Shipley Take

This might not be a popular opinion but I think Shipley needs to learn patience both in running the ball as well as his temperament. I love that he has fire and passion for the game but I feel like he always hits the hole the play is designed for too fast and with his head down. If the hole is there at the jump he usually will get 6+ yards but if it's not, which happens more often than not, than he gets stuffed for +/- 1 yard. The former is good but he doesn't seem to get his head up quick enough and then struggles to juke the 2nd and 3rd level players for longer runs on a more consistent basis. The latter puts us behind schedule on downs. Also, I saw where he took the blame for the fumble on the exchange with Klubnik this past week and I wonder if this was also the case in the Duke game. These situations, in my opinion, could all be attributed to not being patient and getting caught up in the moment. Again, I love his fire and it can be a great thing when controlled and focused. But as stated above, this can cause problems on the field as well as friction on the sideline between other players and coaches. Just my $0.02.

in the OL. I rarely see Ship do that.
He he not patient enough, does he not see the cracks, or are there no cracks? Really hard to tell.

I have to agree with your take. I hate to say it because I love him and his fire. But Mafah in all stats, even blocking grades, is better than Shipley. Cannot understand why the snaps and rushes are reversed. Mafah flat out needs more pt. And I would love to see Mafah and Haynes in the 2 back set as Dhood suggested. Facts don't lie.
If Dabo is concerned about ship sailing If his snaps are cut, then I don't know what to say. If he keeps sitting mafah, mafah will go to uga and become a first round pick. He's that good.

I suspect that Shipley runs within the system designed by the coaches
If you noticed Saturday the system that Wake uses in run plays is very different than the Tigers. They have their ball carrier slow or sometimes stop until the blocking is made. Then the back makes adjustments to his movement. It worked for them.

I think Ship and Mafah are good but neither is great. Neither has the acceleration and top speed needed to consistently break long runs. I still give the slight nod to ship but he does seem to be regressing this year.

I love RB's with power/toughness, but #1 quality needed at this level is breakaway speed. Etienne had both; We are suffering because of this - never have huge TD runs since Etieene left. Every other big program has the HR threat.

seems like there is no more talk about the skill field vision. Back in the day before the spread it was a common comment about a RBs ability to see the field and set up his run off blockers.
With the advent of spreading defenses out there is always space and you don't seem to hear reference to that skill set anymore.
Shipley seems to have a fullback mentality coupled to a limited ability to see the field as he runs. Even when in the open he is really N/S type guy who would rather run over or jump over a defender in the open field than juke them.
Mafah will juke but he is such a big target to hit he does not often get separated from the defender in open field. So, we have two really really good RBs but neither are complete backs.
my two cents.

RB who appear to have a lot of wiggle, ability to see down field and get moving when they see open space..maybe better than Mafah or Ship..
but of course their limited play against tired defenders in clean up roles helps their stats.

Nothing a vibrant offensive line cannot take care of in the end. We simply are not getting efficient production from our offensive line and until we do Shipley and Mafah will only gather mediocore running stats!

It all starts when the ball is snapped. Almost every play called is for a TD. OL is vital for success.
