Steve Fuller and #4

Jan 3, 2014, 9:46 AM

If you retire a jersey, its retired. Period. In my opinion. REgardless even if you are trying to get a star recruit. You are basically selling out to that kid that HE is more important than the PROGRAM. Just my thoughts.

His answer was very diplomatic but I agree with you and I'm sure that was the plan back then. Unfortunately now people weasel out of commitments

I guess it depends on if they retire the jersey or the #

I don't remember the details, but if they retired the number then it should stay retired. I'm not a big fan of retiring numbers because there just aren't enough numbers if we get a big run of great players.

Here he my 2 cents FWIW.........

If Steve Fuller or his estate at sometime in the future would like to see the number back in action then that is their call....

Also, I would consider a "generational retirement"...like 30-40 years or so to honor that player for a reasonable period.....

Retired "Forever" numbers have to be given to a very select few....like Heisman winners accomplishments on elite levels.

What Fuller did was special...I was around then and remember well...We were so bad for so long before Fuller came along that he could not help but be considered an icon...

Retire his jersey. Hang a replica of the jerseys Fuller, McFadden and Spiller wore in a trophy case. Let the #s be used. Same honor.

Mich does a neat thing that way with a patch on the jersey w the former player name and year. kind of like that

not just anyone gets to wear Tom Harmon or Desmond Howards jersey. It is a very interesting linkage of the past and the present of the program

I am of the opinion that it shows incredible short-sightedness to retire numbers at the collegiate level. These players are only here for 4 years.

I do like the patch idea.

I also thought it was interesting listening to Fuller say he would basically give his blessing if it was the right kid. This to me goes along with the patch.... You can wear this number, but know that it represents greatness and you have to uphold the tradition of this number while its on your back!
