Some background info over last few weeks

The last three or so weeks have been a whirlwind for everybody - the off week, followed by road losses at Miami and NC State, the Tyler call, the win over Notre Dame........whew.
I hope we can put Tyler to rest after today. He was not the reason Clemson won and his call wasn’t the impetus for Dabo to suddenly change things. Tyler just got in the way of a very angry Dabo. I stood in the hallway outside of the locker room in Miami and I can tell you there was a lot of yelling going on. Not the usual quiet after a loss. I couldn’t tell who was doing all the yelling but it sounded like it was coming from the coaches’ area.
The ride home from Raleigh was apparently also noteworthy, and I’ll leave it at that. And then the Sunday staff meeting, followed by a lengthy injury report, put everyone in the building even more on edge. And there were a lot of changes last week, and we heard that practices were rough and loud.
I’ve been told that Swinney told everyone – staff, players, coaches, everyone in the program – you have 25 days to prove to me why you should be here next season. And no one was safe from his wrath. Like I said, Tyler merely got in the way.
The challenge now, of course, is keeping that hunger and keeping that drive. Interviews the past few days were very telling – this isn’t a fractured team. This group is close-knit, and I believe that if there are any players that simply don’t belong, they won’t be here next season. Dabo tried to tell us a week ago in his press conference – it’s pruning time. And he didn’t mean the fans.
Just my view from the sort of inside.

Glad to see Dabo light a little fire under some people's ### and hopefully they will stay hungry the rest of the season . If not, I do believe Dabo will do what needs to be done in regards to pruning

It would have been nice to maybe have heard some of this prior to the Tyler call, heck, Tyler probably wouldn’t have felt the need to even call if so. Thank you either way for sharing because whether true or exaggerated it does make me feel much better to know Dabo is cracking the whip on slack!

I don’t believe I OVER-reacted I simply reacted. I may not be done reacting this year either. One win against a #15 team we should have beat does not equal program fixed, even if some of you insist it does.

edit: One data point is too small. It is well known that playing in Death Valley is a 1-2 score advantage. The game was great. it was my favorite game in many years. But the fight is not over. In the following weeks, it will show whether it was luck or not. Those that are starters in the end of the season, are the BYOG players and coaches that the phase 2 dynasty will be built upon.
Those that will survive are those that didn't need the threat of no playing time or no job to be motivated.

Maybe because you are awful at communicating your point. It sounds like "Clemson got lucky to beat Notre Dame". That is TD-worthy.

give me 9 games. where the 1st 8 went 50/50 W/L whats the next games outcome? Heads or Tails? "Luck"? or a new trend we will find out in the coming weeks.
it could have been luck. it could have been the new era. argument is stacked in my favor. and the TDs are the ones that didn't get that in the split second of reading the post

That’s simply untrue. Our total defense was 18th in 2020 and 24th in 2015. We were #2 in 2021 and gave UGA their toughest game of the year. Last year was a step back at 22nd but still better than 2015 and we were in the hunt for a CFP berth until the last game of the regular season. We’re 6th this season - so our defense has been within the range it was to make the playoffs and two of the last three years as good as our National Championships winning defenses.

Back out the points scored by the opposing defense, and the points scored immediately following a turnover. Our defense is only giving up 16 points a game. They've been outstanding.

As others have pointed out your using scoring defense not total defense. For a variety of reasons I believe that total defense is a better measure. But, the last two years are still inside the boundary of teams that made the CFP and 2021 as good as any. This year isn’t over. And I think you know that this year is misleading.

So you knowingly want to punish the 2021-23 defense and their coordinator for the historically high number of points given up by our offense? Because it’s under 20 if you back them out. Even if you just back the last 3 years out to the average of the CFP seasons. So, do you want to actually have an honest discussion about the quality of the defense? Because it doesn’t seem like it.

Ok that’s fine. You’re entitled to your opinion. Let me ask you this…. How many defenses in CFB could overcome the complete dumpster fire that our offense has been this year and be a top 10 defense? I mean do you realize how freaking good the Clemson defense is?
Imagine our terrible offense combined with the Coot or TarHole defense? That is probably a winless team. Our offense has been devastatingly bad in almost every way imaginable.

You dismissed any added desire and determination for everyone on our football team who put in a good hard week of preparation for the game, including Coaches, player, coaching staff including those who spent many hours in the film room gathering data.
You completely dismissed the crowd at the Valley playing its part.
I want you to know, and you can check if you know how, I give out few TD and have given only one tiger fan a TD in my ~15 years on Tnet. Imo, your post should be RDed and removed so as not to infect and disrupt our fellowship and brotherhood.

Players too. I suspect borderline players will be encouraged to move along. That’s not happened in the past. If there’s others beyond Wiggins (who apparently knows he’s headed to the draft) that are low the accountability metric they may be surprised to not have their scholarship renewed.

I think this is a bit of a misconception for the Tiger program. I believe Dabo said it specifically about Decarri Collins most recently, he didn't like where he was on the depth chart. If that isn't coach speak for encouraging somebody to move on, I don't know what is.
It probably went something like this:
Collins: Coach in need more opportunities and playing time. Coach: You are 6th on the depth chart. The opportunities are there. Playing time is earned. Collins: Aight, Ima head out. Coach: Good luck. Need us to make any calls for you, let us know.
There's been a lot of guys that "work" their way out of Clemson. We've all seen the numbers on the outgoing transfers. That won't be any different at season's end.
While I don't think bringing in massive numbers in via the portal is the answer, some quality depth and potential impact players would help fill the void the exodus has left at WR and OL.

How we come out against GT may say a lot about where this team is mentally, emotionally, and physically. If we continue on with good play following a solid effort against ND, I will feel a lot better about us turning the corner and finishing strong the rest of the way.

Good to hear that coaches arent immune

To the wrath of CDS…many fans believe the perceived blind bias towards the staff is the root of the recent decline in the program. Players will respond to the knowledge and expectations of their coaches and I believe a turnaround will happen when the staff has an influx of external, experienced guys.

Yep. That and players that can actually run Coach Riley’s offense. We don’t have that. Or he actually stinks as a coach and has fooled everyone. And we know that’s not true.

Thank you for this David!!!! I have no idea why fans assume Dabo is just a ok with what’s been going on when he’s as competitive as it gets. He will get it right no way he’s going to let what he built just crumble.

First time caller.
Is it true that before the ND game, Dabo punched a hole in the whiteboard and yelled “Gator don’t play no bullcrap” before asking if any of the players were man enough to take a free swing at him?

The "pruning" statement last week was what was needed

to be said and get any complacency out of the program. Be driven, be hungry, strive for something better is always how a successful company or team is operated.
CDS needed to say it and he did not just say it, he let it be known it would be time for some to go a different way.
This offseason will be very very interesting around the football program. The remainder of this season will be graded very harshly by the head coach

Great info. Thanks for the update. Think Dabo has had enough of the sometimes football people instead of the 100% people. There will be a lot of new faces on the coaching staff and players alike.

This gives me hope. I truly hope Dabo has turned the corner. So his "pruning" comment was apparently Dabo's way of telling us that some of these unemployable-anywhere-but-Clemson coaching staff and marginal contributors to start earning their keep or they are on their way out. LOVE IT! And to be clear, NO ONE has been "pruned" yet but I certainly hope there will be some come the end of the season.

The buck stops with Dabo. I’ve never understood the post-game dancing in close wins vs. poor to average teams. It results in a celebration and acceptance of poor efforts.

About it. You are either part of the problems or part of the successes. Which group does everyone want to be a part of? Good for Dabo when the dust settles everyone will be evaluated.

The butt chewing was well deserved. This is been a very soft team up to this point and I’ve seen no motivation whatsoever. I hate that Dabo hast to use fear as a motivator, but he hast to do something.
