someone explain to me why spiking the ball to stop the clock

Oct 9, 2017, 1:30 PM

is not considered intentional grounding.

1. the ball does not make it back to the line of scrimmage
2. the qb is not outside the tackles
3. there is no intended target except the butt of the center

If you agree with me, can we send this to Dabo so he can argue this in a close game?

a loophole in the rules.

Googled it.

Section 2 Intentional Grounding

Item 3: Stopping Clock A player under center is permitted to stop the game clock legally to save time if, immediately upon receiving the snap, he begins a continuous throwing motion and throws the ball directly into the ground.
So you may spike the ball to stop the clock if you do so immediately after receiving the ball. However:

Item 4: Delayed Spike A passer, after delaying his passing action for strategic purposes, is prohibited from throwing the ball to the ground in front of him, even though he is under no pressure from defensive rusher(s).
Thus waiting to do so is considered intentional grounding.

Can't be grounding if the QB is not under any pressure.

It's all about sex and money.

In the old days a wide receiver took a step over the line of scrimmage and the QB airmailed the ball over his head. Thus, a receiver in the area, no intential grounding. But to save those few precious seconds of broadcast time, a QB can now throw the ball into the turf. Theory: it takes fewer seconds for the official to get the ball set and in the grand scheme of an entire season, we may get eight more Cialis commercials on TV during football games. So, you see it all comes down to sex and money. Doesn't everything.

Correct. Speaking of pills the usuck fan at the Arkansas game must have forgotten to take his little blue pill considering how hard she had to look for it.
