here in the upstate tonight. Haven’t seen a frost warning but not taking any chances. I’m going to cover my tomatoes. Just a heads up to you other good vegetable gardeners. Check the weather in your area.

Wind blowing above 5 mph should reduce the risk of frost tonight.

Thanks for the reply. I live a little ways out from the city and I usually get temperatures a couple of degrees lower than the airport. Plus the wind is already calm here. No breeze at all. I think I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Firing these cold snaps, tomatoes will survive down to almost freezing temperatures. Temperatures below the 50s will keep the flowers from getting pollinated and setting fruit, but they'll survive. If you haven't planted yet, that might be better; the cold temps will slow down the growth so much that any tomatoes planted later, in warmer temps, will actually catch up! Same goes for many vegetables. I would be more worried about all this rain causing root rot!

Grandma said don't plants any beans, tomatoes, squash, etc UNTIL you see leaves coming on the walnut trees. The walnut tree knows.
Right now, my walnuts are still as tight as a tick.

My Grandma always said to plant on Good Friday. Lots of times Good Friday falls in the middle of March. I know that is too early.

Our grandparents only said that because of the moon cycle. Most older generation people live by this because they think that Good Friday has a sort of spiritual implication to the plants doing better, but in reality it's because Easter is on the full moon cycle after the Spring Solstice.
That full moon creates a gravitational pull of moisture from the ground to the surface that helps germinate the seeds in the ground.
So it is perfectly acceptable to plant later especially if Easter falls in March. Just make sure to plant with the full moon cycle.

I live in a thermal belt so I don’t expect a frost tomorrow. I’ve lived in this same area since 1972 and have had one frost in those fifty years. I likely will bring in my house plants from the patio and deck just to be safe. I’ve never raised a vegetable in all my years of gardening. If it ain’t a Tater, I don’t eat it’ . This likely will be a very good year for gardeners if we can survive this week.”
It will be a very good years for Tiger sport fans and supporters . Hope to see every tnetter on the Valley Saturday.
