That was a staple during my time at Clemson back 1972-76.

We would have been shocked NOT to see it. Since, for the most part, we were not very good back then, we needed the extra live entertainment!

If they put the concrete “tiers” on the hill like they are planning to, it will make sledding virtually impossible.

Lol. When we had that "giant" snowstorm in South Carolina

in 1972, I had gone home for the weekend, but one of my classmates from high school had stayed in Clemson. He decided to go sledding down the hill into the Amphitheater. He forgot about the ~8 foot dropoff at the bottom that was hidden under all that snow. He has several permanent screws and plates in his broken ankle to remind him it was there.

Food trays were the best.

When there was snow on the hill next to Clemson House you could go all the way across 93 on a cafeteria tray.

Food trays were the best. Oh yeah! The drive between Johnstone F and the quad was a lot of fun in the snow, but slowing down at the bottom was a challenge.

up there. Lots of fun stuff going on up there. He said one game there was a light rain, and the hill was good, wet, and slippery. He was at the very top, and lost his footing, and at a rate of about 125MPH, he slid all the way to the bottom. When he stopped he was looking at a very polished pair of dress shoes. He looked up and said, that he saw a meaner looking Hiway patrolman than any, that had ever stopped him for speeding. All he could say, over and over again was please, please, don't lock me up. I'm not drunk, please don't lock me up. He said the guy kinda half smiled and told him; if you can get up there as fast as you did coming down, I won't lock you up. He said; that he didn't know how long it took him to get back up there, because he was still slipping and sliding trying to get up. When he finally made it to the top, he looked down and the patrolman and one of his buddies were laughing their heads off. They didn't lock him up, so he must have been pretty good entertainment, for them. I've always wanted to see a game from the Hill. Never have, and now I guess I never will.

In the 50s, my dad, a former player for Josh Cody, drove all six of us kids and my mom from Chester to Clemson in our 48 Chevy for every home game. As the youngest I rode the whole way on the back seat “shelf”. Once there I took off for parts unknown within the stadium, most times winding up on the hill with a hundred other other kids laughing, scrapping, chasing and when I could grab a piece of cardboard, sliding down that venerable old slope. Those truly were the days. Does my old heart good to see that tradition isn’t quite dead. Yet.
