Since we want to ask hard questions

14

Oct 31, 2023, 10:02 AM

Here’s one:

If not Dabo, who, that is realistically available, would you rather have as coach?

Those of us who still think Dabo is the best man for this job have been called cultists, in denial, head in the sand (or in another orifice), yata, yata, yata for a while now, even though we acknowledge the issues and know that things aren’t the same as a few years ago. Those who spew this cult nonsense say they are “realists”. Well “realists”, here is your chance. Realistically, who would you hire right now or over the next offseason to replace Dabo? Have at it.

I can’t argue with that. Also wouldn’t argue with keeping Riley for one more year and letting him determine who to keep or replace on his offensive staff.

We want to see Dabo make the required changes to keep us relevant. So far he hasn't, or at least to the scale that's required.

And if he's unwilling to change. Then he can leave.

There have been many others that say they are done with him, attack his character, but qualify it with “if he doesn’t change this or that” he needs to go. One guy who I used to enjoy having discussions with said this morning that “He has become an arrogant self-absorbed a-hole.” Are you going to say that’s not an attack on his character? Find me one poster who says he should retire or be fired right now. I think I'm one of our most negative Dabo posters, and I've been pretty clear he gets a couple years to right the ship, provided he shows he's willing to make hard decisions and stop putting his friends and family into positions over more qualified coaches.

And this is EXACTLY what Dabo’s problem is. He has surrounded himself by the “yes men” from the staff to the school officials down even to local media that covers the team.

I didn’t actually hear it but sounds like Tyler said what nobody around Dabo will and it drew that kind of reaction from an 11 million dollar a year coach. I thought he didn’t care what people that he wouldn’t take advice from thoight? It sure sounds like he cares what they think.

The reason Dabo reacted that way is bc the dude was right it sounds like. Dabo would have NEVER EVER reacted this way 5 years ago or even 10 years ago. He now thinks he’s God and shouldn’t be questioned at all ever. He continues to point to PAST accomplishments and I surely never hear Saban or Kirby or Day do things like that.

This proves that Dabo is no longer the answer and for those that keep supporting the way this program is being run… enjoy fighting to even make a bowl game for the foreseeable future.

The way this program is ran right now… we will never sniff another national title/playoff appearance/ or an ACC title.

That was me on the Dabo should be gone response.

You want candidates?

Lance Leipold HC Kansas
Kalen DeBoer HC Washington
Jeff Lebby OC Oklahoma
Luke Fickell HC Wisconsin
Eliah Drinkwitz HC Missouri

We’re Clemson and people actually think it would be near impossible to go get a top notch guy. We’ve proven if you can we will pay. It’s proven you can win national titles at Clemson.

Do people really think we can’t go pry a sitting HC from somewhere else? Dabo is making 11 mill/year. Throw 7-8 at somebody and I guarantee we could get just about anybody.

We will never again truly compete for national titles with Dabo at the helm bc he’s lost it and he doesn’t know how to get it back.

Now of course he’s going to be given a long long leash bc people here think he’s God. If Auburn can fire a national title winning coach 2 years after then we sure as heck can do the same with Dabo 5/6/7/8 years later.

This slide didn’t just start this year. People can point to 10 wins or 11 wins and I’d say yep and we out talented the opponents bc we’re so much better than them. We didn’t win those games from coaching and a lot of those wins could have easily gone the other way.

Every year we refuse to get with the times is another year we fall further behind and in todays world where players can leave whenever they want… it won’t take long to hit rock bottom.

For being the only person at least so far, willing to admit that they have said they believe we can do better without Dabo and actually present realistic suggestions for someone else you would like to see try to do better. Although I disagree with the opinion that Dabo has lost it and can’t get it back, it’s good to see someone who actually has a plan instead of just whining and complaining. And I do believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, even those I don’t agree with.

Re: Congratulations TigerRag4416

Oct 31, 2023, 6:22 PM

Rhetttfla… major respect to you bro for not going the childish route of coot calling and the like.

It shows you’re an actual adult that can recognize a difference of opinion but still be able to be cordial and respectful while disagreeing.

Theirs a ton of options out there and quite frankly it’s obviously above my pay grade but I love college football. I watch everybody I possibly can when I have time so I promise you all that we would have mega options if/when the day comes.

I’ve lost just about all respect for Dabo. Last night was just the cherry on top for me bc I started to feel this way over 2 years ago once I saw this coming bc you could see it coming from a mile away if you really know the college football world.

I HATE the portal. I remember when we found out how it was going to be going forward and I DESPISED the idea of what it was going to be and what it was going to become.

BUT… once I saw Saban/Kirby/Day start truly using it and watching it work… I knew we were in trouble for the long term bc Dabo has doubled down time and again of being against it. We have more problems than the lack of portal usage for sure but it’s a bigger problem than many want to admit.

If we keep losing 8-10 guys a year to the oortal and we only replace them with freshman… we’re going to constantly be a young team. Which means in those tight game situations… teams like Duke/WF that don’t recruit nearly as well as we do but they have JRs/SRs that have been their and done that in those late game situations are going to prevail over us more often than not. Much less if we got matched up against the big boys.

We start next year with Georgia. If Dabo continues to employ his buddies and refuses to actually and truly use the portal this off-season then we are going to get our heads smashed to open up next year and it’s going to be another downward spiral from there and it’s going to make people realize that we’re reliving Tommy Bowdens final days all over again.

So yes UNLESS Dabo is willing to get rid of almost the whole staff except Riley/Reed/Eason and actually go out and really use the portal and start playing this game the way it’s played today then yes I want him gone as soon as possible so we can take a swing with somebody else.

The line would be endless with coaches that would want a shot at being the head coach at Clemson and we would have no problem getting ahold of a proven guy. Regardless of what the worshippers here want to believe.

I respect your opinion. I also watch more college football than just about anyone I know. I also don’t like where that game is headed with the portal but I have no control over that. I am also not a coach and don’t think I know better than Dabo does what needs to be done. I have opinions about what I might do differently, but this too is not within my control. I hope we find our way back to the top. I just still believe our best shot is with Dabo. Have a good night sir.

Dabo has always come across as a little tone deaf.

I think people want him to stop talking and fix things.

I'm happy to assume he knows what to do and it may take awhile.

I'm also aware that he isn't obligated to tell the public what he is doing, but lying about being happy with where we are isn't a good look.

and this goes back to DJ. It isn't like it started this year.

Personally I miss coach V a lot. His presence on the sideline was something Clemson has not replaced, and likely will not. With that said, I would like to see the coaches really ‘get into’ these games. The only thing lacking on this team is leadership and I’m not sure you can recruit that or teach that. Dabo has put my university on the map in a short period of time. He has done what NO OTHER coach could have done in a few years. It’s tough but we can handle a mediocre season every ten or twelve years!!!

I still think the Tigers will beat the Irish saturday and I challenge the hundreds of you who have never been to the Valley to be there and celebrate this win.

GO TIGERS
Stay Dabo.

Oct 31, 2023, 10:43 AM [ in reply to Re: Since we want to ask hard questions ]

It’s a three year slide and that 10 win season was 10 wins but it sure felt like it could have been 5 as easy as it was 10. We have been the benefit of a really really bad ACC for a while. FSU was awful for a while and most of the other ACC teams have lost a lot of games to non power 5 teams so it’s not exactly like we were rolling through Bama, UGA, Fla, LSU each year. Just like what’s said above, it’s what we see with the coaching hires and the players taken as fall back that always seem to be kids connected to either his friends from Bama or former players here as well as refusing, simply refusing to take any transfer players. We are not asking for 10-20 a year but hey if we got 3 dudes that are older more experienced each year to help compete against all the now older teams in college football, that would be great. It’s a bunch of things adding together and then being 4-6 in your last 10 games including losing that game to the coots last year on yet another freak kind of fumble. Lot of fumbles and turnovers going back to that game.

My only major concern is the kicking game. How did we allow one of our major strengths become a major fault in one season? It was bad in game one and no better in game eight. Also, why are five star offensive linemen never interested in becoming Clemson Tigers. One have ONE three star in this neeest class. Why?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That is what Dabo is not getting are not willing to say.

Oct 31, 2023, 11:00 AM

Special teams have not ever really been a strength IMO. I don’t remember ever being consistently able to pin teams inside the 10 yard line on punts. For a while we didn’t have to rely on field goals to win games and even BT, as good as he was later, was very inconsistent early on. He always had a cannon for a leg but he missed his fair share, especially his first few seasons. It’s been a really long time since we had a punt or kick returner that scared anyone - except us fans that were scared they may not catch the punt. Ray-Ray used to scare me every time he went back there, but he might also be the last guy I remember taking a punt return to the house?

Re: That is what Dabo is not getting are not willing to say.

Oct 31, 2023, 11:12 AM [ in reply to Re: That is what Dabo is not getting are not willing to say. ]

Forresttiger, ask that another way and you have your answer. "Why would I want to come to Clemson if I am a 5-star OL who can go to Ohio State, Georgia or Bama." Obvious answer is, they would not. Our coaching and our schemes do not project to the next level as those other schools do, so we are never considered. Solution: Hire a big time OL coach, stand back and let him coach.

Re: Since we want to ask hard questions

Oct 31, 2023, 10:59 AM

Both can be true. Dabo can be the man for the job if he’s willing to make some major changes including some of his ideologies. The portal has to be used along with embracing where college football is headed.

If he’s not willing to do that and college football is just going to blow by him so to say then he’s not the man for the job. Only time will tell between these two.

If he chooses to do the later then I say move on so it’s really up to him. Find someone that is willing to embrace the current state of college football that is not going backwards.

Re: Since we want to ask hard questions

Oct 31, 2023, 11:09 AM

So who do you want as coach if he doesn’t do what you think he should do and you decide you want to move on? No one seems to be able to provide a viable alternative. Just lots of “I want him to do this and I want him to do that”. He hasn’t done them so far, so who do you want to bring in that will be better?

Oct 31, 2023, 1:51 PM

There's no one better than Dabo (at this time) to fix this program. He built it, he took it to the moon, he deserves a chance to troubleshoot/rebuild now that it's come crashing back down to earth.

I believe some (like me) might say it seems the "cultists" are down with the idea that Dabo's got a lifetime supply of goodwill and patience to work with.

I don't think he does. Nor should he. I don't think he thinks he does, either.

However, I also think it's patronizing to say only those willing to watch the entire program degrade and burn in before Dabo goes are "real fans."

I do think that little episodes like last night convey several things (other than the man desperately needs to do a refresher course in media/PR):

1. It's hotter than nine kinds of hell in his world right now.
2. He's frustrated by it.
3. He's frustrated that so many fans are so frustrated by it.
4. He's losing confidence.
5. He's losing others' confidence.

As for replacements ... I don't think someone whose feet will fit into Dabo's shoes exists. The program is, in many ways, his alter-ego.

Which means the question is who would WANT to replace Dabo right now or in the off-season? Things were so bad under Bowden, Dabo could step in because everyone was thinking *ALL-IN? Sure. Whatever. Anything's better than this*

Anyway, maybe Satterfield. He's done good things so far. He's young. He's from the region. Gets it.
Leipold over at KU is something else, too. But prolly not in the mood for another rebuild/reset gig.
I've always liked Norvell although I know he'd be a hard sell to the hardline FSU haters.

I do not want Dabo to leave, but I personally like Sark at Texas. He had issues and seems to be a different person now. His offensive mind with a great D coordinator would be fun to watch at Clemson. I do believe that he is the current leader to replace Saban at Bama.

I don’t want Dabo gone, but whoever comes in after him may not last long. It’s gonna be tough to fill his shoes. I hope I am wrong about the next coach, whenever that may be.

I have no idea who should follow Dabo, but if it were today: I don’t even know their names but I’ve watched Washington play and they looked pretty dang good. Huge running lanes, fast offense, alert and aggressive defense……. You know, how we used to look.

We’re stuck with Dabo and anyone who pretends we aren’t is a fool. We’ve spent so much money on sliding boards, oculosus, gigitrons, speakers to blast 70’s rock anthems and a coach that we don’t have any spare cash to go hunting for another. What myself and many others are asking in return is accountability, humility, winning at least a few more than 1/2 of the games we play and not getting “Old Testament” treatment if we ask why it isn’t happening. Does this make sense?
