So here is my quick, current, relevant IPTAY story - and why

Aug 5, 2020, 10:22 AM

I have little sympathy now that the shoe appears to be changing feet.

I'll try to make this brief. ( I failed )

The ACC basketball tourney ticket application came out & I ordered 2 lower level tickets. There were 2 options - lower level & upper level. As a higher level donor, I thought I had a pretty good shot at the lower level books.

Got the charge on my credit card on 2/17 and immediately recognized it was for 2 upper level tickets. I called IPTAY and the ticket office and left messages and such. Never heard back from anyone. Called Kyle Shields - no response. Finally got in touch with Logan Welch - told him I ordered lower level & was pretty certain it didn't say that if our first choice wasn't available, we would be forced to take the other choice. I asked him to send me the form - it was online and I didn't print it out or create a PDF (stupid on my part) so I could check & if it did say that, I would shut up. Otherwise, I didn't want these tickets. He said he would check on and get back to me. He said worst case, he would get the tickets sent to me electronically so they were easier to deal with, return, etc. He never called me back.

At some point later, I get the 2 books of tickets in the mail. No electronic tickets. I start calling again, no responses. Left VM's, etc. 3 days before the tourney starts, Logan finally calls me back & says he can't find the form for ordering the tickets and he is working on getting a refund to me.

I told him I would try to sell them on secondary markets - trying to help out. But with physical books of tickets, made it much more difficult & costly.

I listed them for $100 a book - this was a total of $811 worth of tickets that I was trying to sell for $200.

Not a single offer.

On the opening day of the tournament, I call Logan - HE ANSWERS - and I tell him that nothing has happened and what was the plan ? He said he would continue to work on it. I told him that since I authorized Clemson to charge my card for the Purchase of A, but they instead sold me B, I would have no choice but to contest it with the credit card company & I thought it would be pretty cut & dry.

He thanked me for letting him know what I was thinking & he said he would be in touch. He never got back to me.

2 weeks later, I contested the charge with Capital One. They immediately took the charge off my card and said they would get in touch with Clemson.

2 weeks later there was a credit of the full $811 from Clemson and I got a letter from Cap One saying that Clemson said they would refund the money in full.

Not happy that it took all of that, but it got resolved.

OR SO I THOUGHT . . . .

Went to renew football tickets a couple of months ago and I was told that I couldn't because there was a balance on my account. I went online and there was no balance owed that I could see.

I sent an email to Owen Godfrey. He DID respond and said it had to do with basketball and that he would have someone call me.

They never did.

I called them - Clemson had put the basketball ticket charges back on my account and if I didn't pay it, I couldn't renew my football tickets.

Completely underhanded & deceitful and out & out lying to the credit card company.

This ISN'T Clemson Family - Best is the Standard - ethical customer service . . . . and it is for certain something I am quickly losing interest in being a part of.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

That is unfortunate. I'm a Clemson graduate and a long time donor of IPTAY. I've seen Clemson go from little old IPTAY to this big non-profit organization that receives monster donations every year. Of course I would be naive to think this isn't related to the success we have had in football.

In this last 5 years, I have increased my donation substantially, mostly because I am generous to Clemson but also to jockey for better parking at football games. My football tickets never improved that much, even though I was giving +$6,000 a year to IPTAY.

Now IPTAY, which has been sitting on a surplus of cash in recent years from all the contributions, is begging little old donors like me to continue support, which of course I will. However, it would be nice to feel a little love along the way from IPTAY. I don't think they do much for most donors and cater to the mega donors. Ironic now they are begging for cash from everyone, not just the big donors.

Very well said. I have known IPTAY since 1984 and it

has gone from an "All Hands on Deck" kinda thing to what seems to be a "Mega Donors are all that really matter" thought process.

I hate to say it, but I am not surprised. There is no rhyme nor reason for the way they do some of the things they do. When you promise to get back with someone it is inexcusable not to do so. Many of the big donors I know have an ongoing love-hate relationship with IPTAY .... mostly involved promises made to them for big donations and then a few years later going back on those promises. The best thing to do when you are promised something by IPTAY is to demand that they send you a letter confirming it or else they will deny it. I'll probably continue my membership and tickets although this long break from football (depending on what they do about fans) may make me reconsider.

Yep - have first hand knowledge of that as well. In order to

get X, you have to give a BIG capital campaign gift.

You are told that once you commit, you'll get X and they are yours - not including the cost of the season tickets each year, etc.

5 years later they come back and say - well - we know we didn't say this before, but we've decided you have to make that same BIG gift again in order to keep X (plus continue to pay the ever-escalating yearly cost of item(s) X. If you don't agree to pay another BIG capital campaign gift to keep X, we will have to go to the next person on the list who is MORE than willing to pay that same capital campaign gift and MORE to get your X.

This kinda what you are talking about ?

Yep .... in one case it involved a lifetime IPTAY membership, done a number of years ago. My buddy was promised four spots of prime parking in lot (#3 I think ..... closest lot on the high side of the west end zone). Several years later they wanted two of those spots and I think he gave them up for some other concessions. He had them write everything down. A few years later they wanted to talk to him about something and asked him to come by their office. Several of them went into a meeting room and they told him they needed one of his remaining parking spaces and some other of the concessions they had made to him. When they told him they never agreed to what he was saying he pulled out a letter from Bert Henderson (RIP) who was in the meeting. Bert looked at the letter and said ..... "meeting over". That is why I said "get it in writing". Bert was a good guy and I am sure simply forgot the promises he had made, but that happens so getting it on paper is important.

I know Bert Henderson (knew) - he got it and

understood.

These newer guys - I don't think so.

And I'm not some old dude railing about BACK IN MY DAY . . . . . it's the same guy looking you right in the eye saying - Yeah, I know we said that 3 years ago, but we have people that want to pay for what you have, even though you already bought it from us.

Thanks for sharing. Not surprised. I’ve had similar experiences.

Bunch of amateurs working there, and they think they’re slick.

There’s one girl who works (or worked) in the ticket office. I can’t think of her name...not sure if she is still there. Full-time employee, though. Anyway...she used to go on Twitter and try to be clever talking about how stupid the fans are.
Not a good look.

IPTAY would do well to remember a truism from industry.

Aug 5, 2020, 7:13 PM

That is:

Be nice to the people you pass on your way up the ladder, because you will pass those same people again on your way down.

I understand that Clemson tickets, or more specifically Clemson football tickets, have become a much more valuable commodity over the years. And, if an honest assessment and explanation of that reality was always forthcoming, there would not be the rancor that currently abounds.

The simple fact is, tickets are going to be allocated based mostly on TOTAL money donated. I have seen messages ad nauseum on here grumbling about "I donated for twenty years straight, and they moved me, or took away my seats altogether." Well, if you only donated $100 bucks a year for twenty years, and somebody comes along and donates $5000 bucks in one year, even allowing for inflation, who has really helped the Clemson bottom line more? (Speaking strictly in terms of giving, not accounting for local economic effect, yada yada.) That is reality. That is also what IPTAY does not publicize. Perhaps if they did, there would not be the complaints by those displaced. (But there would be a HUGE hue and cry from those who would be embarassed by public disclosure of how paltry that actual level of annual giving was!) Full disclosure, I have not been an IPTAY member for awhile now, since my children didn't seem to be interested in going to the games, and I live almost 4 hours away. So, I can't vouch for what they do now. But, I have to believe that if a list was published, EVERY YEAR, with where you as an individual donor rank in terms of total giving, it would be enlightening.

It sounds like you definitely had an experience with IPTAY that Clemson should be embarrassed to be associated with. I can only hope for your sake that it gets resolved in your favor. If facts are exactly as you have stated, then "right" is on your side.
