I try to save a life a day, usually it is my own.

I just got back from a trip to Normandy especially Omaha Beach. It’s Unbelievable what our soldiers did there. The Germans had well positioned gun emplacements that rained hell on them. I don’t know how any survived that day.

Things I learned while there:
Utah beach was along way from Omaha
There were a number of native Americans in the first couple of waves
The rangers at Point de Hoc had the wrong landing site originally. This lead to the most casualties while travelling to the right landing site.
American cemetery is located on a cliff overlooking the beach
There was a large rock on Omaha beach that soldiers hid behind for cover
The distance from landing craft to first German defense line was hundreds of yards
The beach reminded me of the Oregon coast with the cliffs there
The Normandy countryside is beautiful

I was there last year in May. Just an amazing experience that I will never forget. A great book on the subject and highly recommended is The Bedford Boys by Alex Kershaw. God bless all of those brave men.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Remembering is so important. We would not have the freedoms we enjoy today without their sacrifice and bravery.

If you have the opportunity - GO. It's well worth the experience. And if you go, take the guided tour. The guides do an excellent job of explaining the history of the event as well as all of the symbolism of the memorial. The entire place is a memorial and literally everything has symbolism. If you just walk around on your own, you'll miss a lot of it. There's also a Higgins boat there that was used at Normandy, as well as some other artifacts. My wife and I went on a very cold winter day last year and there was hardly anyone there, so that was nice, but they didn't have the "pool" filled and so we missed a little of that. Definitely worth the side trip and the price of admission.
