Stopping the clock for a first down

Oct 24, 2022, 2:36 PM

At 1:22 left in the first half, Clemson made a first down and the ref stopped the clock, spotted the ball and re-started the clock. The clock was stopped for only about 4 seconds. I thought that was pretty #### fast, but I checked a few other stoppages and it was pretty consistent. It seems like the refs are really racing to spot the ball.

With 29 seconds left in the game, Syracuse made a first down. The ref stopped the clock, spotted the ball and restarted it in about 4 seconds. With the clock down to 23 seconds, the ref runs in and stops play. I assume the replay booth called down. At first, the refs says to reset clock to 32 seconds, then 26. I assume that 26 seconds was when the booth called down and said to stop play.

Any ideas what happened? The net effect was to give Syracuse a 30 second time out.

That was the end result. I believe the Ref's and Booth's intention was to pinpoint the correct time of play left. Their intention doesn't always go smoothly. Just MHO, like yours.

Saw that too and have no idea why they stopped it in the first place. 32 seconds definitely would have been wrong and 26 was pretty close to where it was when they blew the whistle ( I thought it was 24 when I watched the game on TV last night). But you are right, it gave Syracuse a free time out but they did have to stay on the field. Maybe also helped our defense catch a breath because the next play was the interception. Worked out for the good guys in the end.
