When you say you are "patriotic," what do you mean?
Apr 26, 2013, 8:51 AM
|
|
Does patriotism mean "pride" for your country? If so, what is it about the country that you are proud of?
Or does it mean you are supportive of your country? Are there limits to this?
Is there a scenario in which you would no longer be patriotic about the US? What kind of circumstances might cause that?
I'm looking for your personal take, not necessarily for a "right answer".

I, Svejk, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter.
There are no limits to an oath. I support my President, whoever he may be.

Patrotism is love and support of one's nation, even in times when one may not be particularly proud of what's happening in it, or being done by it.

I used "pride" because that's the word Tiggity used. In my original post, I asked if patriotism was "pride" or if it was something else.
If patriotism is "love" for the country, what is it about it that one loves? Or is it just an intrinsic love?
If patriotism is "support," then then what is it that is supported?

I admit that I am increasingly having trouble with this idea
Apr 26, 2013, 10:41 AM
|
|
Of "patriotism". I increasingly find my country at odds with what I believe and stand for as a Christian. And not just the leaders. "I pledge allegiance to the flag..." What does that flag stand for? Supposedly liberty and justice for all, I guess. Does it really, though? Will there come a time when I will not want to pledge my allegiance to that flag?
I know this line of thinking is downright heresy to some, especially in the gun-totin', flag-wavin' Bible Belt.
I am proud of how this country was started. I am proud of the things this country has accomplished. I am proud of and grateful for those who sacrifice themselves for my good. But I am not proud of the current state of my country. I disagree with most all of its leaders and what they're implementing. I do not stand for what America's leaders stand for. And it's increasingly becoming the case that I don't stand for what a majority of Americans stand for.
I'm wondering, out loud, does this make me unpatriotic? If so, do I want to be patriotic?

direct evidence and numbers that liberal/progressive ideology either caused it or made it worse.
America is an ideal.
Freedom. Democracy. Capitalism.
Our Constitution calls from small limited and decentralized government.
America was built before the income tax and liberal ideology. Progressives use times of conflict and strife to con the masses to win elections so they can get into office and infest the system.
FDR used the depression and WWII for the first major expansion of government, LBJ used JFK's death and Vietnam for the second, Carter used the government created crises of the 70s, now Obama is using a media that has abandoned their fiduciary duty to America and a modern depression created by the liberal policies of the Clinton administration.
America is not the problem, it's people running America, people trying to change her, destroy her.

lack thereof, is the problem.
Governments can change.
The UK was going down the toilet in the late 70s, but Thatcher saved it. Since Blair, however, the UK is going down the tubes again.
Wanna see the future of America?
Look at the HUGE problems and social issues starting to do real harm in the UK and France, primarily do to progressives and their false belief in multiculturalism and kissing the #### of Muslims because they were scared to offend them.
What lunacy.
Do Christians or Jews live by their own laws, or the laws of America? Hell no!!!! We all live under the same rules because we are all Americans.
Yet progressives bend over backwards to please Muslims, who are the ones with the real war on women and gays, not Christians. Progressives are fine with allowing Sharia law in this country. What the hell makes Muslims so special? They don't even believe in our core values and beliefs. Yet if you say screw that they need to assimilate or leave you get labeled a racist. What nonsense. This isn't about racism, it's about right and wrong, the rule of law. Progressive bash the overwhelming majority of America's population and #### on their Christian beliefs, but riot in the streets to protect the Islamic rights of a relatively few Muslims. That's simply insane.
It's like these idiots wanting an entire elementary school full of girls to be scared and offended by a little boy thinking he's a girl getting to use the girl's restroom so the 1 little boy isn't offended. Yea, that's smart, upset a hundred little girls and their family's to keep from offending 1 little boy. That's insane.
America use to be about everyone is equal but no one gets special treatment. If 99 people think one way and 1 person thinks another way fine, but the 1 better not think they can force the other 99 to accept them or kiss their ####. Progressives are destroying this country by flip flopping our core beliefs and values out of "fairness" and "equality" when the reality is those concepts don't exist. Life is not fair, we are not all created equal. Nature is nature and NOTHING can change that.

for the most part fodder for conspiracy theorists.
The FED, however, is our biggest problem. Clinton pushed Greenspan to flood the market with cash at cheap rates when the minor recession was already over by the time he was elected in '92. That policy led to the tech bubble and stock market crash right before Bush took office. It also led directly to the housing bubble and financial crisis we are still trying to recover from. Obama is doing the same thing, but it's a student loan bubble and another stock market bubble and financial crisis in the making.
Bush's mistake was letting Greenspan then Bernake talk him into keep rates so low and pumping more liquidity into a market already drowning in cheap money. Bush's admin did, however, see the housing and mortgage/banking crisis coming years in advance and tried to do something about it, but were blocked by the Democrats, primarily Barney Frank and a new Senator named Obama.
Bush gets blamed for a crisis created by Clinton, the FED, and Dems in Congress.

America.
In a very short period of time, Democracy, our Constitution, and capitalism have brought more people out of poverty, freed more people around the world, educated more people, and contributed more to science and technology than all other political systems and countries combined in the history of man kind.
There has never been a beacon of good, of freedom, of humanity like America, and there never will be.
We have our problems, yes, because no system is perfect and people are not perfect, but no other country has even dreamed of doing what we have done.
The problem is NOT America, the problem is radical progressive ideology trying to fundamentally change what ain't broken.
The problem is not America, but certain Americans. People are the problem, not America's core values and beliefs.

either agree or disagree, but don't tell me what I think.
Sorry, but you seem to be a typical liberal moron that doesn't like America. Read what you're writing.
First, America is just dirt, same as any other country.
Why is America the greatest country ever?
Our founding fathers, our Constitution, our people.
People from all over the world come to America for the "American Dream".
The only difference in America now and 200 years ago is idiots taking over Washington that don't value our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, our Declaration of Independence.
America is not the issue, America is not letting me down, the moronic IQ of the average American today and the incompetent, morally bankrupt, liberals and neo-cons they keep electing are letting me down.
Guns don't kill, people do.
Christianity isn't flawed, Christians are.
etc. etc. etc.
