It's called an "Argyle" pattern and it was created for them by Tar Heel grad and clothing designer Alexander Julian.

It was explained to me by my wife's uncle (UNC graduate) in 1970 that the official color is "delphinium blue".
Since there are many dephinium varieties with various shades of blue, I assume the correct name would be "Delphinium Guardian Lavender (Candle Larkspur)".

I hate to break the news but that argyle pattern was a very common pattern in college football end zones back in the 60's. I have seen retro pictures/video of Death Valley and Clemson as well as the coots both used it.
