Son says his brakes started grinding on his CR-V. Ok, no problem. Grab some pads for the front even though seems like it wasn’t long ago that we put new ones on. Maybe he just stomps hard on the breaks, whatever. Gather all the tools and get together, check out the front pads and they look near new. Do some investigation and his left rear brake is grinding when he hits the pedal so something ain’t right (those are fairly recent as well). At this point I’m hot, sweaty, and pi$$ed off, so eff it. We are going to take it to the man.

Check the pads

If it is a stuck caliper, you’ll usually see the inside or outside pad much more worn than the opposite side of the caliper.
When you take the caliper apart to pull the pads off, just pull the slide pins out of the caliper, hit them with a wire brush to clean them up, and then put a little caliper grease back on them before putting them back in that’s the only different step than a basic pad change/brake job.

Those CRV calipers are a tricky design

So it’s possible the pads were not seated right in the caliper.

but need more info. I have an average to above average understanding of brakes. I can do rotors/pads if it is remove and replace - no problem. If what you think is the problem is in fact it, I would think you want the caliper all the way extended out so that you can grease it properly so it works going forward. Any more info is appreciated. May give it one more shot tomorrow evening before taking it to the man.

No need to lube that. If there was a problem with it, it would be a seal leak and that wheel wouldn’t be braking at all.
I’m talking about the slides. There are two bolts that hold the caliper to the carrier, and they are accessed from the backside of the caliper. Most likely you are already loosening them to pull the caliper to remove the pads, but most people don’t take them out all the way because you don’t have to. They have little rubber accordion boots that they go through that you can see on the caliper. You need to pull those all the way out of the caliper (they are just held in by friction), clean them up, lube them lightly, and put them back in the caliper. There’s nothing to it.
Check this out. The two bolts he first removes to pull the caliper are the slides. That’s job 1. Then go to 11:25 and see how the other pad is frozen in the carrier? You need to clean up those surfaces too (other the pad would travel along) to make sure the brakes are moving freely.

Spray lubricants on brake discs and pads really help braking performance.

Another thing that causes the calipers to stick

is a tapered surface on the rotor, causing the pad to bind off-normal, where the surfaces of the pad and rotor are supposed to be parallel. You can only get away with replacing only the pads every time for so long before this type of wear occurs.
I hate turning rotors more than anything, because they're more likely to warp afterwards, but a light resurfacing works wonders as long as the rotor thickness is still OK.

Most rotors aren't supposed to be turned due to the metal composition.

I just automatically change rotors with pads now. I have no clue how they're so cheap, but decent rotors are sub-$100 all day.
