Sunday morning review of the FSU game
Oct 16, 2022, 11:28 AM
|
|
As always, I watch the game again on Sunday morning with the emotions out of the game. First thing, we won and we are 7-0. It's hard not to be happy about winning like this on the road.
DJ didn't turn it over and had some amazing passes and great plays with his feet. He's a really good player. I did see some old habits of locking in on one receiver and holding the ball a bit too long creeping back up in this game. It's hard to complain though, he's taking care of the ball and really playing well. He's been awesome on his feet.
The OL and RBs probably had their best game that I have seen this year. This group is not the best running-blocking OL we have ever had but I thought they opened holes in the middle occasionally in this game which was good to see. Ship and Mafa were both really good. Seems like every game McFadden has a costly holding penalty. He's our best OL but he needs to work on that.
Williams is amazing and Ngata played well. He needs to catch balls in his hands though, he had one drop but probably over-led. Seems weird but I don't think Collins caught a pass, so maybe I missed it.
Streeter continues to impress me as a play caller on some great creative plays and including the TE more and more. We get really conservative on 3 and long plays which I think almost cost us this game.
The DL had a rough game overall missing tackles and disappearing at times in the run game. Bresee and Davis might have been outplayed by William, Paige, and Roro. Bresee is working back as we all know but he was uncharacteristically missing tackles and honestly seems to be a liability while working back into game shape. No one blames the poor guy, just an observation.
The LBs probably had an average game as well. Bently looked lost at times but it might not be his fault (more on that later). This was probably Simpson's worst game and absolutely should have tackled the falling FSU runner on that TD.
I thought the secondary played well and the ACC refs seem super inconsistent with the pass interference calls but I digress, the refs weren't the reason FSU almost came back this game.
It seems like every week OCs are finding a new weakness to exploit with the Wes Goodman defenses. This week it was the WR screen game which is a little perplexing, don't they see that all the time in practice? Also, the FSU was able to pin a couple of great mismatches with their WRs on our LBs. Bently was caught up in several plays and I know Carter is a speedster but was also in space with an FSU WR for a TD. The FSU OL had some really good plays.
Special teams were amazing outside of one punt runback.
As I said, we're winning and that's all that really matters right? I think Syracuse might be a game folks - I know NCST was without their QB but they were dominated. The offense and defense better show up next week. Fans better pack that stadium too!
I never thought in a million years we would be singing the praises of DJ and worried about our DL at times this year. Strange.

in postgame interview w/Holly. Dabo was not happy and I believe it will translate to corrective actions this week.
Also, I think Nastee Taint has given up.

I know they are going to fix these things.
I mean, you get exposed without losing, its the best of both worlds. Wes is simply gaining experience and growing into a DC. He has HUGE shoes to fill!!

My thoughts are that we will be better because we let them back in the game. Dabo knows we need to keep our foot on their throats. That will be an emphasis moving forward. With 4 of the final 5 at home and the lone road trip coming after an open date, I feel as though we'll have a chance to really put these teams away.

It's too bad Dabo doesn't introduce his guys to Clemson grit like Brownell? Just think of the successes Clemson football might have had otherwise.
Too bad Dabo couldn't recruit players either when he arrived on the scene as a nobody.
I admire tour devotion to Brad, but the negativity towards the football program seems more than a bit misplaced.
FSU has some players now, their coach has them believing again and they played hard and well.
I'll take 7-0 and be happy.

Let me know when Dabo has ever had to coach a Clemson football team
Oct 16, 2022, 12:16 PM
|
|
that is funded in the bottom third of the ACC, with fan support near the bottom of the conference as well.
He’s had incredible advantages in his job that Brownell has never gotten to enjoy. So please stop making such ridiculous comparisons.
With that said, I’m thrilled to be 7-0. We are improving and putting ourselves in great position for the playoffs. That doesn’t mean our team is perfect, and it’s okay to discuss things.
The machismo here about Dabo being mad is silly. It implies that Dabo wasn’t coaching them hard before (I’m confident he was) and also that the team will play better because Dabo is mad. He’s been mad at the defense earlier in the year, did that help?

You’re not thrilled. You’re miserable and it’s obvious to everyone. Where do Streeter and Goodwin rank in compensation? How much experience did they have? You complain about it because it is disproving your every assertion. He’s winning right now without taking advantage of that financial support and trusting his ability to develop within. They’re 8-0 as coordinators and now in charge of the longest active win streak. You can never walk back the vitriol you’ve expressed toward them. You’re praying they lose for your own validation. It’s killing you and it’s hilarious.

Dabo has done more for the basketball program than Brad has. With all the extra attention and revenues that Dabo has produced running the football program, our AD is as well funded and has as bright a future as ever. Best is the Standard is infectious. The Best doesn't always happen in every area, but it's always the end goal and driving force. Dabo's success has also made Brad's buyout easier to stomach financially should that need arise.
Go Tigers!

Agree Dabo being mad is not an issue. I won't get into a comparison between Dabo and Brad as a recruiter and a motivator of players. When Dabo took over as head coach, Clemson hadn't won an ACC title since 1991 until we finally won one in 2011.
Dabo is a super salesman and built what we have now. Brad is a good guy but he is not a good recruiter. I would liken him to Ken Hatfield who took players recruited by Ford and won the ACC in 1991. He couldn't recruit and had a very bland coaching philosophy.
I'll be sitting in the seats in Littlejohn again this year, pulling very hard for Brad and the team. Hopefully we have a good season and grab one or two players that are decent from the HS ranks or in the portal. One or two make a huge difference in basketball.

And we are 7-0 and 4-0 on the road. Without weekly adjustments we are probably 5-2 or 4-3 right now. Just wondering what our record would be with bringing in an outside coordinator like some of you want. Can’t be any better than where we are now and I think we don’t handle adversity as well as have if we dod. DJ’s transformation shows that for me. Did we call off the dogs too early last night? Maybe, but I don’t think that was the coordinators making that call. Enjoy being 7-0. This team is doing great. Basketball season is coming soon, then we will really have a reason to complain ?

I agree Brand. Good thing is that problems with the Defense are much easier to correct I believe than offensive issues especially knowing the talent level of our defense. It'll be something to see if this defense comes out and plays 4 qtrs. I'm also suspect of all the focus on the middle 8 mins there seems to be because that is precisely when the defense eased off last night.

PBT - Agree with most of that. DJ had his

worst game of the season, which is really a complement with high completion percentage and no pics. He stared at receivers, missed a few reads and open receivers, took too much time occassionally, and runs were not smooth at times. This may be by game plan as he did not distribute the ball to TEs or X & Z much at all, perhaps to keep feeding Shipley. Anyway, he protected the ball, and was solid.
I thought our DL played well, but they tended to overpursue some and leave gaps. FSU success in the run game came when they had numbers by bringing in two TEs and an additional blocker. FSU did a good job of capitalizing on the over pursuit. I thought our DL was really good in pursuit.
Completely agree on the LBs, they tended to get washed out in run support OR they overpursued. They didn't find the ball on some inside runs.
Looking forward to Cuse. I don't think they'll be able to block like FSU did, but they will certainly try to exploit the seams in our zone D. If our O stays the course, and doesn't turn the ball over, the Tigers should wind fairly convincingly.

great plays. I forgot to mention that Myles played probably his best game. Maybe there was an over-pursuit situation but I did see the FSU OL just simply open holes in the middle too. I thought our DL depth would take the game late but the opposite happened.
Anyway, thanks for your comments.

Haven't rewatched the game yet, but last night it seemed that FSU's run game had a stall factor that let our defenders overrun positions, then took advantage of gaps that developed and bad tackling angles from there. A touch of Wake's offense.

The defensive issues can be fixed. LB play over pursed at times and got exposed. DL play was inconsistent. Murphy had a great game as well as Henry. Some great DT plays and some misses.
Offense was steady. DJ hit some great ones and missed seeing a couple that were there.
Will take the win. The finish takes some sweetness of the overall game away, but it will motivate us to improve

It wasn’t a receiver it was a quarterback carter didn’t make the play. Although he didn’t make the tackle he did what he was supposed to do. If you can’t make the tackle your job is never get beat to the outside. He forced him back inside where you supposed to have help. There wasn’t any help. Also FSU found a creative way to exploit our D because we play so fast we over pursue. Same reason we got beat on screen passes early in the year. We fixed that. All of FSU‘a run plays were runs to the outside. They were set up as runs to the outside. Our ends were firing outside, backers were firing outside. They were in correct position to stop it. The running back was stopping and cutting back up the middle. All the backers were vacated from the middle from over pursuing to the outside. Good scheme by FSU.

FSU had 206 yards rushing against us
Oct 16, 2022, 1:09 PM

132 against LSU and 112 against Wake for reference.
Also, not all the runs were around the ends. The Bresee mistackle, for example, was right off tackle for 15+ yards.
The DL played well at times but didn't play well against the rush last night.
