who has a better chance at winning, SMU or Clemson? I was at ACC champ game and saw Penn State vs Ohio State, M vs Oregon in person, and watched PSU & Oregon game. So I think I have a good idea w SMU chances(slim) but I really have minimal knowledge of Texas and how they matchup vs Clemson. What is the biggest weakness w Texas? Seems like Clemson might have to play a perfect game to win.

But if we were playing Penn State and they were playing Texas the answer would be Clemson.

SMU and it’s not even close… as far as I’m concerned, they aren’t playing Penn State. They are playing James Franklin and we know what time that is.
I actually think our boys will come ready to play Saturday just like they did against South Carolina and I think the coaches will hold them back and cost us another big game. Whether it’s play calling or messing up personnel or clock management. You can bet your house the coaches will screw everything up.

I'm curious about the Penn State/Franklin big game thing

Penn State has been incredibly consistent at beating less talented teams under Franklin. If they are favored in a game, they are almost always going to win.
On the flip side of that, they've also been incredibly consistent at losing to more talented teams. They virtually never beat top 10 teams with talent like Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, etc.
I'm not sure which category SMU falls into though. They definitely have a handful of very talented players, but they aren't loaded up and down the roster like Ohio State. They also aren't loaded on the lines of scrimmage. I think this is a team that Penn State can just line up against and beat in the trenches. Where Penn State typically gets in trouble is when they can't run the football effectively and they have to rely on their passing game. They basically have no threats at WR - TE's and RBs account for nearly 54% of their receiving yardage this year. Good defenses with physical DLs are pretty consistently able to shut down PSU's offense. I don't think SMU will be able to do that though.

Excellent post. yeah to be honest I just like the trash James Franklin for some reason, but you are correct. He struggles to beat the elite elite teams, but he does beat good teams and I would call SMU a good team.

I think I’m classifying this more as Penn state playing in a “big game” than Penn State playing an “elite team”
That’s why I still have concerns but SMU isn’t that good. I mean we did just beat them

As I've mentioned elsewhere in here, my gf is a Texan and huge UT fan, which sort of makes me a somewhat UT fan. I've watched every single Texas game for two years and attended one (the UT/Vandy game - pic attached) this year, where we sat directly behind the Texas bench.
Regardless of the SEC, "It'S TeXAs!!" and all that, I think we match up really well with them.
Their defense is stout, but their offense is quite anemic and lives and dies with Quinn Ewers. If he plays well, they play well, if he's having a bad game, they all have a bad game. He reminds me A LOT of DJ - and not in a good way. He may be a good kid, highly recruited and all that, but he's a head case. If we can rattle him early, we stand a good chance. He's not a great downfield passer and almost refuses to run, so expect a lot of screens and short yardage plays.
Defensively, like I said, they are tough. The run game is going to be hard to get going, we need Cade to be on his A game and really sling it downfield. If he gets out of the pocket, he needs to scramble and use his legs. I wouldn't expect Mafah to be much of a factor, even if he was 100%, they really clog the line and if we go with the ground game, expect a lot of bruises for a yard or two.
Overall though, I think we have a good chance. I'd realistically say this one ends somewhere around 20-17. Who has 20 and who has 17, I couldn't tell you..

I forgot to mention, if they start Arch, I think we may be in trouble. That kid has it - he's like when Dabo would bring in DW after watching Cole Stoudt go 3-out.. He's fast, has a good arm and has a calm presence. He's the real deal and is going to be something to contend with next year (and the year after).
Why they haven't started him over QE, I don't really know.. I think Dabo and Sark are a lot alike in some ways (blind loyalty). I'm not sure we'll see Arch start this game, but if Ewers starts making mistakes early, expect to see him come in the second half.

I believe SMU has a better chance of winning on Saturday. Having said that, I'd love to see the Tigers pull the big upset...

It's gonna be 25 degrees at PSU and there will be over 100K at the game. Not sure how well SMU will hold up as I'm not sure they have played under those conditions.

Their defense (defensive line) is better than ours and they have the ability to turn opposing offenses into one dimensional passing attacks
If they can avoid the turnovers, they are built pretty well
All that being said, I don’t think either team has a realistic chance of making it into the Championship game
