Nah, garage bands that don't make it typically just get shelved and the music labels write it off as a loss.
Stars though...oooof back in the day those contracts were baaaaaaad. Even nowadays young talent can be signed to some bad deals like a 360 deal that can garnish cash from personal ventures.
However, sometimes a record deal can work for both sides but generally it will always favor the labels to recoup costs and make profits.

The thing that will bring NIL under control is when the financial sources realize how unpredictable the development of a high school star is. They're going to waste tens of millions figuring it out but they will one day.

A few years back, HBO did a special on a company that did something like this for draftable baseball and football players. They were paying them $500K and getting 25% of their contractsIt was later detemined to be "predatory". Although it's a new day and new views now.
