Stay In the ACC?

Aug 3, 2021, 5:09 PM

In thinking about the position Clemson is in, do you stay in the ACC and hope things work out? IMHO and it pains me to say this but they need to get out. Like most all of you I’ve thought who could the ACC bring in that would help “power up”” the conference. N.D. Isn’t going to join, why would they? Even if they did that doesn’t come close to leveling the field conference wise with the SEC. other than ND who else? WVA, ah NO! None of the other FLA schools would do anything to add power to the ACC. I can’t believe I’m saying this but IMO I would like to see the ACC merge with the BIG10. How would you like to potentially get a home and away with OSU, Michigan, Penn State among others? I would be ok with joining the SEC but not have the ACC and SEC merge, maybe CU and FSU to the SEC but no conference merge. The ACC is weak and CU needs to take care of CU first and foremost. Again just my humble opinion. FYI, I’m old school and was sitting on the hill back in the 70’s and hate all of this crap because it’s all about the $’s and I get that but I just see this never ending and it will be an arm’s race. What say you?

No way BIG merges with ACC. They would merge with Pac 12 their B$?&@***

I’m very much against joining the SEC. I’m all in for the ACC getting better. The SEC has its weak teams also. The tigers would feast on Ky,Mo,Ark,Miss, “them”! I’d rather play them than VPI or GT or Louisville or Syracuse. We just need FSU and UNC and Miami to get better. And they will. NCSU and UVA and Syracuse can become better teams. And they will. My guess is the SEC is concerned about this. With that said, I would really like a game with Florida to start next season

This realignment will not wait for them to get better. It’s too late.

You do realize that this much talked about realignment isn’t taking place overnight! Right?

I initially thought this topic was interesting but at this point I'm almost tired of it because it's just all speculation. On the surface, the thought of joining the SEC makes me nauseous but it would create quality football games. Your idea of joining the Big 10 makes less sense geographically but it also would create quality football games. As much as I would just prefer to stay in the ACC, Clemson needs to do what is best for Clemson both monetarily and competitively.

The Big 10 wouldn’t make less sense geographically; we already go to Boston, Syracuse, Louisville every other year, ND every so often as well.

Could rejoin with Maryland, another former rival as well.

Going out to Texas/Louisiana to play would be the same as going to Ohio.

Re: Stay In the ACC?

It would cost Clemson around 390 million to leave the ACC right now. We are stuck unless some fancy lawyer can fine a loop hole in the ACC's grant of rights contract Salford locked the league into.

Re: Stay In the ACC?

Aug 4, 2021, 5:51 AM

ESPN is the one that holds those contracts and they are involved in this. Anyone that thinks that is going to stop realignment doesn’t understand there are these things called lawyers. Contracts, especially complex contracts, were literally designed to be broken.

It would cost $390 to leave through 2036 but potentially miss out on $390 not to leave through 2036 and another $390 through the next 15 years. Yes we are under contract but when that contract is making less than half of the SEC/B1G deals is it worth it long term?

I guess i'd have to wait and see what the playoff changes

Aug 3, 2021, 5:25 PM

to.. if its a 12 team playoff and say they're not going to respect conference champions then i'd say you gotta start merging somebody. If they're still going to include conference champions and then the rest be at large selections then i'd say stay in the ACC.

IF you go to the SEC you're just going to be in a overloaded conference where a decent team like Texas or Texas AM has 5 losses on their schedule.

Whether they like it or not..they're not selecting a 5 loss texas over a 1 or 2 loss Clemson just because they play in an overloaded conference.

At least i wouldn't think they would. I think you stay in the ACC and schedule as heavy as you can out of conference.

Aug 3, 2021, 5:34 PM

I agree el Tigre. Get rid of the Taxidermy Techs and play a good D1 school every year. I know that’s easy to say and not easy for the AD to do but it is a necessity... I think.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you have 5 losses you are not that decent, even in the SEC***

BIG won’t happen (AAU)

SEC ACC merger……can’t see that happening.

Add ND and Penn State or ND and Tex A&M

Go to SEC with FSU

Wish all conferences would schedule anyone they wanted and blackball all SEC teams. Let them play each other, that’s what they want anyhow!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we can drop the labels now....

Aug 3, 2021, 5:42 PM

... those who say "I don't want to join the SEC" are living in the past. The SEC as we have known it is gone. You can call it whatever you want, but there will eventually be 2-4 "leagues" for the big boys of college football. And we have no way at this point of knowing which one is the best fit for Clemson. If it's the current "sec" then so be it. But it will happen. There will be 30-50 teams that compete for he biggest prize in a league that will be set apart from the other little guys. THAT is for certain.

I think at some point there will be some type of merger between Big 10- Pac12 (Fox) and SEC-ACC (ESPN). It may not include all teams. The cable companies are driving this.

don't really care where we end up... but one thing is for sure; all the great teams WILL end up playing in a few conferences (or whatever the end up calling it) and the schools with less money will have to form the minor leagues. I believe that is where we are heading.

Re: Stay In the ACC?

This makes the most sense of anything I've heard. ESecPN is pushing towards a playoff of some sort. Probably a 12 team bracket broken up into regions like March Madness. Conferences will be gone.

If FSU ,Miami and VaTech were good the ACC could survive but it would still be at a disadvantage with Wake, Duke, BC and Syracuse. Too many small private schools with very little interest in football. This is Swofford’s legacy.

Re: Stay In the ACC?

The ACC does need to get better in football but the sad part is many of the schools have a basketball mindset. That is not changing.

Re: Stay In the ACC?

A couple of points.

1. UNC will be a player in college football THIS SEASON. National media is sleeping on how good our defense will be this season with the influx of young talent Mack has recruited. Take it to the bank.

2. No need to over stress on the conference realignment. College football is changing at a rapid pace. Clearly the entertainment companies/ESPN are pushing consolidation of conferences and we're definitely headed to one or two mega conferences separate from the NCAA.

3. No matter how things shake out, schools like Clemson, UNC, FSU and Ga Tech are not going to be left out of a Big Boy football league(s). You do need to worry if you're a Wake, Duke, Syracuse or BC fan.
