

About 70 yards in front of us I saw a black bear swimming across the river. We stopped paddling and tried to remain as quite as possible and hoping the dogs would stay a sleep.
When the bear reached the bank on the other side it paused and checked us out before running up the hill and into the woods.

The only time I ever got injured by a dangerous animal, was

4

May 3, 2023, 5:40 PM

all the way back when I was four or five years old. This older retired gentleman who lived near us had a BIG German Shepard that I used to ride like a pony. I had done this many times, with no issues.

Until, unbeknownst to me, the dog had gotten hit by a car since the last time I had seen him. When I jumped on his back, he proceeded to try and remove me from his back by removing my right foot, a bite at a time. By the time I hit the ground, my bloody foot looked like a bad pincushion. The old man felt terrible about the situation, but once everybody had all the facts, no one blamed the dog, not even me. I remember getting a tetanus shot, but if I got rabies shots, I do not remember them. And, I'm pretty sure I WOULD remember them.

The dog, who was named Rin Tin Tin after the comic book / movie dog, and I remained friends until the day he died. I never tried to ride him again, though!

Diving and spearfishing at one of the Edisto artificial reefs in about 90 feet of water a bull shark of about 8 or so feet decided he liked our kill. We decided to tie our kill to the safety line on the anchor and as we started to ascend the shark decided to try and take our kill and shredded the kill bag and our kill in the bag. We broke all rules getting out of the water.

Camped on an island in the Moraine River (Lake Iliamna drainage) during the red salmon run in "88.
Probably saw 70-75 big brown bears, some as close as 20 feet. When one came up the river, you just moved out into thigh deep water and let him have the bank - they paid no attention to us. Only once did a bear want to fish where we were fishing - so we let him. Sows with cubs would take them 300yds away up on the tundra. Was scary at first, then a nuisance. Made for some good photo ops.

Not an actual encounter

2

May 3, 2023, 11:18 PM

But the most frightened I have ever been was somewhere in Calhoun County about 20 years ago. I was surveying some land that hadn’t been surveyed in probably 80 years. The thickest underbrush I have ever witnessed. Anyway. . .

We (there was only two of us, and no phones or other ways to communicate to the outside world) were heading out of a low marsh area having to chop our way through a thicket of anything and everything that was so dense only one of us could use a bush axe at any given time.

After about 600 ft of slinging the ol’ Chinese chainsaw I cut down a tree to reveal in front of me the largest hornets nest I have ever seen til this day.

Woods were so thick there was no way we would be able to escape. Thankfully, the nest was dormant and nothing happened.

I’ve encountered countless large animals in the woods. However I always have a sidearm on me and am never frightened.

If that hornets’ nest would have been active there would have been nothing either one of us could have done besides pray.
