Lunge pro tip for Directv customers

Nov 2, 2015, 11:12 AM

Just a friendly head's up that if you want to call and renegotiate your rate with directv, now seems to be the time to do it. They really seem to be aware of this Dish TV $49 "lock your rate for two years" promotion, and have armed their retention people with ways to keep customers.

My bill had crept up to about $140 after taxes...I did the math and found that under the Dish promotion it would have been about $75/month.

Called DTV, told em I wanted to cancel and when she said "why", I told her their competitor was half their price. Within 3 minutes or so, and without trying hard, she had knocked my bill to $70/month (12 month commit), gave me a $50 credit on my next invoice, and gave me NFL Sunday pro ticket for the season for free. $840/year savings + $50 + $360 NFL package = $1250 saved from a 5 minute call...not bad.

Awesome, gonna call now.

Nov 2, 2015, 11:15 AM

My bill is sitting at about $140/month now too. Eff that noise.

next 12 months, and an additional $10/month for combining my AT&T mobility bill with DTV, whatever that accomplishes. So prolly $600/year. Thanks, Obed.

tia

I parsed the sentence. She actually said "why, that's an

interesting reason to call me.", so it was a declarative statement and she wouldn't have asked it.

Sunday tickets automatically renews each year

Nov 2, 2015, 11:18 AM

So you will get bill next year charging you for Sunday ticket. When you do just call and they will remove you and your charges from Sunday ticket. Just FYI

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right about the renew, but as long as I call them

Nov 2, 2015, 11:20 AM

before July 1st I won't get billed for 2016-17 sunday ticket.

Lawd, $140 for TV? I'll go without TV before I pay

Nov 2, 2015, 11:25 AM

over $70. That is my limit, every year I have to call Dish and threaten to cancel, then they kindly treat me as if I'm a new customer and give me a better deal. I'll never understand the "treat new customers better than loyal ones" business model.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I completely agree. I pay $13/mos for television

Nov 2, 2015, 11:31 AM

that includes Netflix, ABC, CBS, NBC, ESPN Go, HBO NOW, and FX. I think it also has History and A&E and something bs channels I don't watch.

Re: I get a bunch of HBO programming through Amazon prime***

Nov 2, 2015, 11:48 AM

Yea, nice perk with Prime but I don't need it as Comcast threw in HBO with my deal, so I get everything On Demand.

I do chuckle though when people brag about their bill, but they have to use someone else's login to do so

Dish SlingTV, holmes

That's why they want you on autopay.....

Nov 2, 2015, 11:32 AM [ in reply to Lawd, $140 for TV? I'll go without TV before I pay ]

it tends to take several months before you notice the BS tack-ons they start putting on there.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, AT&T taught me a lesson about autopay

Nov 2, 2015, 11:37 AM

They tried to charge me ~$100 for a supposed lost modem that I had sent back when it quit working. Had I been on autopay, I probably never would have seen that money again.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was my big problem with DTV, super expensive

Nov 2, 2015, 11:45 AM

and you'll have cost of internet on top of that. My DTV bill creeped up to $100 on the middle package. I ended up going with a Comcast bundle, paying about $100 for both internet and TV.

On a related note, Comcast seemed fully aware that Google Fiber is coming down the pipeline as they made that offer contingent upon a 2 year contract, but since they locked the price so I agreed. DTV also forces you into contracts, but doesn't lock the price.
