Winthrop Says No To Football

Winthrop decided Friday against fielding a football team stating the cost was prohibited and the Title IX imbalance would require additional women's sports. Other interesting notes in the Herald article included the fact that Winthrop's student body is two-thirds female. Also mentioned was that when UNC-Charlotte added football they added a $320 per year athletic fee for all students.

It may be financially painful at first, but with the popularity of the sport, aren't they leaving big time $$$ on the table long-term by not adding football? Would it not be a cash cow at a smaller school like Winthrop?

Actually no . Most schools (including D1) lose money from football . It's the overwhelming reason why most smaller schools stray away from it .

Who are these smaller schools that football is a cash cow at? Lots of schools are losing money on football.

Its a good thing they didn't ....

They would have ended up sucking anyway ...
Would have been cool to get a nice stadium and a chance to see Clemson play down the street from where I grew up... But that's about it ..
Even with the surplus of talent from Rock Hill, the Winthrop Eagles would be a bust ... The only team with worse colors or recruiting power is Dirtpecker U...

Not sure if you know how it works but Clemson wouldn't have been playing away at Winthrop
