108 - Rob Bodine Registered 108 Tackles for Clemson

All-American DL do not tend to fall out of the sky. But when it happens, it is a credit first to the player – and second to the coaches who embrace the talent and develop it!

Fortunately for Clemson, Rob Bodine made his way to Clemson – and Danny Ford was smart enough to recognize the level of player who had landed in God’s Country!

Before Clemson

Rob Bodine was a RB who received very little recruiting attention. Being undersized and playing high school football in a small town in North Dakota didn’t help.

Bodine originally signed to play for North Dakota. But, he apparently was willing to bet on himself to make it on a bigger stage. According to ClemsonTigers.com;

“Rob Bodine Defensive Tackle 1989-91

Rob Bodine might not be considered a pure walk-on, because he started his career as a scholarship player at North Dakota. But after his freshman year, he transferred in and tried out for the team.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-game-program-feature-clemsons-greatest-walk-ons/#:~:text=Rob%20BodineDefensive%20Tackle%20%E2%80%A2%201989,scholarship%20player%20at%20North%20Dakota.

The Post and Courrier adds:

“One of the most underrated Clemson players at any position. Off-the-radar status starts in tiny Velva, N.D., where Bodine grew up in a farming family that moved briefly to Pickens but then back to North Dakota.”

https://www.postandcourier.com/sports/clemson/power-rangers-and-perry-brothers-clemsons-top-10-defensive-linemen/article_a2e5499e-a0e9-11ea-b314-d7675e8c189b.html

At Clemson:

Once he got to Clemson, it did not take long for Bodine to excel. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“It did not take long for Head Coach Danny Ford to realize an outstanding football player had fallen in his lap. Bodine started at middle guard in 1989, 1990, and 1991 and helped the Tigers amass a 29-6-1 record in those three years. As a senior in 1991, the Clemson Hall of Famer recorded 27 tackles for loss, still tied for the most by a Tiger defensive lineman in history, and was named a first-team All-American.”

https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-game-program-feature-clemsons-greatest-walk-ons/#:~:text=Rob%20BodineDefensive%20Tackle%20%E2%80%A2%201989,scholarship%20player%20at%20North%20Dakota

That 1991 season was definitely special for Rob Bodine as he established himself among the best in college football. ClemsonTigers.com provides the following insights on Bodine’s stellar 1991 season at Clemson:

“ROB BODINE
Middle Guard • 1991

First-team All-American in 1991 by the Football Writers and second-team by AP, Sporting News and College & Pro Football Weekly … honorable mention All-American by UPI and Football News … First-Team All-ACC in 1991 for the second straight year … led the nation in tackles for loss (27) as a senior, tying the school record … had 48 tackles for loss in his career … anchored the defensive line on the unit that led the nation in rushing defense in 1991”

https://clemsontigers.com/all-americans/

Sports Illustrated summed Rob Bodine’s Clemson career as follows:

“At just 6-foot-0, 240 pounds, Bodine had no D1 scholarship offers coming out of high school. Earned first-team All-American honors in 1991 after registering 108 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks. Finished his career with 246 tackles, 15 sacks and 48 tackles for loss.”

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/clemson-football-ten-best-defensive-linemen-all-time#:~:text=At%20just%206%2Dfoot%2D0,and%2048%20tackles%20for%20loss.

And, as summed by the Post and Courrier:

“Though Bodine was a walk-on who came to Clemson as a running back and played nose guard at 245 pounds, he was a two-time All-ACC first teamer, an All-American in 1991 and is tied for seventh among Tigers in tackles for loss (48 over three season).”

After Clemson;

It is unclear what Bodine did after Clemson. Perhaps it returned to Bodine Farms in North Dakota? Wondering if any TNetters know.

Of note: Rob Bodine, the undersized walk-on from ND, was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 2009.

Bodine was tough! Clemson got every ounce of effort out of him.

Hopefully, someone knows what happened to him after Clemson.

North Carolina Highway 108 is a 22.1 mile rural two-lane state highway that runs from the west end at US 176 in Tryon to the east end US 221/US 74 Bus in Rutherfordton, passing through Columbus and Mill Spring on the way. Nina Simone was from Tryon.

Somewhat mysterious Tryon, North Carolina in Polk County borders the state line just above Greenville County, South Carolina, and the town of Landrum in the northwest corner of Spartanburg County. It was named for William Tryon, a former governor of North Carolina who negotiated a treaty with the Cherokees after the French and Indian War. The area was originally Cherokee hunting grounds. The town was incorporated in 1885 during railroad expansion and today has about 1,600 people on 2 square miles on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town is a haven for outdoor pursuits, fine arts, and equestrian activities. A lot of notable people have taken refuge in Tryon at places like Oak Hall, formerly the Tryon Hotel (now condos), including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and George Gershwin.
